  • Ch. 1

“Mom! I’m off to school!” I yelled. I waited for Mom to come rushing up the winding staircase to the Leapmaster 2000.

Of course, she did. “Oh, I’m so proud of you, honey!” exclaimed my mother. “Make the Noble level teachers proud!” She embraced me, barely letting me breathe.

“Of course, mother!” I was still mad at her about the way she took the “Brant situation.” Still, I love her. Just then, Dad rushed in.

“My little girl’s all grown up!” he said. He closed the gap between us to embrace me, and I prepared for the gut-smashing squeezing. After all of that was done, I mad a beam of light to Foxfire with a crystal, like always, and was just about to step into it when Grady yelled, “Wait!”

I turned around and saw him clutching a small box. “Jolie, I brought something for you…” he trailed off. I gasped as he opened the box. I had nearly forgotten about the tradition that my parents started when I was a Level 1.

“It’s… Beautiful!” I breathed, as I picked up the charm from my father’s hand. I placed it on my charm bracelet on my wrist. It jingled as I found the right spot amidst the seven other charms. I took in the beautiful silver unicorn, glinting with the intricate carving along the mane and horn.

“Wow, I love it… mom and dad.” I said, embracing them one final time. They were super surprised. After all, this was the first time I called them “mom and dad” for a while.

“Bye, mom! Bye, dad!”  I yelled, once again feeling like a little girl on the first day of school. Of course, I'm nineteen, and this is NOT the first time I went to school. I stepped into the beam of light...

    • Ch. 2

“Ms. Ruewen,” called Master Leto. I turned around in my seat, facing him and his gelled hair. “May I have a word?” I got out of my seat and made my way towards the door. Halfway there, I noticed everyone staring at me, so I hid behind my hair.

      I don’t like attention.

      Especially after Brant.

Master Leto wrung his hands as he led me to a seat in the hallway. “Jolie, have you heard of a… uh… rebel organization?” The label struck a bell, but I didn’t know which one it struck.

“Well, uh, not really?” I said. Then I realized that made me sound awkward, so I said, “I mean, I’ve heard of it but no one’s mentioned it directly to me.”

“Oh, okay.” Master Leto kept wringing his hands, as he said, “Well, um, this arrived for you.” He held out his hands, clutching a small, rolled up piece of paper.

I carefully took it from him, saying, “This arrived at the dorms?” No one told me anything about a direct-messaging service. I would have to ask my mother about sending mallowmelt tonight.

“Yeah. The sender didn’t want me to pass it to anyone else,” said Leto, his eyes darting around the hallway. “Anyway, you should look at it in private. These halls aren’t the best places to see something like that.”

I put the paper in the pocket of my cape, glancing around the vicinity. Sure enough, there were a couple stragglers eagerly listening.

“Sure,” I said. “I should probably-”

“Ah, yes. You should head back. I wouldn’t want you to miss any part of troll history. It’s very important. And Jolie?” I turned back around, facing Leto. “Be careful.” I let the words slide around in my head as I walked back into the classroom.

Leto was acting weird, and something was up. But what was up? I half-glanced at where the teacher was talking about some cocoon-shell thing, then decided it was boring.

I started doodling my thoughts in my notebook, as usual, and wrote a letter to Brant.

      Dear Brant,

Something super strange just happened. But before I tell you, I’ll answer your previous questions.

I’m doing well, and I miss you! Level seven is fine, but I miss you more than ever. Now you’re not only working in the Sanctuary, but I can barely visit you. I really need to see you sometime.

Anyway, back to the “strange occurrence”. Master Leto pulled me out of class to give me some important note that someone dropped off. I didn’t even know that there was a posting service in the elite level towers! He gave me the note and told me to open it in private. He also asked me a weird question - he asked me whether I’d heard of rebels. I said “kind of” because we hear about those strange elves all the time.

I think they’re crazy. There’s no reason to rebel. The Lost Cities are as perfect as always. Anyway, you have the best advice, so I thought I’d tell you.

      Love, Jolie

I carefully ripped the note out of my journal and rolled it up. I took out the ribbon from my hair and tied a knot on the paper. While Lady Tiikwerie was turned around, I conjured the paper to end up in Brant’s room. I remembered it like the back of my hand, so I chose a spot that I knew he wouldn’t miss. I closed my eyes to imagine him again. His handsome features. His stern eyes. His warm hands...

“Miss Jolie,” said Lady Tiikwerie. I remembered where I was, and I opened my eyes. I saw Lady Tiikwerie’s tall figure looming over me with a textbook in her hand. I hid behind my hair, as the rest of the class broke out in giggles.

      “Y-yes?” I said, slightly trembling.

“Seems like you really like our passage today. Why don’t you read the next paragraph from your textbook,” she said, pointing at the pages I had opened.

This is when I hope that I had my father’s attention.

      My mother’s acting.

      Or Brant’s charm.

But I have none, so I settled for scanning the page and classroom, trying to pick up hints on where we are. Of course, everyone has their book closed, and are staring at me expectantly.

Right when I was about to turn myself in, a soft voice said in my head, “Page 3.” I turned and saw that Sewart, sure enough, had his eyes closed. I softly groaned but obeyed.

I heard the voice again, “Trolls’ extraction method.” I found the paragraph and started reading it.

“The trolls have to extract their babies at an early stage because their babies are such humongous creatures.” Lady Tiikwerie seemed surprised that I figured out the exact page and paragraph, that she forgot to tell me to stop reading.

And I kept reading. All through the class. When the bell rang, everyone picked up their books, and started walking towards the door. I just conjured them to my locker. The shortcut - the conjurer way.

As I walked to study hall, lvvy fell into step with me.

“Just so you know, I know you weren’t paying attention. I know that it was that suck Sewart who helped you. Oh, and tell Brant that I’ll be booting you out of here faster than he can say rebel.” I rolled my eyes, ignoring that she called me a rebel. Ever since word got out that Brant is my fiance, my friends bailed on me, and people started acting like I was the plague.

‘Nah, I like it here. But thanks for the offer. You know what, I’ll take you up. There’s this really pesty girl who bugs me a lot. Perhaps you know her? She’s got fiery orange ringlets and turquoise eyes. It would help if you,” I paused for effect. “Boot her out of here.” There’s no point being nice when there’s no reason to.

I sauntered away, satisfied, as Ivvy slowly realized that the orange-haired turquoise-eyed girl was she. She turned up her nose and sashayed the opposite direction like a true diva. And being a Vacker, it amplifies that. I’ve caught Gerel Babblos staring at Ivvy a few dozen times.

I stepped into the study hall and realized that I didn’t know where to sit. I was the first time back in Foxfire before Brant and I went public.

      I had no friends.

    • Ch. 3

I chose a table near the corner of the vast room and sat in silence. I slowly pulled out my textbook and started my troll history assignment. It was mostly boring - why would I ever need to know why trolls are inserted into giant shell thingies?

I reached into my pocket, trying to find a pen or pencil, and instead my fingers brushed the tip of the note Master Leto gave me. I gently took it out, unraveling it.

The moonlark has sailed, and the song has been sung.

You, my friend, are the one that has been found.

The time has been set for noon tomorrow,

Come meet us so we can see what we have to expound.

Come to the place you can only see

      A golden-winged parakeet.

“Huh?” I said out loud. Heads turned in the direction of noise, and each gave me the stink eye. I buried my face in my hair, and turned back to my assignment. The whole time I was doing them, though, a question haunted my mind.

      What did the note mean?

What does “the moonlark has sailed” and “the song has been sung” mean?

And why do I have to be explained to?

Does it have anything to do with the weird things Leto said?

Before I could continue this train of thought any longer, I sensed some movement on my table. I looked up from my textbook, and saw… “Sewart Redek?”

“Yep, that’s me,” he said, with a nervous laugh. “Well, uh… is this seat taken?”

“No, no, you can sit.” Sewart lowered himself into the seat and took out his books. “So, uh, thanks!”

“For what?” He asked me, his icy blue eyes boring into mine.

“For helping me find the passage in trollish history,” I mumbled. People were already starting to look up at our table. A Redek and a Reuwen in one place? Strange combination!

“Well, no problem. I do it all the time,” said Sewart, cheerfully. We then resumed our assignments, and a long, silent stretch began. Soon, it was time to go back to our dorms.

      See you.

I jumped. I realized that the voice was Sewart’s.

“Sorry! Do I have permission to enter your thoughts? This way people don’t stare as much.”

“Sure.” I said. There’s not many fun things in there, anyway.

