Yep, they’re Cognates. Wow. Fancy. No offense, but this is a lame reason. Fitz and Sophie (mostly Sophie) were practically forced into being Cognates. Fitz was all “Cognates?! COOL! Let’s do it, Sophie, please, let’s do it!!” and Sophie was like “(*laughs nervously*) Ha-ha, yeah… I’m totally not dreading every single thing about that idea…” Sophie, of course, liked the idea of the extra brain-power she and Fitz got from being cognates, but she hated the idea that she would have to actually reveal every. Single. Secret. Of course, Fitz wanting it that badly made her want to do it. So really, if you think about it, Sophie was pressured (by Fitz) into the whole Cognate-dom. And then Fitz used it as the reason for why he should do everything with Sophie, even when it wasn’t practical, or smart.
Fitz found Sophie, you guys! Yeah, he did. On his dad’s orders. He wasn’t even that interested in it, and I’m willing to bet that like his older brother, Alvar, Fitz thought it was all a hoax. Of course, my own opinions aren’t facts or strong reasoning. But him going on Alden’s orders is a complete truth. It wasn’t Fitz’s idea.
Fitz gives Sophie tons of gifts: Um, ‘tons of’? Try around five or six. He baked for her a couple times, yeah. I’ll admit it, that takes time. I will give him points for that. But the whole “Here’s my traitor brother’s school award thing, want to smash it?” thing wasn’t even that sweet. It’s like, here’s this thing I’ve been wanting to get rid of, why don’t you do it? And then in Legacy? That painting? I can’t even. Fitz is like “Here’s this awesome painting. Yeah, it’s of that super sweet/romantic moment we had. Oh, and also, my best friend (AKA THE GUY WHO ALSO LOVES YOU) painted it. And also, I paid him to do it. But that doesn’t matter.” Except for Sophie, it did matter. Her mind “stuck on that part” of it. I mean, Keefe is pretty obvious about his feelings towards Sophie. I don’t think any of the KOTLC are as oblivious as Sophie, so I’m pretty sure Fitz has figured it out by now. So that just makes it all that more sick. I mean, what sort of “best friend” relays every single detail of a moment between himself and the girl his friend likes??? I don’t understand it.
But what about his eyes? Yeah, well, what about Dex’s dimples? I know Sophie doesn’t ever say anything about liking Dex’s dimples as much as she likes Fitz’s eyes but come on. Dimples are cute. But guess what? (SPOILER) Dexphie didn’t happen. And - this pains me to say it - Sokeefe hasn’t happened either, despite Sophie’s acknowledgment that Keefe’s hair is awesome. And have you ever heard the common phrase “Never judge a book by its cover?” Well, that most definitely applies to Fitz. Just because Sophie loves the color of his eyes, doesn’t mean she should automatically be with him, or automatically have a crush on him (which ended up happening, but seriously, by human standards, Sophie was twelve. She didn’t know anything about things like that, and no offense to Sophie, but she didn’t even have friends) which brings me to counter-reason number five:
Sophie’s attraction to Fitz is literally built on a twelve-year-old’s crush. And honestly, can you blame her? Fitz is super cute. He’s an elf, after all. But if the first elf Sophie had ever seen had been Dex or Keefe? She probably would’ve reacted the same way. In fact, she probably would have had a crush on one of them!! And if that was the way the series was, I probably would ship Fitzphie!! Or I might not even ship Sophie with anyone! I don’t think a relationship built on a love-at-first-sight thing (at least for one person) is a strong relationship. And yes, Sophie got to know Fitz, and he, of course, has personality traits that are attractive to Sophie too, but more than half of Fitzphie’s moments involve Sophie thinking about his “movie-star smile” or his “gorgeous teal eyes” In fact, some of Sophitz’s moments actually ARE Sophie making comments about Fitz’s appearance!
This isn’t even a counter-reason, but I have to say it anyway: Sophie and Fitz’s relationship was TOXIC. I’m going to have to go into a sub-category thing here for this:
Sometimes (mainly that time in early Legacy) Sophie is so scared of what Fitz will think of her, she can’t even talk to him. Boyfriends and girlfriends should be the person you can confide everything in (even if they aren’t cognates) But that wasn’t the case with Sophie and Fitz’s previous relationship.
Fitz gets automatically jealous of anything Sophie does with Keefe. This one isn’t as bad as the other ones. It makes more sense, I will say that. But can Fitz blame Keefe for being the awesome FRIEND he is? Fitz is always getting mad at Keefe, even when it’s not Keefe’s fault! Sophie chose to go over to the Shores of Solace to talk to Keefe about her problem. And Fitz doesn’t expect Sophie’s friend to try and make her feel better about it? What would he have done if his and Keefe’s places were switched? Told Sophie “That’s too bad, I guess you’ll be Unmatchable forever.”? Fitzphie shippers can’t deny that Fitz would have done the same thing for Sophie, had his role been switched with Keefe’s. But nope! Fitz got mad at both Sophie and Keefe, even though Keefe helping Sophie was technically for Fitz’s relationship.
In relation to the above reasoning: Fitz gets way too mad about the most irrelevant things! I know, I know, Sophitzers are probably getting tired of hearing this one, but you guys are going to have to get used to it because until SM does something about it, it’s not going to stop being true. Fitz needs to learn that he is the one thing in life he can control (Hamilton reference there! ?) He can’t control anybody else, and their (AKA Sophie’s) feelings are their own. Not his. So what if Sophie didn’t want to tell Fitz about her bio mom? That’s her business. And yep, people change their minds about things. So guess what? Sophie can too! Fitz needs to learn when to press on, and when to just drop it.
That’s all I can think of for now, but I just wanted to say my opinions. Again, please don’t take offense to any of this! ?
