So the first thing you should know about me is my name. Keefe Sencen. Yeah, that Sencen. But I prefer not to talk about it. All my name does for me is send me to the most boring private school in the whole wide world. The only interesting thing in it is me. My hair almost makes up for it’s lack of awesomeness but even THAT isn’t enough for this places utter boredom.
I live in New York City. Big whoop. We have the Empire State Building and other places I’m sure are important. So what? It just means the sounds of traffic keep me awake in our penthouse apartment.
Have I mentioned I hate elevators?
Well I do.
Really the one thing I have going for me is Dex, my best friend. He’s awesome, he helps me with pranks at school, and it’s even more awesome because he doesn’t go to my school so he doesn’t have to worry about grounding! Of course my parents hate him, his parents run a small pharmacy so of course he’s beneath me. I don’t agree, his pharmacy has the BEST soda, and his siblings are awesome.
Then of course he’s Tam Song, he says he hates me but he really loves me, and he has an adorable sister.
So I really have a pretty normal life, except for the whole famous movie star parents thing. But really I do!
It’s when I met Sophie Foster that things changed.
I have a cousin named Fitz Vacker. He’s nice enough I guess. He really just thinks he’s all that and obviously all girls like him. (Not really.) But I tolerate him, his sister Biana is really nice and he lives right next to the ocean on Tybee Island in Georgia.
I haven’t seen either of them in years, so when my parents announced that they would be away most of the summer and I would spend the whole summer (June, July, and half of August .) with them I wasn’t complaining.
The flight there was pretty normal. I was in first class obviously, but I spent most of the time sleeping and watching movies on my phone.
And uh, if the lady sitting across from me tells you about an incidents involving some pins I wasn’t involved, ok?
When I got to the airport the entire family was waiting for me. Biana attacked me with a hug, so did Aunt Della. Uncle Alden just shook my hand and smiled warmly. “It’s so good to see you again.”
Fitz wasn’t there.
Biana smiled sympathetically. “He had a prior commitment.”
I grinned. “It’s ok, I’ll see him later.”
The first thing I did after unpacking was go to the beach. I LOVE the ocean, and this beach had a cool pier with ice cream and burgers. I got a small shake and traipsed to a bench.
Then I saw him.
He was sitting with a blonde girl, good ol Fitzy, always having someone on his arm.
I took off running down the pier to give him a proper cousinly greeting. “Fitzyyyyyyyy!”
They both looked up in shock as a tackled Fitz and planted a huge sloppy kiss on his cheek. “Hey cuz!” I nodded to the girl next to him, who blushed immediately, probably checking out my hair and abs, and offered my hand to shake.
I grinned. “Nice to meet you Foster.”
She frowned and opened her mouth to say something it I cut her off. “Are you lost? Doesn’t seem like a pretty girl like you would be hanging out with a loser like Fitz here.”
Fitz turned bright red.
Sophie scoffed. “Why would I be lost?”
“Because all girls are lost without me,” I stage whispered.
Sophie rolled her eyes, and I took in how pretty she was. She was wearing a simple red one piece, probably a life guard, and her blonde hair tumbled down her shoulders in a messy ponytail. Her brown eyes twinkled with sparks of gold, and her frown had a smile hiding behind it.
This summer was going to be interesting, I just knew it.
I am what one would call a serial sleeper inner. Yes, that’s a thing, and according to my parents it’s a crime. Thankfully Alden and Della don’t care.
I slogged out to the kitchen around noon, still in my guilty pleasure Batman pajamas. Or pajama pants. I hate sleeping with a shirt on. I yawned and noisily made myself some eggs, not hearing the door open.
Thirty seconds later, someone cleared their throat. I looked up to see the girl from yesterday, Sophie, standing there with her face bright red. She averted her eyes, mumbling something that sounded like, “Fitzyhere?”
“Huh? Oh yeah, he’s probably up in his room.” I looked at her curiously. “You’re Sophie, right?”
She nodded. “And you’re Keefe.”
I grinned. “Yes indeed, is there anything I can help you with? You know where Fitz- actually I have a question for you.” I gestured for her to come closer.
Sophie hesitantly took a step closer and I had to make myself not get lost in her eyes. “Are you and Fitz dating?” I whispered.
Sophie blinked rapidly, heat slowly rising in her cheeks. She reached up to tug out an eyelash and I frowned in confusion. I’ve never seen someone do that before.
“Woah Foster, no need to get all nervous. It’s just a question.” I watched her curiously as she stared at her feet. She had nice feet. Her nails were red.
She shook her head. “Well no. Not yet-I mean, not REALLY. But...maybe?” she self consciously scratched her arm. “It’s complicated.”