Well, bye then. Sewart said. Then, his eyebrows scrunched up, and he looked at me, wide-eyed. Sorry' '- I didn’t mean to see it, but can I see the note?

      My eyebrows shot up.

      It’s fine. I said.

I rummaged in my pocket and gave it to him. He took the note and looked through it. He mumbled something to himself that sounded like “swan” and handed the note back. With that, we parted directions, and I held up my home crystal, landing in front of Verdi.

“Hey, Jolie!” shouted my mother. “How was your day?”

“It was fine. As usual.” I said. I didn’t want to tell anyone else about the note - not until I figured out what it meant. I stopped by Verdi to pet her, and then ran inside the house. The familiar smell of yummy food and pristine surfaces greeted me.

I stumbled upstairs and lay down on my bed, not bothering to take my cape off. “Back already? You look frazzled!” Said Vertina, my best friend.

“Yeah. I can’t wait to tell you everything, but first, I better open my note from Brant.” I walked over to my desk and saw that a note from Brant was lying there, as I expected, and tore the envelope open. I relaxed in my fluffy armchair, and read it out loud to Vertina.

      Dear Jolie,

I miss you! It’s great to hear that everything is going fine for you. Everything’s fine for me too! But first I have to say - and please listen. I know your stubbornness better than anyone:

DO NOT EVER TELL ANYONE THAT YOU KNOW ABOUT REBELLIONS. I DON’T WANT YOU TO GET INTO ANY DANGER. HEAR ME? DON’T!

I fell back in my chair, staring at that line. Why would it put me in danger?

    • Theory: Could Alden be evil? I mean he asked his daughter to be friends with sophie so that he could spy on her - and he's NEVER there when they solve something - also, he knows ALL the plans. The neverseen aare always a step ahead of everyone - he might be the reason! Maybe that's why alvar's in the neverseen...

      Kinda random, but yeah.

Since that’s outta the way, I just want to say that I’ ve missed you so much! There’s not a whole lot to do around here - and I can’t practice a fun ability like you can. I don’t have one. Anyway, here’s a poem for you:

      Jolie, you’re my heart.

      Thumping and beating.

      You jerk me awake.

      Beating faster and faster.

      I need you to survive.

      Can’t let the heart stop.

      I need to protect you.

      Because, Jolie, You’re my heart.

      Hope you like it!!!

      XOXOXO, Brant

      (P.S. Can I visit tomorrow? )

I cradled the note in my arms. I barely see Brant anymore, with him helping out at the sanctuary, and I being at Foxfire. When he visits, my mom makes it a big celebration, since it’s so rare.

“Mother!” I shouted. My mom must’ve been in her office because she opened the door to my room right away.

      “What, honey?” she asked, gently.

“Brant said he wanted to visit tomorrow is it fine?” My mom smiled and nodded.

“It’s perfect because I thought of throwing a party anyway.”

      “Why?”

“Oh, parties don’t need reasons!” I rolled my eyes. Mom’s favorite thing is parties - there was no way she would go a month without throwing one. She soon left, and I was left staring at the note that Brant wrote.

“Jolie!” said Vertina, my magical mirror. I walked over to her, making sure my hair wasn’t messed up (she would comment on it immediately).

      “Hey,” I said, “What’s up.”

“Oh, nothing! I just wanted to see you! Anyway, you didn’t update me on everything today.” I looked down at the note I was clutching. “It looks like a whole lot happened.” Vertina’s voice softened, seeing my expression. I quickly explained to her about the two strange occurrences in one day, and Brant’s latest letter - a strange one.

“You’ve had an exciting day, then!” said Vertina. “But you look very stressed.” Vertina’s mirror glowed as she led me through steps to make myself feel relaxed and refreshed - of course, she took the time to lead me through a few simple steps to conceal my dark circles while she was at it. “See! Good as new!” she said. “Now, let’s see that note!”

Vertina is more than just a mirror/stylist to me - she’s an amazing friend. And I especially need her now, since I don’t have any other ones. “Here you go.” I said, holding it up to her mirror.

“Hmm. That’s a strange note, but I’m good at riddles. I can decipher it.”

“Are you sure?” I asked. Vertina rolled her eyes at me, then changed the color of them. She can do that. “Are you kidding? I have access to every single secret that a person could have. After all, I’m a mirror and mirrors see everything - and hear too. I’ll just tap into the footage other mirrors record and find out.” seeing my disgusted expression, she immediately says, “We don’t record everything - only things we find important and benefit other people.”

The mirror blinked out while Vertina was gathering information, and I sat down in front of it.

“Hey, honey!” said my mom in her usual sunny voice. “What are you doing?”

I quickly concealed the note in my cape, and replied, “Nothing, Mother. I was just thinking about what to wear tomorrow for the party.” My mom clapped her hands.

“Ooh! Exciting! What do you want to wear?” Since I hadn’t thought of anything, I had to improvise as I reached into my closet. I pulled out a pale, green dress. It was probably the simplest dress I had in my wardrobe. It only had some ruffles, but it looked perfect for tomorrow.

“How’s this?” I asked. Mom looked surprised.

“Well, isn’t that a little out of your style? I mean, no glitter, no sparkles-”

“That’s fine. I’m just going for something a little simpler tomorrow.”

“If you want to, then.” Mom said, “What about accessories?” she urged me over to my dresser, opening my cabinets.

“Umm… I better ask Vertina, then.” I replied. I walked over to the mirror, feeling sorry that I had to disturb her in her research, but right then, she popped up.

“Good news, Jolie! I found what you asked for!” Mom looked at me awkwardly. I had to improvise again.

“So you found the hairpin I was looking for? That goes with this dress?” I caught Vertina off guard, so I seized the chance to cover her up with Mom. “I was just about to show you a list of some accessories that go with this dress that Vertina and I came up with together. Vertina? Do you have the clip?” I repeated.

Hopefully, she got the message that mom was in the room.

“I hope you like these,” Vertina said, buzzing out quickly. She left five images on the screen of accessories.

This was going to be harder than I thought. How would I ever hide this from my parents?

And as a grammar lover, when you’re calling someone “Mom” or “Dad” or anything in place of a name it’s capitalized like a nickname. But if you say “my dad” or “my mom” it’s lowercase because it’s just a noun, like “my lamp” or “my book.” I noticed it’s a few times in the first chapter. But overall this is SOOO good!!!! “Is all the food set up?” I asked Mom, staring at the empty table. She chuckled and conjured all the food onto it in neat rows. I rolled my eyes and picked up a custard burst, biting into the creamy deliciousness.

“Is it good?” Mom asked, looking at me expectantly. “Did I get the custard just right?”

“As usual!” I said, smiling. “One moment,” I say, heading up the stairs to my room. I closed the door gently and grabbed Brant and Leto’s notes.

“Vertina! Did you get the information?”

“I think so - you won’t like it, but I think I did. Can you show me the notes again?” Vertina lit up as she tried to look closely at them. Then a bright flash lit the room and the notes were gone.

“What happened?” I grumbled, rubbing my eyes as they regained vision. I realized that I wasn’t holding the notes. Then, I looked up and saw something on the screen of the mirror. The notes.

Vertina seemed to be recovering too. “Wow, suddenly I feel exhausted.” Then she saw the notes. Her eyes widened. “So it’s true. That’s what the flash was.” She whispered. I scrunch my eyebrows, looking at her for answers. “I’ll explain later. But for now, I need to look at these even closer.”

The short girl from my mirror experimented, grabbing the notes from the position they were set at. She made a table appear and sat down looking at the notes closely. I was still in shock when I slipped out of the room and ran smack-dab into Brant.

“Hey, Jolie!” said Brant, being his cheerful old self. “I’ve been looking for you.”

I ran towards him, giving him a hug enough to blow up his insides. “I missed you,” I whispered. He might’ve whispered you too but I couldn’t hear. A question was humming up in my brain. I pulled myself away from Brant and said, “Explain the letter.”

“What letter?” Then Brant’s expression darkened as he registered what I was talking about.

“Those organizations could do dark things to you. Don’t join them.” he looked at me thoughtfully with his sparkling grey-blue eyes. Then, he looked away. The rest of the evening was rebel-talk-free. I saw random relatives that I didn’t know, and a few that I’d met.

When I had a quiet moment, I slipped into my room to check on Vertina’s process. When I got there her mirror wasn’t on, so I gently knocked on it. Her face instantly showed up, and I saw a look of joy on it.

“Hey, Jolie! I figured out the note!

