  • So I'm new at this, and I've never been very interested in writing fanfics, but one day I got an idea and decided to try it. So I have written this SoKeefe fanfic-chapter-thing which may or may not be continued. I made four drafts and I hope somebody here finds it at least mildly entertaining!

Feedback is 100% welcome (if anyone ever reads this)!

There is a second thread here!!! https://lost-cities-keeper.fandom.com/wiki/Thread:793702#267

    • Keefe had finally woken up.

Sophie had spent all of her spare time in the healing center, sleeping there most nights. She would sit on Keefe’s cot and hold his hand, transmitting to him what was happening with the Neverseen, just hoping that he would wake up.

      Then one day, he did.

Sophie was sitting on his cot, holding his hand and transmitting over and over:

Keefe. Wake up. Please. We need you.

      He didn’t move.

Sophie gave up on repetition. When was he going to wake up? She missed him. Life wasn’t the same without Keefe there with his cute smirk, always ready to make a joke and cheer her up.

Had she just called him cute?

She sighed. She was going crazy without Keefe. She barely did anything anymore. She tried to help with the Neverseen issue, but she couldn’t focus without Keefe there. She had never realized how much he meant to her.

Keefe, please. I need you. She transmitted.

      His eyes fluttered open.

      “Foster?”

      “Keefe?”

He smiled and sat up. Sophie let go of his hand and hugged him, hard.

“Yep, oxygen isn’t important,” he wheezed as he hugged her back. Sophie nestled her forehead into his shoulder. It was so good to hear his voice again.

“What did—how long—” He started to ask.

“Keefe?” Elwin burst into the room and stood there, staring. Then he ran over, eyes wet, and—being Elwin—started examining him.

Several hails, several people, and several hours later, Keefe and Sophie had slipped away and were running through the halls of Foxfire. The adults were discussing Keefe’s checkup results and their friends were undoubtedly freaking out.

They found themselves surrounded by white walls, and decided they could finally rest.

“That was… overwhelming,” Sophie panted, her hands on her knees.

Keefe nodded. “It was nice to see them all again, though. I can’t believe…” He trailed off. “I would’ve thought Fitzy would be a bit more grumpy, at least with you, after... ” He waved his hand, vaguely indicating Sophie’s fight with Fitz and everything that had followed it and messed up her life.

“We… made up. We’re not fighting, but we’re just friends.” Sophie said hesitantly.

Keefe paused and looked at her sideways. “I can feel your disappointment, Foster,” he started, “and we both know I’m not good at the serious, supportive thing, but… whatever happens, I’ll always be here.”

      Sophie smiled. “Thank you, Keefe.”

They walked in silence for a bit until Sophie decided they needed to talk about what his mom had done. Keefe had said he felt no change in his ability, but Sophie got the feeling he was hiding something.

“Keefe, is your empathy really the same?” She asked.

“It’s exactly the same. No change.”

      “Then what’s bothering you?”

      “Nothing,” He insisted.

Sophie raised an eyebrow. “Keefe,” she said sternly. She knew he was thinking about something he didn’t seem to want to share.

“Alright, Foster, you win,” he put his hands up in surrender and sighed. “I know I should be over the whole my-mom’s-an-evil-person thing by now—”

“No, Keefe,” Sophie cut him off, “that’s the kind of thing that’s so hard to accept… Nobody thinks it’s that easy for you to just get over it, and nobody expects you to. I know you’re not the kind of person who loves to sit and talk things out, but…” she looked at him and smiled. “I’m here.”

      “Thank you, Foster.”

“Now, why did you think you should get over your mom?” Sophie got back on topic.

“Well, I know she’s not a good person, but the fact that she doesn’t care about me enough to make me sleep for weeks because of some dangerous element combination…”

Sophie nodded. “Why do you think she would do that to you?” Sophie was worried about what Gisela’s plans might be.

“I… I have no idea,” he sighed. “Listen, Foster. I know my mom’s an awful person, but whatever she did to me… I’ll live. I’ll be fine. And even if I’m not, who cares?”