I nodded in understanding, feeling only a little bit jealous. I could find someone else for the summer. “Oh. I get that. Want me to escort you to his majesty?”
Sophie met my gaze, still red. “Well...maybe if you had a shirt on.” So THAT was why she was so flustered. She’s one of those types.
“Well I can fix that easily,” I offered.
Sophie shook her head. “Uh, no thanks. I know where it is,” she darted up the stairs.
I woke up the next morning by Biana leaping onto my bed. “Ackgrrumble BIANA!”
Biana just laughed in my face. “You’re going to come see me ride! Oh pleeeeeeease? You like horses! I’m lease please PLEASE!!”
I rolled over and groaned. “You aren’t asking. You’re demanding. What time is it anyway? The world hates me o clock?”
Biana scoffed. “It’s nine in the morning, how late were you up?”
“Midnight.” I lied.
Biana raised an eyebrow. “Liar. I caught you with the lights on at two, you just didn’t see me.” I closed my eyes. There was no escaping this one.
Biana squealed. “Yay! Thank you so much Keefe!”
“Yeah. Uh huh.” At least equestrian girls were pretty.
I drove up in Biana pink minivan. Yeah. Hopefully nobody saw me. I escaped as quickly as possible and followed Biana into the barn. She led me to a stall with a chocolatey brown horse with black to the knees, ears, and mane and tail. Biana greeted her with a kiss to the nose. “This is Lady Sassyfur, or Sassy for short. Don’t let her name fool you, she’s a sweetie. Want to help me get ready?”
I petted Sassy’s nose. “Actually do you think it would be ok if I took a walk around? It looks like there’s a pond over there...”
Biana nodded. “Oh of course! Just don’t go into any of the paddocks with horses, some of them will take any chance to escape.”
I laughed. “Then we’d get along great.” I started walking down a path, it was a beautiful area.
Then she caught my eye. It was the most beautiful horse I’d ever seen, a silvery white one with dark brown eyes. She was practically flying over the jumps, her rider but a passenger.
I watched as they went over several more, and when they were finished the rider grabbed a water bottle off of a fence post and took a drink of water.
After a while Sophie took the saddle out of my arms. "I'm going to go put this in the tack room. Don't do something stupid."
I scoffed. "I would never."
She raised an eyebrow. "Right. I'll be right back," she said, disappearing into a door a couple of stalls down.
I turned to look at Silveny. She was a really beautiful horse, especially her eyes. They were soft and attentive, watching my every move. They were almost intelligent, like I was looking into Sophie's eyes instead of her horse's. I reached out to stroke her cheek, and she leaned into my hand. I moved a bit and scratched at her neck just behind her ears. "You're such a good girl, aren't you? You're kind of sparkly...I should call you Glitterbutt." Silveny bobbed her head and I chuckled.
I heard Sophie squeak from behind me. "She's letting you pet her?" I turned around to face her, slightly confused.
"Obviously. She's really sweet."
Sophie frowned. "But...I'm the only person she lets touch her, except for my dad. She was abused and we were the one that found her, it was cold out and I found her so skinny you could see her ribs, she had no water, no blanket, and her pen-if you could call it that- looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months." Sophie carefully reached over and touched a dark smudge on Silveny's shoulder. "See this scar? My guess is that she got beaten. I was one of the people who helped rescue her, and she's only been cooperative with me for a couple of months."
I ground my teeth. "Some people are just monsters. Who would do that?"
Sophie shook her head sadly. "A monster. But I'm just surprised she let you touch her. You must be really good with animals."
I smiled. "They do like me. Especially frogs."
Sophie gave me a funny look but didn't comment. "Yeah well...it's good that she likes you. Want to give her a treat?" she asked, holding out a piece of apple. "Just hold it flat on your palm so she doesn't get your fingers."
I couldn't tell if she was joking so I just swallowed and held out the apple to Silveny. She swooped in and snatched it off of my hand, crunching loudly. Juice dribbled down her chin and I chuckled.
Sophie smiled. "Well I'm going to go turn her out, did you come with anyone?"
"Yeah, Biana took me."
A small shadow crossed Sophie's face. "Oh, that's cool. She's probably looking for you."
I nodded, a little confused my the change of her tone of voice. "Uh , sure. I'll see you later?"
"Yeah," Sophie said, grabbing a lead rope. "Later."
I nodded, moving away. "Thanks for letting me help."
She laughed a little. "Thanks for holding my saddle for thirty seconds."
"Hey that was hard work for me, I usually don't do anthing."
Sophie raised an eyebrow. "I see. I'll see you later," she said, taking Silveny the other way. "Bye."

About a week later I was watching tv. Sophie walked in. I prepared myself for an exuberant greeting, we had abviously bonded at the barn. Barn Bonding Buddies!
She walked past me.