The moonlark has sailed, and the song has been sung.

I didn’t exactly understand this line, but I know it’s about a project one of the rebel teams are working on. I couldn’t find details, because they smartly avoid mirrors.

You, my friend, are the one that has been found.

They chose you to work on that project.

The time has been set for noon tomorrow,

Come meet us so we can see what we have to expound.

Come to the place you can only see

      A golden-winged parakeet.

These lines are pretty straight-forward. They want to meet you tomorrow, which would be today considering that they gave you the note yesterday---”

“Vertina? They’re talking about today? That means I need to go now!” I shouted, diving for my closet. Inside I found the plainest white tunic and black leggings. I adorned my hair with a silver rose (I couldn’t resist), and pulled on grey boots.

“Jolie!” I heard Vertina shriek. “Go to the Leapmaster quickly! You have to head to Heatherbrook! That’s the only place where you’ll see the golden-winged parakeet.” I froze in my frenzy. Heatherbrook? That’s the last place I would think the rebels would want me to go. Heatherbrook?

What did Tiergan have to do with any of this?

    • Ch. 7

I slowly tip-toed up the stairs to the Leapmaster 2000, trying to blend into the white walls of Havenfield. With black leggings. Luckily, everyone was preoccupied (Mom just got dinner out) so I slipped into the Leapmaster unidentified.

“Heatherbrook,” I said, stepping into the flashing light. I felt myself being pulled apart and twisted every which way, as the light led me away from my home. I landed, sprawled, across a flower bed. I scrambled up trying to regain composure before seeing the rebels.

“Hello, Jolie,” said a voice. I turned around, and saw Tiergan, clad in his royal robes and jewels adorning his circlet resting on top of his head. He seemed to be going green today. Councillors have a thing with matching accessories. “I’ve been waiting.”

“Um, hi?” I said, weakly. My eyes flitted to a tree behind his head, spotting a golden-winged parakeet. “The note said...”

“I’m the one who delivered the note. I know what it says. I mean, the one who mailed it to you.” My eyes widened.

“But you’re a councillor. You can’t work for rebel organizations. It’s violating-”

“None of that now, dear. First let me tell you why you’re here,” Tiergan took a deep breath. “Jolie, we have chosen you to join our organization. At this time, we don’t have a name,” he said warily, “but nonetheless, a rebel organization it is.” He droned on like this for a few minutes, explaining the rules to an organization she wasn’t a part of.

“We chose you to be a part of our organization, because of your amazing creativity, strong powers, and intelligence. You would be an amazing asset to our organization if you join. If you don’t… Well, you’ve got to be wiped then.” I shuddered. I’d never been wiped, and I don’t want to. Wouldn’t it be weird to have holes in your memories?

“Our primary cause is to make sure the world lives in harmony, nothing else. If you want to benefit us, then you can join us.” said Tiergan, crisply. “Just think about it.”

He led me over to a shed - or what I thought was a shed - and opened the door. It lead to a vast room with shelves up to the ceiling. This room obviously was the work of shade and a flasher. No one could hide things that well without aid.

He scuttled over to a shorter shelf on the other side of the room, and revealed a lock on the side. It clicked open with his DNA, but I couldn’t see what was inside. Councillor Tiergan quickly shut the door. He put something in a pouch and handed it to me. “If you decide, open this. Otherwise, you can return it to me.”

      “Umm, sure, but-”

“Jolie, you should go now! I’m having some visitors soon - they can’t see you.” Just then, I heard some footsteps from outside the shed.

“Tiergan! It’s Cyrah!” shouted a familiar voice from the entrance of the shed. “Something’s happened! Come quick!”

Tiergan quickly said, “Jolie, you should go home now. I have to deal with something.” Then he rushed out. He left me all alone with a choice unmade…

I glittered in my room, facing the worried looks of both of my parents. “Jolie?” said my mom, surprised. “Is that you?” She ran over to hug me. Grady, however, stayed on the edge of my bed. He looked kind of upset.

“Yeah, mom.” I said, weakly. How would I explain my disappearance to them? I clearly couldn’t tell them about everything.

“Poor boy. Brant was looking for you all night. At the end, he was left interacting with people he didn’t know. Anyway, why did you leave?” Mom looked at me curiously. I wilted.

“Umm, well-” I said, about to spill.

“Hi Mr. and Mrs. Reuwen!” said Vertina in a cheery voice. “Oh! Jolie! You’re back! Do you feel better?” I regained composure. I knew Vertina would save me. Only if she was actually an elf.

“Uh, yeah Vertina.” Meeting my mother’s eyes, I lied, “I felt a little… disoriented after being so isolated for so long, so I had to leave.” I hung my head.

“It’s okay sweetie,” said my mom rubbing my shoulder. My dad got up, seemingly leaving, but stopped in front of me.

“You know, you can tell us anything. We’re here for you.” I rose my head, meeting his eyes. He knew that something was off.

“Okay, father.” I said. My dad broke eye contact hearing that and left the room. My mother got up afterwards and left, giving me a small smile.

I should have told them. I share everything with them, for except this sensitive information. A few minutes later, I heard loud talking and thumps from the lower floor. I got out of my bed to find out what was happening.

I went down the immaculate staircase, approaching the bottom when I heard his voice. Tiergan’s voice.

“We need your help. Cyrah’s faded away.”

I rush to my mom. “Where are you going?” I asked, blocking the only exit.

“We’re going to find out what happened to Cyrah Endal.” She finally fell into contact with my eyes. Her warm turquoise eyes settled on mine, and she sighed. She pulled out the ribbon from my hair and said, “See this ribbon? We bought this from her.” My eyes widened. That Cyrah, huh. A couple years ago I remember that her husband was taken as a prisoner.

“I’m coming.” I said. Tiergan stopped our meeting because of this, so it must be important.

“Jolie,” said my mom warily. Then she sighed. “I guess.” I ran upstairs and pulled a cloak out of my closet. I sprinted back down and saw Tiergan waiting for me.

“Hello, Jolie. I guess you intend to come along?” said Tiergan, with his sparking eyes. “In that case, I have something to tell you.”

“What is it?” I asked. The weight of the pouch still thumped against my leg. “Does it have to do with Cyrah?”

“Yes.” Tiergan quickly glanced around, kind of like Leto did yesterday, and then turned back towards me. “Cyrah didn’t fade away by accident. It was something that distracted her. A rebel organization.”

“Are you telling me it was you guys?”

“No. Another one. The one we are against. These are the people we are dealing with. The people who broke Cyrah’s concentration. The rivals.” he let that echo before he added, “These people we’re dealing with are dangerous. And the only way to stop them from doing more things like this is to rebel. Choose wisely.” Tiergan straightened up as we heard footsteps.

“We’ve called the councillors. We better be on our way soon.” said my father. “I assume you’re coming?” he says to me. I nod. “We better leap now, then.” We ran upstairs to the Leapmaster2000, and let the light take us away.

The wanderling is planted, young Wylie is given a home, and we are sent to rest. A week has passed since Cyrah faded away. Now I’m left on the bed, feeling empty. The pure hopelessness that surrounds not being to help someone is fantastical, really. Maybe that’s why this rebel organization - the one I’ve been given entry to - was made.

It would be great to help. Satisfying, really. I reached into the pouch that I had been given a week ago and pulled out a small black box. There was no opening. I set the pouch down on a tabletop. A small piece of paper falls out.

“Huh,” I think. On top of the paper, it says, “I’ll do everything in my power to help my world.”

The box opens with a flash that resonates in the room, and I’m left holding a pendant with a swan. It came with another note, “Welcome to the Black Swan.”

“Jolie?” called Vertina. I looked up from my homework. It was an especially boring paragraph about magsidian, so I pushed it aside.

“What’s up?” I scooted closer to her.

“Well, ever since you opened the box, I’ve been thinking. Maybe it’s best if you record all of your feelings, thoughts, and super sensitive information somewhere. Like a journal.”

“That’s a point,” I said, “But how can we make it so that no one will find it?”

“Do what you did before.” I gave Vertina a questioning look. “I mean with the light zapping and stuff. You know how the note disappeared into me?”

“Sure, but if I write in a journal, how will I bring it back out again to write?” Vertina looked frazzled.

“Uh… unzap it?” I rolled my eyes. “Maybe… mirror it!” Vertina exclaimed.