“I do, Keefe!” Sophie grabbed his hand.

He sighed again. “Maybe you shouldn’t.”

Sophie shook her head. “I won’t ever stop.”

Keefe gave her a sideways smile, and they walked on in silence. Sophie realized she was still holding his hand, and she squeezed it. She began to let her hand slide away, but instead of letting her go, Keefe twined his fingers with Sophie’s.

They stopped simultaneously and found themselves in Keefe’s ditching spot, where Sophie had first met him.

She was suddenly hit with a wave of exhaustion. Sophie’s mind felt like a plate of scrambled eggs. She had so many things she needed to do, so much to think about—stellarlune, caches, Lady Gisela, magsidian, shadowflux, Glimmer…

Sophie sighed. “How do you guys put up with me, Keefe? My life is all over the place.”

“It’s easy to put up with you, Foster. Especially when you worry and get all cute.”

Sophie scowled and leaned against the wall. “I’m serious, Keefe! I’m ruining all of your lives.”

“No, you’re making them better,” Keefe assured her as he turned toward her and took a step closer. “And you know… I’m always serious, Foster. Especially when you think I’m teasing.” Sophie could feel his breath on her cheek.

And that’s when it hit her.

Sophie’s mind took her back to all the times Keefe had called her cute, had joked with her, had smirked at her and made her blush—all the times he had teased her.

How much of that had really been only teasing? Had he liked her all along?

Sophie looked up at him. “Keefe?” She breathed.

He smiled and put his free hand on her back. Sophie’s heart fluttered and her cheeks warmed as she realized how close they were standing. Before she knew what she was doing, she put her hand on his arm, stood on her toes, and closed her eyes. As her lips found his, the only word she could use to describe how it felt was…

      Right.

    • So normally at this point, they would get interrupted by someone - Fitz, Grady, Sandor, Ro, Biana, etc. - but not this time! I decided to have some extra mercy on SoKeefe.

This one's a lot shorter. It's also more cheesy and more serious at the same time. Here you go, guys!

    • At first, Sophie was unsure of how Keefe would react, but he kissed her back so passionately, every other thought disappeared from her head and she melted into the kiss.

Sophie slid her hand up his arm and onto his shoulder, digging her fingers into his carefully styled hair. She kept her other hand connected to his.

Keefe pulled her closer, and Sophie let him. He let go of her hand and put his on her back, and Sophie leaned into the embrace as her hand moved to rest on his shoulder.

She had never felt so happy in her life, not even when Fitz had told her he liked her. Sophie had thought that idea would make her guilty, but there was no guilt, hesitation, worry, or reservation in her mind over kissing Keefe. Only joy.

She had never thought of Keefe as anything more than a friend, or ever felt anything stronger than friendliness toward him. Until now. Now she felt something much more. Something that could only be described as love.

Sophie loved Keefe. That was the truth. She had never thought those words would enter her mind, but how much did it matter what her head told her when she knew what she felt in her heart?

Sophie broke away from the kiss and laid her head on Keefe’s chest. She could feel his heart, beating hard.

      “Sophie?

She looked up. Keefe didn’t usually use her first name.

He smiled at her. “Thank you.”

Sophie smiled and rested her hands on his chest. “You’re welcome, Keefe.”

    • Sophie put her head on Keefe’s shoulder and wrapped her arms around him. They stood like that, in a soft embrace, for a while. Then Sophie broke the silence.

      “Keefe, how long have you—”

“How long have I loved you?” Keefe cut her off. “How long have I been jealous of Fitz because of the way you looked at him? How long have I tried to tell myself we didn’t need to be anything more than friends? How long have I spent thinking about you?” Keefe’s expression had turned wistful.

      “I—” Sophie started.

“For as long as I can remember, Foster. And now… Well, at least I know you like me just a little,” Keefe smirked.

In the moment, Sophie had forgotten about Keefe’s empathy. But she wasn’t embarrassed that he knew how she felt about him. In fact, though her heart had been fluttering the whole time, Sophie knew now that it wasn’t a sign of nervousness. Not with Keefe. With Keefe, it was a sign of love. And deep down, Sophie had loved Keefe for a very long time. She just didn’t know it.