I squawked in indignation. "Foster! I was right here, and you didn't say hello!"
She leapt into the air. "Keefe! I didn't even see you!"
I rolled my eyes. "Excuses. I thought we were friends, and you just walked right past me." I swiped away an invisble tear. "It's almost too much to take."
Sophie sighed deeply, annoyance rolling off of her. Her eyes didn't look too bothered though. "I'm sorry Keefe, I really didn't mean to break your heart, and I regret it every day. I love to be with you, and ache for your presence."
She didn't say that. Instead she said "Sorry Keefe. I guess you're just not that important."
I grumbled. "You'll be sorry you said that someday."
Sophie rolled her eyes. "Whatever you say. I guess you're one of those city boys with nothing better to do than bother girls, right?"
I placed a hand over my heart. "I'm hurt that you would accuse me of such a thing."
"Yeah, yeah. Is Fitz here?"
"It breaks my heart to say this but...no. Something about a football thing."
Sophie looked doubtful. "In summer?"
I shrugged. "I think it's more of him hanging out with his football friends."
Sophie looked small. "Oh."
I bit my lip, not liking the nervous look on her face. "You could hang out with me instead! I can't give you a makeover like Biana, but I could try."
Sophie laughed a little. "No thanks," she hesitated. "You got anyhting to eat?"
I beamed. "I know just the thing!" I ran into the kitchen and came back a couple of minutes later. "Look! They're E.L. Fudges. I've never tried them before, so we can try them together!"
Sophie laughed, snorting adorably. "Those are mine, I always keep them here since they're my favorite." She crossed the room and took them out of my hands, ripping the package open. "Here, try. They're good."
I gaped. "You expect me to eat an innocent elf?"
Sophie shoved one in her mouth. "They live to be devoured."
I hesitantly took a bite, smiling when it was actually pretty good. "They're not bad tasting."
Sophie shook her head and took another one. "Nope. In fact they're delicious," she said, smiling as she reached for yet another.
Her hand bumped mine. My eyes darted to hers. Her cheeks were red and she glanced away.
The door banged open and Fitz loped in. "Hey guys!' he siad, frowning when he saw our hands. "What's up?"
Sophie jerked her hand away. "Nothing, you ready?'
"For what?" I asked.
Sophie glanced at me. "Summer class, Introduction to Physchology. We both want to major and wanted to get ahead of the game."
I smiled. "That's cool! What-"
"We should really get going," Fitz cut in. "Come on Soph."
Sophie glanced at her watch and cringed. "Oh yeah, we're late. Bye Keefe."
TheCharmingBookworm wrote: Guys I’m really sorry, I’m a counselor at a day camp so I’m gone most days, and I’ve been kinda swamped since my other fanfics. I will post again later today though! I promise this time!
It's alright. Things happen. People are stupid. No reason to panic! All guys are dumb when they're showing off for girls. Not that I was showing off for Sophie obviously, I just happened to try and attempt a super awesome skateboard trick while she was there.
It um, well it's also why I'm in the hospital.
But don't worry! Injuries just come with being Sophie's friend, or so I've heard. Not that I'm complaining of course, about being Sophie's friend I mean. I could go without the broken arm. And the massive glaring I got from Fitz when Sophie panicked. Apparently he's never put himself in harms way for her sake.
Anyway I am currently in the hospital, and this annoyed looking doctor keeps checking on me. He calls himself Elwin, and even through his slightly annoyed appearance I think he secretly admires me. He takes my temperature, because a broken arm TOTALLY is cause for a fever.
I didn't have one. Obviously.
Suddenly Sophie walked in. Elwin looked up with an amused expression. "What happened this time?" Sophie turned red.
My interest was piqued. "Yeah Foster, what happened this time?"
She glared at me. "I'm regretting my decision to visit you now."
I wilted. "Forgive me?"
Sophie huffed. "Maybe. Eventually."
Elwin coughed back a laugh and I scowled at him. He busied himself with writing a note.
Then Fitz got there. Yippee! It was a real party now! He smiled at Sophie before frowning at me, which I thought was uncalled for. "What happened?"
"Keefe had an incident," Elwin butted in.
Fitz raised an eyebrow and I hurried to correct Elwin. "No! I made a mistake that even Mr. Perfect here could've made, don't worry!"
Sophie touched my arm gently, as if she was afraid I'd break to pieces with pressure. "You have to wear a sling."
I shrugged, pretending her touch didn't send ,y heart into the sky. "Eh, I'll be fine."
Sophie didn't look convinced so I took her hand. "Hey, I promise I'll be ok."
Fitz jolted when he saw our hands. "Hey Sophie want to go? Grady wanted you back early, remember?"
Sophie yanked her hand away. "Yeah. Bye Keefe."