I rolled my eyes, then gave her a quizzical look. “Sure, okay. You figure something out. It’s a… valid idea. I’ll start writing now, though.” Vertina disappeared right away, but I lingered in the same area. Is it really necessary to get back to that homework? It’s pretty much useless. When will Magsidian and Ethertine even intervene in my life?

I lay down on my fluffy bed, having retrieved a pink journal and a pen with a plume, and started writing:

      Day 1:

Let me just recap the events of the past few days. I met with

No. That doesn’t feel right. What if someone finds out I have a notebook and reads through everything. All my darkest secrets - revealed! I need a better. Something that inspired all this. Vertina! A mirror! I spot a small handheld mirror near my dresser and flip it open.

It was something that Brant got me for a gift once. It was really pretty with all of the dainty beads that curled into a swan. It was nothing like you would find in these elvin areas, so I just assumed it must’ve been from someplace I haven’t been, like Loamnore.

I start writing backwards, with the aid of the mirror. To encode my journal further, I wrote in ancient runes.

      Day 1:

Let me just recap the events of the past few days. Many things have happened. I found out that there are rebels amidst us, then I joined them. Cyrah died, and Tiergan took in Wylie. Of course, a councillor can’t have family, so it also caused him to resign. Now someone shall take over his responsibilities.

I don’t understand why anyone would distract Cyrah. Did they want to find the elven world in a weak state so they can, like, take over or something? Well, that’s only a revelation. I don’t know if these “good” rebels are telling the truth when they say they have rivals. And now I've joined them. Would that make me a rebel? Or a do-gooder? My mind is muddled. Only if I could talk to a real person, like my parents or Brant, but this is supposed to be a SECRET.

I let out a frustrated breath. The journal didn't clear my mind, it clouded it over. I collapse in my bed, and close my eyes. A question brews inside me as I go through the week's events. Tiergan wouldn't have given the poem that brought me to him to someone random. He gave it to Master Leto, so does that mean he's a rebel too? Is he... part of the Black Swan?

    • Ch.11

I dragged myself out of bed, tired from all the bad dreams, and sluggishly walked into the bathroom. What a week. I step into the shower and wash away all of my worries. The shower always helps. I pull on an especially frilly dress, and take out a pot of lip gloss I’ve been saving.

I bring out my dark brown eyeliner, and outline the curve of my eyelid. Then I decorate myself with matching earrings and bracelets.

“Vertina! How do I look?” I asked, shining into the mirror.

“Ooh! Nice! Is that lip gloss new? I’ve never seen it. It’s shimmery!”

“Yeah, mom and dad got it for me for my last birthday. How’s my hair?” I asked, knowing the answer. I didn’t do anything to it, so Vertina will say…

“Um. It could use some work. I know the perfect hairstyle, though!” Vertina led me through a series of confusing steps to get the perfect hair. It worked out well at the end, though!

“Wow, that red dress really works for you. You should wear red more often!” I grin. As I prance down the stairs with my foxfire cape in hand, I hear some voices in the living room. My parents.

“Edaline, I’ve been getting these for a while. They’re threatening us now. They’re threatening my Jolie.”

“But you can’t join! We’ll just inform the Councillors!” says my mom.

“Yes, but what if something happens to Jolie?”

“Nothing will happen to her. We’ll keep a close eye on where she’s going.” I hear the clink of plates, then silence. I decide this is the best time to enter the room, so I run down the rest of the stairs and take a seat in the living room.

“Hi mother! Hi father!” I say, cheerfully.

“You’re looking excited today!” I grin so wide that my cheeks threaten to rip. I pull out something I’ve been hiding in my cake.

“What’s that?” asks my dad, taking the bait. Mom comes over out of curiosity. He examines the small brown box that I was holding a moment ago. When he opens it up, his eyes glow ten times brighter, looking at the two starstone rings that I got them.

“Jolie! You didn’t have to!” Today is my parents’ anniversary, something they’ve forgotten about. I haven’t though. And for all the lies I’ve lied recently, this is the only thing that can make up. Otherwise, the guilt would be unmanageable.

“Yes I did!” My parents pull me in for a bear hug, crushing a few dozen bones with the pressure. “I love you guys,” I whisper. I sit back down and resume eating my breakfast, and afterwards head to the Leapmaster. Nothing could defeat my good spirit today.

I pick up my bag where it lays on the table, and something falls out. “What’s that?” I murmur to myself. There is only one symbol on the note. An eye.

My head is still at my house when I arrive at school. What were my parents talking about when I interrupted? School went by fast enough, but this thought didn't leave. I made my way to study hall and took my spot in my usual table.

I stare at the astronomy notes blankly. I don’t get it. Then, I hear a familiar voice in my head. Sewart.

Hey, uh, is this seat taken? He asks, sounding shy. He does this every day.

No, it’s empty. I say, smiling.

Sewart sits down next to me casually. Luckily, no one notices. A Reuwen and a Redek is not a good combination. Many conflicts have happened because of them crossing each other’s path at the wrong time, so now everyone thinks we are, like, allergic to each other.

I stare blankly at my notes again.

“Uh.. would you like some help?” asks Sewart. I look at him blankly, showing exactly how much help I need.

      “Yes.”

“Well...” said Sewart, his eyes scanning my notes. “Let’s start with the constellations.” Turns out, Sewart’s a pretty smart Redek. He did this course when he was a level 6, so he’s really ahead of me. He’s funny, too.

“There you go. Understand?” He asks, leaning back in his chair. He looks pretty relaxed. And he’s dragging attention toward us. Who cares? I do.

“Yeah, I get it now.” I say, shy, once again. Sewart realizes that people are watching, and immediately turns back to his own paper.

Hey, Jolie? I try not to look up from my homework. His voice sounds really serious. I nod subtly. He continues, Did you go to Heatherbrook? Do you know?

I look up at him. I nod again.

      Did you-

      I joined. I’m a member.

Sewart looks surprised. Really? Aren’t both your parents Regents? Wouldn't it be bad if anyone finds out that their daughter joined the rebels?

I didn’t think that through. He made a point. Wait a minute, how do you know all that? Are you part of it too?

Yes. I’m the one who chose you.

“So, that’s what happened.” Vertina just asked me for the daily feed from school, so I ended up telling her everything. “Honestly, you’re better than an elf friend. At least you didn’t abandon me.”

“You know what they say. Mirrors are an Elf’s best friend.” Vertina said, grinning.

“I don’t think that’s how it goes, but I’ll roll with it. Anyway, I better log in today's entry in my journal.” I got out the journal I started a week ago, and wrote about the day’s events.

It was so shocking. I can’t believe Sewart-

I jumped five feet up when I hear Sewart’s voice (Speak of the devil, right?), "Jolie! Tiergan wants you at his house. Can you make it?"

I’m still not used to him being in my head. "Yeah, I’ll come in 10."

Sewart replies, "See you there, then." Sewart is super nice. He's the only friend I've had in a while.

I dive into my closet, trying to pick out the perfect outfit. I came out with the same thing that I wore to Tiergan’s house two weeks ago. I lift my head up and gently groan.

“Mom!” I yell. What excuse should I use? Homework? Friends? School? Study? Or Teacher/Professor? Yes! “Mom! I’m going to go over to...” Which one? Let’s settle with closest to truth.“Councillor Tiergans’ house. He was going to introduce me to someone to make my conjuring more powerful.”

“Sure, honey! Grab a thick cape, it’ll get chilly today.”

“Sure!” As I grab the thick cape, I pass the eerie note I found yesterday, and scoop it into my pocket. MIght as well inquire about this “eye” too.

“Bye, Mom!” I shouted, stepping into the wall of light. I ended up in Heatherbrook’s garden again. I stood up spitting out petals of petunias.

“Hello, Jolie. I see Sewart’s delivered the message that we need you.” said Tiergan, guiding me to a fountain in his garden. “Take a look at this.”

And I did. “It’s pretty, sir,” I said carefully. “but why?” I asked.

The look on my face probably asked the question before I did, because he said, “Look closer.” Then, I realized what it was. A statue of a human and an elf. “This is what we’re working for. Harmony.”

The word travels through my veins, making every inch of my body shake, finally ending up in my mouth. “Harmony. When do I get started?”

“Now,” said Tiergan. “We have a mission for you. It’ll only take a few hours. Will you be able to do it?”

I nod. “What should I do?”

“You need to leap to the Forbidden Cities.”

“How?” It then occurred to me that Tiergan used to be a Councillor, so he probably had his ways.

“I have my way,” Point made. “Just wait here, I’ll be right back.” He walked into the shed that we went into last time, leaving me in the beautiful garden. I realized, at some point, that he couldn’t have lived here when he was Councillor, so this was probably a summer house or something. I guess it was backup for when he resigned from his position or something.