“Keefe, I… I love you.” The words burst out of her without her planning on saying them, but they still rang with truth.

“Sophie, I have been waiting for what feels like my whole life to hear those words,” he whispered as he brought his face closer to hers. “And I love you, too,” He breathed.

She leaned forward, and their lips connected again. This kiss was shorter, but even more passionate. It almost felt like a glimpse of the future.

Keefe, did you know that I…” Sophie couldn’t find the words.

“That deep, deep down you really liked me?” Keefe asked.

      Sophie nodded.

“Well, after you manifested in enhancing, it gave me a little peek of the emotions in your heart,” he explained, “which were more… shall we say, romantic towards me than the ones in your head.”

Sophie thought about that. “That makes a lot of sense.” It really did, which was a bit unusual for Keefe.

Keefe laughed, a sharp and clear sound that echoed through the silent hallway. “It does now, Foster. It does now.”

Sophie sighed happily. It turned into a laugh, though nothing was really funny. She guessed she was just relieved that she understood her feelings now.

Keefe joined her in laughing, and soon they were both laughing so hard it hurt and hanging on each other to keep from falling on the floor. Sophie had never heard Keefe laugh like this, so genuine and happy. It was a beautiful sound.

Keefe suddenly swept both of them up and kissed Sophie on the cheek. It was just a simple, happy peck. But it meant a lot.

Keefe pulled away, grinning like mad. Sophie was still giggling a little bit.

And then they were interrupted by a familiar voice saying, “what’s so funny?”

Sophie and Keefe both jumped, but not apart. Sophie kept her hands on Keefe’s elbows, and he kept his where they were on her back.

It was Dex. He looked suspiciously happy, standing there with a knowing smirk on his face and his arms folded. “Well?”

“Nothing. Really,” Sophie added when Dex raised his eyebrows. “We were just… enjoying ourselves.” And each other, she silently added. After all, they really were laughing because each other’s presence—with no masked feelings—was amazing.

“I see.” Dex nodded slowly. “Glad to hear it, but we’ve all been looking for you two all over the place. You might want to come with me.” He turned around and began walking.

Sophie and Keefe looked at each other, shrugged, and turned to follow Dex. Keefe’s arm stayed noticeably on Sophie’s back, which she was fine with— in fact, she liked it.

When they got to the healing center, Fitz was the first one to notice them. He was also the first one to notice Keefe’s arm around Sophie. He stared at it with a mix of sadness, anger, and longing. Instead of dropping it under Fitz’s gaze, Keefe just pulled Sophie closer.

Grady soon joined Fitz in glaring, though he at least talked.

“And where have you two been the past hour?”

Had it really been an hour? Sophie had lost track of time.

“We were enjoying ourselves,” Keefe replied unhelpfully.

Grady narrowed his eyes, but Sophie cut in before he could say anything. “We were taking a break from the healing center. It was getting really stuffy in here.”

Grady grunted doubtfully. “What are we going to do with That B—Keefe—now that he’s woken up?”

“Take him home,” Della suggested. Everyone seemed to agree with that plan.

“I don’t have my home crystal,” Keefe said.

      “Hmm. I wonder if—”

Sophie interrupted him. “I could teleport him,” she suggested. The look on Keefe’s face said he was happy with that idea.

Grady shook his head. “I don’t—

Edaline put her hand on his arm. “What’s the harm, Grady? Sophie can take care of herself.”

Grady expression softened, and he grunted. “Fine.”

Sandor stood up, making the cot he had been sitting on creak. “And I will go with them,” he said pointedly.

But Keefe had already grabbed Sophie and started levitating, though the ceiling was barely high enough to teleport.

Sophie remembered how she had teleported without levitating when taking Keefe back from Loamnore, and realized Keefe didn't know about that. She decided to let him keep holding her—It was nice.

Besides, it took a lot of concentration to teleport on the ground, and she had a certain distraction that was shouting up at her at the moment.