Elwin looked at me sympathetically as they left. "Unrequited love sucks."
This is really good!! There were a couple things that I think was just from audio correct!! But otherwise great job!! Do not worry about the audio correct thing it happens to anyone who has great writing!!!
One day I just came back from the grocery store, carrying milk, eggs, and E.L Fudges. They all nearly fell to the floor whhen Sophie ran into me. "Woah! Steady there Foster." I gripped her arm, attempting to keep her from falling. MY smile fell when I saw that she was crying. "Oh no Sophie, what's wrong?"
Sophie sniffled and swiped at her nose. "N-Nothing. I'm fine. I'll see you later Keefe."
I frowned and shook my head. "You can't leave mw like that Foster. Look! I even have cookies!" I offered the packaged cookies.
Sophie let out a strained laugh and shook her head, fresh tears welling up. "I'm sorry Keefe. I have to go." She pushed past me, tugging her wrist out of my hands. "Goodbye."
But it was too late.
She was gone.
It had been two days since I'd seen Sophie. That was a long time for us, and even nore so for her and Fitz. Fitz has been in a really irritable mood as of late. THis morning he snapped at me for eating his favorite cereal that was coincidentally my favorite too. I think he and Sophie had a fight, but when I tried asking him about it he looked like he wanted to strangle me.
I've been avoiding him since.
"Here's your teddy bear." The carnival woker's nasally voice interrupted my daydream of Sophie being here with me and the bear being for her instead of me. Honestly I had no idea where I was going to keep the dang thing.
I lugged it out to the car that me and Biana had came here with. I had lost Biana a while ago, the last time I saw her she was making googly eyes at some guy with silver bangs. They were probably hiding in some closet now getting up and personal. Of course that meant I was alone until they decided to resurface, and I definitely wasn't going to look for them and risk walking in on any potentially scarring situations.
So I went back to the carnival and got in line for the ferris wheel. The blonde head in front of him looked very familiar. In fact it looked like Sophie. In fact it WAS Sophie! I tapped her on her shoulder, feeling a surge of relief when she turned around. She melted when she saw me. Or maybe that was her imagination. "Keefe!"
"Foster! What are you doing here?"
She gestured vaguely. "Just...riding."
"Want to come with me?"
She smiled. "Sure."
After we got on it was only semi awkward. It was just getting dark enough that you could see the lights starting to brighten the night. Like stars reflecting the sky. The silence was so fragile it would be easy to break.
Of course Sophie broke it. "Is Fitz here?"
I wordlessly shook my head.
She exhaled in relief.
I had to ask. "What happened?'
Sophie shrugged. "He just...he doesn't listen."
It was silent for a while. Then i carefully took her hand, shivering at the trail of warmth that shot up my arm. "I'm a good listener."
Sophei smiled at me. "I know."
And I knew too.
It was the beginning of something.
OMG! THIS IS SOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD YAY! :))) (PLS DON'T SAY YOU ENDED THE STORY THAT QUICKLY)
It turns out that it was indeed the start of something. Tears in the middle of the night, kisses good morning, red high heels and Sophie falling into my arms and he dad calling me That Boy and us both screaming "I KNEW IT!" when Biana introduced us to her new boyfriend, Tam Song and her teaching me how to ride and shaking her head in shock when Silveny was an angel for me.
It happened in such a way I didn't realize I was falling in love wtih a girl who lived hundreds of miles away from me.
Until it was time for me to go home.
"Foster please don't cry, we both know I'll never leave if you do."
She curled up on my lap, hiding her face in my chest. Her voice was muffled. "but you know I can't live without you."
I sighed. "Sophie look at me." I gently framed her face in my hand, her eyes were still falling to the floor. "Hey, you know I'm going to NEVER forget you, you are so amazing, and you changed my life."
Sophie sniffled, trying to keep the tears away like I'd asked. "But you will. People always say that, and in two years I'll be nothing but a memory of a worthless summer spent in Virginia."
I shook my head. "You're right in a degree, but Sophie it wasn't a useless summer. It was days full of laughter and tears and emotions that overwhelmed me in a way that they never had before. You will always mean everything to me, I swear it. And besides we're keeping in touch right?"
Sophie sighed. "I suppose so. I love you Keefe." Tears were sparkling in her eyes that made me almost cry myself. As her words sunk in I kissed her chastely on the lips.
"I love you too Foster, and I always will."
A lone tear fell down her perfect skin as the gently took my collar and placed a longer, deeper kiss on my mouth. When she pulled away she crawled off of me and tugged me to my feet. "They just called your flight."
I stood and smiled at her sadly. "I'll see you tomorrow, k?"
Sophie faltered. "What?"
"Skype." Then I was pushed along with the crowd and into my plane.