“Hey,” said someone. I turned around, facing my worst enemy.

“Why are you here, Ivvy?” I asked.

“I think I should be asking that question.” said Ivvy, snobby as always. “Answer me.”

“I’m part of the rebel organiz-”

“I know. So am I.” Ivvy rolled her eyes. “I can’t believe this. Did you know we’re working together for our mission? Who am I kidding? You probably do, ‘cause you’re the ‘favorite’.” Ivvy smirked.

“Wait? What do you mean? We’re working together? I didn’t know that!”

Ivvy rolled her eyes and said, “Get used to it. Apparently we’re the ‘ultimate team’.”

This time, I rolled my eyes. “Obviously not.”

“Yeah, he missed by a year.” Ivvy said, her expression changing from placidness to a sadder emotion. I looked away. Luckily, Tiergan comes out of the shed right at that moment.

“Hey, girls! You look well acquainted! Want to give me a hand here?” Tiergan motioned to the piles of boxes next to him. How did he even get them out of the shed?

“Sure!” I exclaimed, heading towards the pile. I try to pick one up. It’s heavy. “Tiergan? What’s in here?” I asked, grunting. Ivvy rolls her eyes and comes to help me. It’s been a while since we’ve worked together for something.

“You can put it over there, girls.” said Tiergan, motioning towards the human/elf fountain. Ivvy and I work smoothly, working in a rhythm - lift, walk, lift, walk. Before I know it, we’ve moved them all. Without thinking, I raise my hand to give her a high five, and she gives me one, laughing. Then we remember.

“Wow. You two must have some history.” Tiergan says. Then he looks at the boxes, lifts them up, and puts them by the entrance to the house. My jaw unhinges.

“Why did you make us do that if you already could move it with your mind?” I asked.

“For teamwork. I’m not going to send you two bickering sparrows if you can’t work as a team. And I guess you can.” Tiergan smiled, looking at both of us. “So, your mission is to slip this toy into a human baby girl’s room.”

“That’s it?” said Ivvy, always expecting more.

“Well, it isn’t easy. You’re going to the Forbidden Cities, and you have to slip into a house of three without anyone noticing. Especially with one very speculating parent.” Tiergan hands me a Blue leaping crystal. A forbidden crystal.

“You guys are delivering this plush swan. And not for just anyone. A human. The moonlark.”

      Ch. 1

    • Ch. 15

We appeared in a grassy area near a community of some sort. It had REALLY tiny houses. Havenfield was pretty big compared to these houses, even though it’s small in elvin standards. I guess humans are just different.

“So, all we have to do is figure out which house the baby lives in, and drop the toy off.” said Ivvy, taking off her human coat.

Copying her, I said, “Yes, but we also have to watch out for humans, because they can’t see us dropping a random toy in someone’s window or something.” We picked up our pace as we neared the community. “Hey, Ivvy, I don’t think these guys put nameplates in front of their houses. How are we going to figure out which one’s the baby’s house?”

“They have these numbers instead.” said Ivvy, showing me a slip of paper. “I’ve done a couple missions like this before. They were all for the baby.” Ivvy must be experienced.

“How long have you been in the Black Swan?” I asked cautiously.

“For around two years.” Ivvy said, looking away. “Oh, here’s the house.” Ivvy said, pointing to the paper. “It’s number 1798.” Ivvy changed the subject. As usual.

“How are we gonna get the toy in without them seeing us?” I asked.

Ivvy rolled her eyes saying, “Watch me.” I followed her up to the door of the human house, watching her knock the door.

A middle-aged woman opened the door, a child in her arms. “Hello,” she said.

“Hi! We’re starting a fundraiser for forests! If you would like to help, sign here!” said Ivvy, pulling a mini clipboard from an unseen pocket.

The woman took the clipboard and signed her name on it. Ivvy took it back with a smile I’d never seen her wear. “Thank you, ma’am! And here’s a complimentary stuffed animal for your cute little daughter!” The baby clapped its hands with delight and took the toy from its mother.

“Thank you, girls!” said the woman closing the door.

“Wow, that was smooth.” I said.

“Well, I’ve been doing this for a while. It’s pretty easy. These guys open their door for everything. It’s very easy to be deceitful around them.”

“So it’s rather simple for you, huh?”

“No, it was hard in the beginning, doing all this alone, no one to talk to.”

A long stretch of silence passed between us.

“Why didn’t you tell me, then? I would’ve helped.”

“You were all busy with Brant, and I felt that… that… I shouldn’t disturb you. You were really happy.”

My eyes widened. “Is that why you’ve been ignoring me? Because I’ve been ignoring you?”

“That, and the fact that I was just jealous.”

“Jealous of what? You’re the one who’s a Vacker, and you’re really pretty in elvin standards too. In Lost Cities standards… you’re off the charts.”

“Ha-ha. I was jealous of you. You were all the Black Swan was talking about. It was a rebel like you that they needed.” Ivvy hung her head. “I was just an average.”

“Ivvy? You don’t need to be jealous of that. You know that it doesn’t matter. The truth is, through all those months, I’ve missed you so much. I needed someone to talk to. A friend.” Ivvy looked at me, a smile curling up on her face.

      “Best friends?”

“Forever.” I said, firmly. I’m starting to think this organization was just what I needed.

“Here’s a good spot to leap.” said Ivvy, raising her leaping crystal. Our bodies were pushed and prodded every which way as we kept our concentration clear in the light tunnel.

“Girls! You’re back sooner than I expected! Did everything go smoothly?” Tiergan asked, his eyes wandering to our clasped hands.

“Yes.” Ivvy said, dropping the blue crystal on some sort of pedestal.

“Good. Now, Jolie. I have something to talk to you about.” Tiergan said, ushering me into the secret-garden-magic-shed. What could it be this time?

“Jolie, the rebel-rebels have contacted you. They want you to join them.

“So, let me get this straight. The rebel-rebels supposedly left a note in my cape that I didn’t see, asking me to join them.”

“Yes,” Tiergan said, his eyes reflecting worry into mine. I looked down. I just don’t know what to believe.

“Why me? And how do you know it’s them?”

“Maybe you’ll understand if you see the note.” Tiergan pulled out a pouch from his pocket.

      “A feat you’ve never-seen. An action you would never-find. A future you would never-think. A prank...”

    • Ch. 16

“So, let me get this straight. The rebel-rebels supposedly left a note in my cape that I didn’t see, asking me to join them.”

“Yes,” Tiergan said, his eyes reflecting worry into mine. I looked down. I just don’t know what to believe. I’m still new here.

“Why me? And how do you know it’s them?”

“Maybe you’ll understand if you see the note.” Tiergan pulled out a pouch from his pocket, and scooped out a leaping crystal along with a note.

I leaned forward to read it.

Oh powerful one, you've been chosen. Follow the given path to find what you have won. Come to us to be at the top. The odds are never-seen.

“That was quite anticlimactic.” said Ivvy, quick to point out the obvious.

“Yes, yes. But that is not what matters. What matters is what’s in the pouch.” Tiergan said.

      “The leaping crystal?” I asked.

“No, no.” Tiergan, “Well, yeah. But look here.” Tiergan flipped the pouch inside out. Turns out, it’s not a plain velvet pouch. It actually had an intricate embroidery of stars.

      “What is it?” I asked.

“Well, we can’t tell yet. Some of our other agents are on their way to help us figure it out. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s a constellation of some type. It may be unidentified.” Tiergan said, massaging his scalp. Just then, young Wylie came through a side door.

“Help me!” he said. Wylie was a cute little dude, with fuzzy hair.

Ivvy turned around, and registered his cute face in a split second. Then she was all up in his tiny face. I giggled. Ivvy didn’t change one bit. “Dad! Ement is ripped!” said Wylie, struggling from Ivvy’s grip.

“Give it to Kyli. I bet she can fix it!” Wylie thought about it for a moment, then ran back the way he came from.

“Anyway, are you sure you’re looking at it the right way?” asked Ivvy. “To me, it looks like some homework that Sir Astin gives us. We have to figure out the missing star.”

Tiergan got thoughtful for a moment. “Maybe you’re right. We’ll have to test that theory. Anyway, Jolie, you better go home. You have a lot of information to process.”

“Good idea, Tiergan.” said a familiar voice behind me. “I think we’ve got some business to deal with.” I turn around facing Sir Astin.