“Sophie, get back down here right now and take Sandor with you!” Grady yelled up at her.

“I don’t need a bodyguard for this, Dad. I can protect myself.”

“Don’t worry, Grady. I’ll take care of her.” Keefe assured Grady.

He did not find that very assuring, apparently, judging from the look on his face. Sophie could tell Grady was about to ground her for hundreds of years if she didn’t come back down.

“Dad,” she called down. “Do you trust me?”

“Of course I do, Sophie, but I don’t trust him.”

“If you trust me, you should trust Keefe. I'm just going to take him home and come right back. We'll be fine.”

And she plummeted into the void, Keefe holding her the whole way.

Also, in my experience. once you've put romance into a story, you can't really write about anything else or it gets super boring. So just... know that this isn't really like KotLC level stuff, it'll probably mostly just be about SoKeefe.

So yeah! Just so you guys know... :)

He is crazy! I have never seen anyone dance like he does. I'm not saying it's good, but it's crazy!!! The real stupid-danegrous part of this though is that sometimes he'll do dangerous dances, like the time he did a front flip off the floor even though he can't even do one on the trampoline.

He also does flips into our neighbor's pool... I tried doing it where he did and man it hurt so bad!!! But he does a lot of things that would put normal people through an insane amount of pain (that flip? he landed on the floor and the landing would've broken my back.).

I feel like I am oversharing.

You are not oversharing. I like hearing these things. My brother does things like that too.

        Loading editor
    • Nah, not oversharing! That;s basically exactly what my brother does!!! He says he can do a front flip and to prove it he starts doing it and I'm like "NOOOO!" and he's like "WOOHOO!" and then lands on his back, shakes his head and gets back up, and continues dancing. Meanwhile, I'm just staring at him in shock, blinking.

    • Thanks, guys!

I'm going to go wite the next part... I need to get my eyes away from technology so ima go climb the tree in my backyard and write it up there :)

I'll check in on how far I am when I get too cold :)

      Talk to you guys later!

    • Hi guys, I'm back!

While I was in the tree, I cried (happy tears) because you guys are so awesome! You didn't really need to know that, but I felt like sharing, so... :) Yeah, I'm weird. And I'm proud of it!

The neighbor's dog started barking at me while I was writing (the branch I was sitting on extends over my neighbor's yard), and then my mom called me in for dinner. So I wasn't up there for very long, but I finished the rough draft of part four.

It got a little longer than I expected, and I wanted there to be another sort-of cliffhanger, so this part didn't include what I thought it would. Therefore, it is less interesting than I thought it would be. But I will start typing it out tomorrow, and then I will post it and the part after this will actually be interesting! I promise (I think).

      Good night, all!

    • As Sophie entered the void, she realized she didn’t know where they were going. Keefe’s ‘home’, but where was that? Her first thought was the Shores of Solace, but Sophie knew that Keefe had never felt at home there.

Where did he feel at home? Keefe wasn’t the kind of person who would get attached to a building. Especially not one where his parents lived.

In order for a place to feel like home, you had to feel happy there. So where did Keefe feel happy?

“Keefe?” Sophie grabbed his hand from her waist and weaved their fingers together. “Where are we going?”

“Home.” Keefe smiled at her. “I think Della meant the Shores of Solace.”

“But that’s not home,” Sophie guessed.

Keefe shook his head, staring thoughtfully at the black nothingness that surrounded them.

“Then where? Candleshade? Everglen? Havenfield?” Keefe shook his head at each one, though he paused on the last.

“With you,” Keefe said softly. He looked at Sophie with an emotion she had never seen directed at her. She couldn’t tell what it was—something similar to love, but different. Whatever it was, it made her cheeks warm.

She smiled at him, but brought his attention back to their predicament. “Then where do we go?” She wondered.

“Home... “ Keefe replied, then shrugged. “I don’t know where that is.”

Sophie decided to try something. She had never used emotions to go somewhere from the void, but she didn’t know where to go. So she gripped Keefe’s hand and told him, “okay, empath, we’re going on an adventure. Channel the feeling of home.”