“Sir...” I said, not sure what to say.

“Yes, yes. I’m part of the Black Swan. You better get home, Jolie. We’ll talk later.” In that fazed state, I pull out my home crystal and hold it up to the light.

The words of the note ring in my head.  Oh, powerful one. I'm not powerful. I'm just that average odd-one-out conjurer. I'm just a girl. Why am I even wrapped up in this? What do they want from me?

The light lifts me up, twisting me in every way possible, but I know I’ll come out of the tunnel of light at the end into the warm and comfortable home that I’ve always known.

But something’s wrong, because I don’t see my home or the peaceful fields. I just see endless bursts of color and light, blinding my eyes. I think I’m… stuck?

I feel like my head is in the clouds as I float through the bright light. “Where am I?” I think to myself. I’m all alone in a void of nothingness. Perhaps it should stay this way…. Less things to worry about…

But then I saw… Brant? And he was… saying something. “Jolie!” Was that my name? Jolie… sounds familiar. I wanted to know more, so I headed towards the sound. I ended up in a clearing with duller lighting. The area in the middle, though, had seven bowls. Each had one color in it. Opal. Orange. Green. Red. Violet. Navy. Pink.

My hand glided over each of the bowls, stopping over the opal light. I suddenly had the impulse to dip my hand in the light. I scooped it up in my hands.

Suddenly, the light became over-powering, and started eating me up. Soon, I was engulfed in the brightness. The opal light finally took my vision, and I was left looking at black. The heat seared my mind, and pain took over my body. Right when I was about to burst, I… woke up?

“Jolie!” exclaimed my dad, hugging me. “We were so worried!”

“Where am I?” I muttered groggily. “More importantly, what happened to me?”

“You’re in Elwin’s office right now. We found you out in the fields behind our house. You were fading.” The word sends a shock through me. Fading? Isn’t that how Cyrah Endal died?

“Miss Reuwen, you’re better now. I had to whip up a solution on the spot though.” Elwin said, chuckling. “We’ve never had this happening. I suppose you were just deep in thought about something you couldn’t spare the concentration on light leaping.”

“S-something like that.” I muttered. Is that what all of those colored lights in the light tunnel were? Were those even real? Am I hallucinating?

“Anyway, Mr. and Mrs. Reuwen, I insist you go home. It’s getting late, and Jolie needs to rest. You can return tomorrow morning with her food and clothes.”

      “Are you sure-”

“Don’t worry Grady, I’ll take care of her.” Dad nodded and light leaped away. Mom left a moment after.

“How are you feeling now, Ms. Reuwen?”

“My head feels kind of cloudy, and the room feels dark. Kind of like it needs some more light.”

“Ah.” said Elwin. He seemed to be thinking about something. “Jolie, I need you to tell me what happened when you were about to fade. What happened in the light tunnel?”

“Well, I felt trapped in all of these different bursts of light. It was too bright for me, so I tried to find a duller area. In the clearing I went in, there were seven bowls - each had a different color.”

“Do you recall some of the colors?” asked Elwin.

“Yes, there was opal, violet, deep Blue and a couple others.”

“Perhaps, were they red, orange, green, and baby pink?”

      “Yes, those are the ones!”

“And you say there were only seven?” I nodded. Elwin muttered something about abilities to himself.

“I felt the urge to scoop the opal light in my hands - and then I did. That’s when everything started hurting.” Elwin stood up. “Is it something bad?” I asked.

“No, it is, in fact, splendid. I think what you experienced was a choice. A choice of an ability.”

“Hey, Elwin?” I asked. He looked up from the papers he was filling out. “Can we keep this a secret?”

He sighed and put down his pen. “Of course. It’s up to you.” He picked up the stack of papers and made his way into his office. He picked up a fallen vial on his way, balancing it on a stack of books across the room.

      “Hey, Elwin?” I called.

“Gah!” I heard. I assumed it was Elwin dropping everything he had piled in his arms. “Yes, Jolie?”

“What did you mean earlier by a choice of an ability?”

“Oh, I don’t think it’s anything of your concern. You should be getting some sleep.”

Elwin turned away, gathering the fallen papers from the floor.

“Hey, Elwin?” I called again. Elwin must’ve gotten startled, because the jar he was balancing in a crate toppled over. “Ooh - sorry.” I said, apologetically.

“It-it’s fine.” Elwin said, turning back around.

“I just wanted to say, you said it was a choice of an ability. I chose the color opal. What ability does opal correspond to?”

Elwin sighed. “It corresponds to a flasher. You're quite the curious one. Now, get some sleep Jolie. You have to wake up and go to school in the morning.”

That night I had recurring dreams about me dipping my hand in the opal light. What does it mean that I’ve now chosen? I let the opalescent light engulf me. I sink in…

“Jolie!” I woke up to the panicked voices of my parents and Elwin. “Jolie! Wake up!” I opened my eyes, greeted by their relieved faces.

      “What?” I asked.

“There was light coming out of your skin - like, every inch.”

“Must’ve been a side effect of the fading.” said Elwin. “We better keep you here under observation for another day.” Something about the look on his face made it seem like he was covering something up…

I sighed. Yay. I get to miss out on Black Swan stuff for yet another day. “Well, we better tell someone to get me my homework.” My parents looked at eachother. They both know very well how I’ve practically got no friends right now.

“You can go ask Ivvy.” I said. “You can give her the sheet of paper above my desk so she can find each of my classes.”

      “Wait, when-”

“I’ll fill you in later,” I said. “You guys should probably go now, though. You guys are regents.”

“Okay honey, we’ll be back for you in the evening.” I smiled. Mom set the container of delicious ruyfuy soup on the table next to me and light leaped away. Dad kissed me on the forehead, and he left too. He left me all alone. Well, almost. In the back of my head, I knew that I would have to lie to them later about this too. I turned to Elwin. I still have something to do.

“Now, Elwin. Tell me what is happening.” I tried to look at him in the fiercest way possible. He chuckled.

“Well, what I told your parents was a white lie. In your case a light-lie.” He laughed at himself. I rolled my eyes.

“What I suspect is that when you chose the color, it corresponded to an ability - in your case flashing. So you basically chose your new ability.”

“Wait… what?” I asked. This was a lot to register.

“This is common in a lot of conjurers and empaths. They normally gain another ability along the way.”

“So what I went through was normal.” I let out a breath. Everything will be fine.

“Not exactly. I’ve never seen anyone get powers this way.” he paused. “Jolie, you had a chance like no other. When you dipped your hand in the bowl, you said it felt like an impulse, right?”

      “Yeah, exactly.”

“Well, that impulse was your raw emotions telling you what you really wanted. And you wanted to become a flasher. Now, another part of the mystery is how you suddenly turned your powers on this morning.” I nodded my head. I had a feeling Elwin was getting somewhere. “What were you dreaming about?”

“I was kind of replaying what happened in the light tube.” I said. “When I woke up, I was basically imagining myself engulfed in opal light.”

“That must be what activated your powers.” I rolled the idea out in my head.

“Wait! Does this mean that I’m not a conjurer anymore?” I tried conjuring some books from my locker. In my haste, I forgot to aim the books somewhere safe. They ended up appearing in mid air and landing two inches from Elwin’s foot. Wait - where did the third book go?

Elwin bent down to pick up the books. “Elwin, don’t-” The third book landed on top of his head.

“Well, this day was eventful already.” Elwin said, rubbing his head with a smile. “I think I should talk to Dame Alina and get a Flasher appointed to you for school. Meanwhile, don’t smack anyone else on the head with your books okay?” He chuckled.

“Sorry.” I said sheepishly. I went back to staring sullenly at one spot, sitting in the corner.

“Jolie?” I jumped up. The image must’ve crossed my mind, because Sewart said, “Sorry - didn’t mean to startle you. Anyway, why’re you out of school?”

"I'm not really out of school." I didn’t know how to explain it, so I let the memories roll in my mind.

“Wow. You’ve had an eventful week. I can't imagine how it must feel. I've got an idea, though, of how you can use these powers to their fullest. Did you try to imagine a different colored light? If the colors all work like that, you could be really powerful!”

      “Hmm. It’s worth a try.” I said.

“Anyway, I’ve got to go. Lady Tourmaline is giving me the stink eye.” Lady Tourmaline's stink eyes are the worst.

I imagined the violet light from one of the bowls - it was the only one I remembered vividly, since it's my favorite color. I opened my eyes, and nothing seemed to have changed. Maybe I didn't do it right?

Just then, Elwin came into the room with some papers. I rushed up to him to tell him Sewart’s idea. “Hey, Elwin!” I said, excited. Elwin froze on the spot.

      “Jolie? Where are you?”

“I’m right here. Can’t you see me?” I asked.

“No. If there is some monster here, I’m armed!” He said, pulling out some kind of soft pencil.

“No, it’s me, Jolie!” Why can’t he see me? That’s only possible if… that’s not possible… wait, what if?

      What if I just vanished?

      It worked.

    • Ch. 21

I imagined the violet color again, hoping that it would do the trick and make me normal again.

I let out the breath I’d been holding in when Elwin said, “Jolie? Oh, it is you!” He set down the soft pencil (which I realized was an eraser) and said, “How did you do that?”

“I imagined a violet colored light.”

“You WHAT?” Elwin sat down in one of his plush chairs. He started murmuring to himself. Finally, he looked up at me. “I can’t believe it. I-I have no words. This means you have an unlimited arsenal of weapons, Jolie. All we have to do is to teach you to use them.” The look of disbelief disappeared as he added, “One day when you’re one of the councillors, don’t forget the one who guided you to power! You’re powerful!” Elwin said, winking. “You’re gonna have to inform your parents about this sooner or later.”

“Yeah, I guess.” I’m powerful? More like powerless. I didn’t want any of this to happen. Suddenly, I got an idea. “Elwin, do you think the reason that I literally have all abilities possible at my arsenal is because I chose the opal light? After all, in all of those bowls, there was one common thing. Light. And that’s what flashers control”

Elwin’s eyes widened. “I think you’re right, but it’s not like this for everyone. I’m a flasher, yet I don’t have an ability-switching ability. Everytime I think of violet, I don’t turn invisible.” Elwin fumbled in the pockets of his t-rex print robe for his imparter.

      “Who’re you summoning?” I asked.

“Curious, you are,” Elwin said, chuckling. “I’m summoning the councillors. A matter so big should be dealt with by them. But first - your parents.”

An hour later, everything about this topic was explained to them.

“I-I can’t believe this.” My dad said, putting his head in his hands. “Too much power is never a good thing.” My father has had a problem with power for a long time. Being a mesmer, he had to face a lot of prejudice.

      Because of his power.

“It’s okay, Grady. Jolie can handle it. My little t-rex can handle anything.” I put my head in my hands. I told them to stop calling me that…

      “Still-”

“I’m sure the councillors will be able to take care of it.”

An hour later, the councillors all arrived in their royal attire. Once again, I filled them in on everything..

“Let me get this straight - you had a choice to pick between seven colored lights in a light tube. You picked opal, so now you’re a flasher. And Elwin tells us that you barely had any damage from being faded - and now you tell us you can manipulate the other colored lights for different powers?” said Councillor Emery, the voice of them all.

“This is outrageous. And amazing. And-” Councillor Kenric cut off Councillor Zarina in the middle of her sentence.

“If she trains herself to control her abilities and use them swiftly… she could be an asset to the council, and essentially to the Lost Cities.” said a councillor. (I didn’t know her name...)

“I think we can all agree here that we’ve discovered an occurrence which is truly exceptional. We’re all looking forward to seeing you soon.” said Councillor Emery.. The councillors all glittered off.

Soon after, Grady and Edaline left too.

“I’ll be in my office if you need me.” said Elwin.

That night, this was all I could dream about.

The floating faces of the councillors saying, "You’re powerful…. An asset… exceptional."

I just can’t wait for this dream to end, because in the back of my mind, I’ve failed. I’ve failed to prove them wrong. I've failed to prove the rebel-rebels wrong.

    • Ch. 22

At some point in the night, my dream changes to the rebel-rebels. I see four cloaked figures pointing at me. “The time has come. Come to us now.” Wait… what has come?

I snapped my eyes open and sat up, breathing heavily. I almost forgot about the note! Tiergan never got back to me either.

I pulled my imparter out of my pocket and said, “Tiergan”. Hopefully I would reach him, and he would pick up.

“Jolie?” I heard a groggy voice say. I looked at the clock on Elwin’s desk. 2:34! I knew it. I should have waited longer.

“Sorry for disturbing you, Tiergan. I don’t know what came over me. I could have just waited until-”

“Nonsense. You can tell me, Jolie.” It seemed like Tiergan was less sleepy now, so I continued.

“I just wanted to know the progress with the pouch. And the note.”

“Oh, that.” It seemed like Tiergan was searching for something. “You’re a conjurer right?” I nodded. Tiergan brought a piece of paper up to the viewpiece of the imparter. “How about you conjure this to yourself. And the pouch.” I closed my eyes and imagined the piece of paper on the bed next to me. Then, I imagined the constellation pouch and its contents there too.

I opened my eyes and glanced at the bed next to me. Sure enough, everything was there.

“Everything is here, Tiergan. What should I do?”

“Nothing. Not for now. The paper I sent to you had some ideas for what the missing star thing on the pouch could be. Just look through them, and add other ideas if you get them. But don’t do anything. We need to devise a proper plan if you want to use that crystal. Sleep tight Jolie, and don’t think too hard about this.”

I scooped up the pouch and paper and set it inside my book bag. I’m too sleepy to think about all this.

This time, my dream takes place in a cave with an eerie chorus of voices singing,

“Oh powerful one, you've been chosen. Follow the given path to find what you have won. Come to us to be at the top. The odds are never-seen.”

      I shuddered in my sleep.

The note has kind of been a prediction so far. It said I was powerful, and somehow I kind of became powerful. Or full of powers. The rest of the note was just straightforward. I have to use the leaping crystal to go to them, and see what I have won.

      Wait. What have I won?

What have I done to win?

      Is it another prediction?

    • Ch. 23

“Honey, we brought your favorite!” I heard a voice say. I opened my eyes. They automatically wandered to a clock.

“7:45!” I exclaimed. “School starts so soon!” I jumped to action right away. I pulled out my leaping crystal and said, “I’ll be back!”

Once I got home, I leaped into the shower and took a record bath. “Jolie!” exclaimed Vertina. “What-”

“No time, gotta run!” I said, grabbing a rubber band to tie my hair up. I ran to the Leapmaster and got to Foxfire just on time. In the wrong room.

“Dear!” said Master. Kwolley, my Level One teacher. “What are you doing here? Orientation is about to start!”

“Sorry for disturbing you!” I said as I ran through the halls of Foxfire. How did the Leapmaster even get me here? I usually land right in a field of grass.

I pushed the thought away as my stomach grumbled. I didn’t eat any breakfast today. I passed by an extremely large crystal and saw my reflection.

“Is that really me?” I mumbled. In the mirror was a whole new person. She had messy, blond hair and mismatched clothes. Just then, Vertina appeared in the crystal.

“Hi Jolie!” she exclaimed. I jumped two feet up.

      “Aaah!”

“Did I startle you?” asked Vertina innocently. “I just came here because I absolutely hated your choice of clothing today and had to tell you about it.”

      I rolled my eyes.

“Also because you might need this,” said Vertina, showing me my journal. “You haven’t written in it the past few days, so I thought you could catch up today at school. Where would we get the streak of light, though?” she wondered.

"No probs." I said, imagining opalescent light. I lifted my hand and out came a burst of light that left me temporarily blinded. Huh. Better than every inch of my skin being luminated.

Vertina passed the book through the mirror to me and said, "You've got to tell me everything today." She disappeared, leaving me alone in the halls and late to orientation.

I was about to walk away from the crystal-mirror, but I noticed something sticking out under it. Another note. With another eye.

I flipped it over, and was greeted by a warning.

Come tonight in the moonlight or miss out on your gift. Follow the light and walk through the rift. Leave your tracks clean, because the stealthy are never-seen.

This one wasn’t as anticlimactic as the one before. I shoved the note in my pocket, promising that I would remind myself to look at it later, and sprinted to orientation as fast as I could. I was so late.

“Off to your classes now!” I arrived just as Dame Alina dismissed everyone. I groaned. As I was making my way to the first class of the day, Master Leto caught my eye. I walked right over to him. This matter was long overdue.

“Do you work for the black swan?” I asked.

He muttered something like, “You kids are always so sneaky,” and out loud said, “Yes.”

    • Ch. 24

I cautiously looked around me as I took out my diary. Thankfully, today I was isolated at the table. Sewart had detention today. It seems like he ticked off Lady Tourmaline at the wrong time.

Lady Tourmaline’s name is literally an oxymoron to her harsh personality.