“It’s about time we did something interesting,” Keefe smirked at her. Sophie turned on her enhancing, and though Keefe was looking at her a bit strangely, she soon felt his emotions join hers in front of them. She didn’t know where they would end up, but she thought it was time they did something fun. Something that wasn’t stressing about midterms or the Neverseen.

She knew Sandor was going to kill both of them if she didn’t come back quickly, but just a quick little detour couldn’t hurt, right?

Their emotions built up until they had made a ball of energy big enough to open the void. Thunder clapped.

Sophie and Keefe tumbled out of the void into a landscape unfamiliar to both of them.

Describe what kind of place you think they ended up in.

Remember: They have never been there before!

OOOOOH Keefe's new ability should be a should and it should be a dark forest but calm and peaceful enough so that anyone could feel at home there, even a flasher

    • Keefe landed on his feet coming out of the void, and was very proud of himself until Sophie landed on top of him and knocked him over.

She rolled off of him and sat up, blushing, but Keefe just chuckled. He stood and helped Sophie to her feet.

She looked around to see where they were, and her breath caught.

They stood in a wide clearing. Trees surrounded them in  a crescent, sunlight leaking through their leaves, birds twittering in their branches. On their other side, a wide meadow stretched, filled with bunches of colorful wildflowers. In the distance was a mountain. The sound of water flowing teased Sophie’s ears from nearby.

The place seemed to have every possible landscape, combined and fit together seamlessly. It was beautiful. A cave loomed near the river, and the forest seemed to grow into a jungle farther in. It was strange, but beautiful. Sophie turned back to the meadow, where the side dropped into a cliff. She imagined she heard waves.

She glanced over at Keefe. Sophie imagined her expression portrayed the same look of amazement as his did. How did this place exist?

      “Where are we?” Keefe breathed.

“I don’t know. I’ve never been here before But it’s beautiful,” Sophie replied softly.

Sophie took a tentative step forward. The sunshine was so warm and inviting, the ground so warm and bouncy. She couldn’t help but take off her shoes. Sophie left her boots in the clearing after pulling them off, and treaded over the soft grass with Keefe at her side. She went deeper into the forest, a pair of squirrels running overhead.

They got to the river before Sophie spoke again. “This place. It feels like…”

“Home,” Keefe finished for her. Sophie nodded as she climbed onto a rock at the edge of the river, putting her arms out for balance. Keefe took her hand as she stepped from rock to rock on the riverbank.

“It feels more like home than anywhere I’ve ever been,” he agreed, “and I’ve only been here for a few minutes.”

Sophie stepped to another rock. “Keefe, you seem more… serious.”

“I know.” He made a face that wasn’t a smile, but wasn't quite a frown.

      “Why?”

Keefe sighed. “I joked around so much to deal with stuff, and hide my feelings. I teased you because I wanted to make it seem like I didn’t really love you. I didn’t want to ruin my best friend’s relationship, especially if I was wrong about the emotions in your heart. So I made my feelings seem like a joke, just another thing to laugh about.” He knitted his eyebrows.

“But now, Fitz cares more about your match status than he does about you, and I know you really do like me. I don’t have to worry about getting rejected or ruining a relationship you’re happy in, so I don’t have to mask my feelings.” He smiled. “I can be completely honest with you.”

Sophie smiled at him, taking her attention away from the particularly slimy rock she had just stepped on. She slipped towards the river, letting out a small scream. Before she could fall in, Keefe pulled her away from the bank and into his arms.

Sophie let out a shaky sigh and leaned her head on his shoulder. “Thanks.”

“That’s what I’m here for, Foster.”

“When are you going to stop calling me Foster?” She wondered.

“When I can’t anymore,” Keefe replied simply. Sophie turned her head and looked at him.

      “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“A lot of things.” Keefe shrugged, smirking slightly. “Now I hate to break it to you, but if you don’t take me to the Shores of Solace and get back to the healing center soon, Grady and Sandor are both going to kill me.”

Sophie stepped out of his embrace and sighed, knowing he was right but not ever wanting to leave this place.

“I’m pretty sure I saw a cliff back there…” Keefe stopped at the look on Sophie’s face.

“We won’t need it. I can teleport from the ground now. We just need to sprint.”

Keefe looked at her, seemingly unsurprised. “I should have known you didn’t need to manifest a new ability to have some cool new power.” He smiled and brushed Sophie’s hair behind her ear. “You really are amazing.” He swooped down, kissed her on the cheek, and turned. “We really should go now,” he sighed.

Sophie agreed and grabbed Keefe’s hand. They walked to the clearing, and Sophie put on her boots. They turned toward the clearest path, breaking into a run.

Sophie sprinted faster and faster, pulling Keefe along. Energy built up in the back of her mind. Sophie let it grow larger and larger, then shoved it into the space in front of them, opening the void.

Sophie imagined the Shores of Solace in her mind, and soon it was looming in front of her. Lord Cassius stood on the porch, arms folded.

“I’ve been expecting you, Miss Foster.”

It is on the shorter side this time, and not terribly exciting... but here you go.

But first, just like always, I have to thank you all for your support and amazingness and stuff. You guys remain the best! :)

    • “Lord Cassius.” Sophie frowned. “Why didn’t you come to the healing center when Keefe woke up?” She wondered. “I know Elwin hailed you.” She folded her arms.

Keefe’s father frowned. “I had other matters to attend to.”

“How are these ‘matters’ more important than your son waking up after sleeping for weeks?” Sophie raised her eyebrows.

“Many reasons, Miss Foster. None of which you need to know.”

Sophie scowled, but she was really glad Lord Cassius hadn’t come when Keefe had woken up. If he had, the day would have gone in a completely different direction. And not a good one.

“Wait a second. Where’s Ro?” Sophie realized that she hadn’t been there either.

“When she heard that my son had woken up, she began to attend to matters of her own,” Lord Cassius said, then looked at his son. “I wouldn’t go into your room quite yet if I were you.”

“You’re not me,” Keefe grumbled, then turned to look at Sophie. “You should probably get back now,” he said, giving her a sad smile.

“Will you be okay?” Sophie glanced at Keefe’s father and knitted her eyebrows.

“I always am,” Keefe assured her.

Sophie was still a bit worried, but she nodded. “I’d better go. I’ll see you later,” she promised.

Keefe gave her a smirk. “Of course you will.”

Sophie wondered what that was supposed to mean, but just waved and started sprinting. As she opened a crack in the void, she looked over her shoulder to see Keefe climb up the steps to the Shores of Solace—his house.

      But not his home.

Sophie arrived in the healing center to a bit of shouting.

“Where were you?” Grady asked, his voice raised more than it needed to be.

“The Shores of Solace,” Sophie answered simply.

“You were gone for half an hour,” Edaline said, eyebrows furrowed. “What took you so long?”

“Lord Cassius,” Sophie said, mostly truthfully.

“Grady just about ran all the way to the Leapmaster and leaped there himself to make sure you were okay,” Biana informed her.

“But I tracked down your location, which was, as promised, the Shores of Solace,” Sandor put in.

Sophie breathed a sigh of relief, glad they hadn’t found the place she and Keefe had originally gone.

“And I reminded him that if you were in trouble, you would have pressed your panic switches,” Dex volunteered.

“Then I convinced him that Keefe is a good kid, and would never hurt you.” Edaline smiled.

They all grinned at her like they had done a huge favor, while Grady grumbled “I’m still not sure I believe that one.”

“Um… Thanks,” Sophie replied to the rest of them, a bit confused.

Alden cleared his throat from where he was standing in the corner. “We should probably head home now. It’s getting late.”

Everyone agreed, and soon Sophie was back in her room at Havenfield, prepared to climb into bed. She thought about Keefe. It would be lonely, sleeping without him snoring in  his cot next to her. Sophie took Iggy out of his cage, placed him on her pillow, and climbed into bed. Soon, sleep overtook her. Sophie’s mind replaced her pet imp’s snores with Keefe’s, and she slept peacefully.