“Jolie!” called Ivvy, walking into the room.

“Why are you late?” I asked

“Top secret business.” she whispered. I closed my diary and turned, giving her my undivided. She sat down and rolled her eyes. “It’s no big deal. I literally just dropped by Leto’s office.” she leaned closer to me. “You know what that means.” Her eyes sparkled.

      “What is it?” I asked.

“I can’t tell you. Come over to my house today, though. I’ll tell you then.” She turned to her Charger textbook, and I turned to my diary.

I had to recall last week’s events since I didn’t record anything in it for a while. Finally, I got to today.

      Day 13 (At school),

I just got assigned another mission with Ivvy. I know that the missions aren’t that major or anything, but I’m still excited.

I found a note from the rebel-rebels again. I think it means that I have to go tonight. How am I going to convince Tiergan to let me go? I think I need to talk this over with Vertina.

I closed the book when I finished writing and sighed. How am I ever going to keep track of all of my thoughts on my own?

“Jolie? We have to go.” said Ivvy.

“Why?” I asked, lifting my head from where it was resting on my notebook. (totally not sleeping)

“Girl, study hall is over. You’re going to make us both late if you don’t conjure us to The Universe right now.” It’s been a while since I saw Ivvy mad, so I thought I’d savor it for a while.

“Fine. But don’t blame me if your arm ends up in Claws, Wings, Horns, and Things.”

Ivvy rolled her eyes. “Not literally! Now come on, we’re late!”

We jogged to the classroom, afraid that Leto would find us running around and give us a merit or something.

I pushed the alchemy door open and we filed in quietly, praying no one would see us. Unfortunately, the opposite happened. “Girls? Out in the hall. I need to talk to you.” Apparently Master Leto wasn’t out in the hallways. He was in our classroom. Talking with Sir Werren.

      “Girls.”

“Are we in trouble?” asked Ivvy, even more worried than I was.

      “No, no.”

“Are you going to give us a merit?” I asked. Maybe I was worried too.

“Why would I give you a merit if you weren’t in trouble?”

“Seems like something you would do.” said Ivvy. I shot her a look. That’s not going to win him over.

He chuckled. “I’d like to know why you think that. I came here not to talk about punishments but about the black swan.”

      “Wait, you’re in-”

“Yes, yes. You kids are so naive. Couldn’t you tell when I gave you your acceptance letter? Anyway, Tiergan sent me to tell you that your mission for today is cancelled. He instead wants to meet the both of you in Heatherbrook after you two get home.” Ivvy looked kind of let down.

“Ok girls, you two better get back to class.” said Leto, walking away.
As soon as he was far from earshot, I said, “I know you’re upset, but I bet whatever Tiergan has in stock for us is good.”

“It better be. Anyway, I’m not upset.” Ivvy said plastering a fake smile on her face.

“Right… your hair is getting frizzy.” Ivvy quickly smoothed down her hair. “It happened again.” I said, laughing. Ivvy cannot hide it when she’s upset.

“Ugh. You know me so well!”

“Ah, girls. I see you’ve arrived.” said Tiergan. “Well, we better get started right away.

      “With what?” I asked.

“With the plan. For meeting with the rebel-rebels.”

      “Wait-what?”

“The Collective all agreed that it’s a good opportunity, but you should be ready.”

      “Who’s the collective?” I asked.

“Wait - you don’t know the Collective? Squall? Blur?” asked Ivvy. I shook my head. Ivvy sighed.

“I must’ve forgot to give you the welcome pamphlet.” Tiergan smacked his head. “Sit down, girls.” Tiergan patted the seat next to him and sighed. “I have a lot to explain to you about our organization and very little time.”

Thirty minutes later, with a bunch of new terms floating around in my head, we switch gears to the task at hand.

“We need to make a plan. I have a feeling this opportunity that the rebel-rebels gave us, meaning Jolie joining them, will expire soon.”

“It’s going to expire today.” I said. Tiergan looked at me questioningly. “I got another note.” I carefully pulled the note from my pocket and handed it to Tiergan.

“Interesting that they pick moonlight.” Tiergan said, reading it. Finally, he looked up from the note. “We need to get planning immediately.” Some time later, when all the collective ended up in Tiergan’s garden along with a couple others I’d never seen, we got planning.

Sir Astin and Master Leto worked with someone named Tinker on a gadget, while the rest of the collective tried to interpret what would happen. Tiergan, Ivvy, and I sat on a table and argued. We didn’t really do much. I suspected Tiergan was just babysitting.

“Jolie, you are a very capable young woman who has endured many things, but this is unlike anything you would imagine.” said Tiergan.

“It’s not much. All I’m doing is meeting the enemy.”

“Yes, but this puts your life at stake. If they find you as a threat, they could-” Ivvy trembled. “We just reconciled, I can’t bear the thought.”

“I know. I think you guys are overreacting a little. I mean,” I gestured to the busy garden. “It’s just a little meeting. They didn’t even propose anything, and I already have all these powers in my head. Do I need a gadget on top of that?.”

“What do you mean by powers, Miss Reuwen?” asked Tiergan.

“You don’t know about my unlimited arsenal of powers? Or, well so far the two that I’ve tried.”

“I don’t think any of us do.” said Master Leto. “I would like to listen, though.” And so I told them everything that happened in the past few days. About me getting stuck in the light tunnel, barely fading, changeable powers, colors, vanishing, everything.

“And all this happened between the last time we met and now.” said Tiergan. He seemed to be taking this very seriously. “You have to keep this a secret, Jolie. If the rebel-rebels ever find out about this, they could use you.” I nodded. “Which is the reason we need to make this more secure.” I groaned. This all was supposed to convince them that I could take care of myself.

“Yes. Jolie, please listen to them.” pleaded Ivvy.

“Fine.” I said. Everyone returned to their areas and what they were working on.

“Jolie, you are very lucky, because we can offer you a backup plan that makes use of your alternate powers.” said Master Leto. “But only in case of dire emergency.”

      “Bring it on.” I said.

"This," Leto pulled out a multicolored crystal, "is the moonstone.”

      “I’m sorry, Jolie.” said Tiergan.

      “Why?” I asked.

“We didn’t train you enough with your powers for this mission.” he said solemnly. I sighed.

“Tiergan this isn’t even that big of a mission. It's just a meeting. I’m sure I won’t need to use the moonstone.”

“Even so, you kids should always be prepared.” said Master Leto. “Let’s review how to use it one last time.” he said, scooping up the crystal in his left hand.

“Fine,” I grumbled, “But please let this be the last time.”

“Since this is a semi-crystal machine, you must be careful. The inside is a mess of metal, while the outside is delicate crystal. To use it, you twist it like this,” Leto twisted the top half of the crystal 180 degrees. (he specified that) “Then, you telepathically talk to the crystal and tell it where to take you. Finally, let a burst of light from your palm activate it. Sadly, this is tough to test since we’ve never had a flasher-telepath in the Black Swan.”

“Great, yay, now I understand how to use it even more! But I think the real thing that needs reviewing is the plan.”

“Yes, of course.” Tiergan and some of the other council members explained the plan to me once again, and I let out a breath.

      “I think I’m ready.” I said.

“And just in time,” said Tiergan. “The sun has almost set.”

      “Good luck Jolie,” said Ivvy.

“I’ll need it.” I said. I don’t know what is going to happen when I follow the light.

The light tunnel from the crystal the rebel-rebels gave me felt weird somehow. It was a standard crystal, yet it wasn’t. I think it was the flasher part of me that detected something different.

When the tunnel finally ended, I stood in a lush grove, with looming trees. Behind me was an entrance to a cave, and prairies stretched around me in all directions for miles. “Hello!” I called.

I took out the short note from my heavy cape.

Come tonight in the moonlight or miss out on your gift. Follow the light and walk through the rift. Leave your tracks clean, because the stealthy are never-seen.

“Well, I followed the light and everything. Next I need to… walk through the rift. A rift? What rift?” The grove I was standing in was crack-free. I detected some movement nearby, and conjured a pencil (curse my violent-free head). “Who's out there?" I said, trying to be intimidating. I sighed. "I think I’m going crazy.” I sensed some change... something related to light. I took the leaping crystal that brought me here out. It lit up. "Maybe it was the moonlight." I said to myself.

Where was that rift? I started walking away from the grove, holding the crystal in front of me. Rift… rift… nothing looked like a crack at all. Not even in the dirt.

I turned around and started walking in the other direction, towards the cave. My feet sploshed in the dense mud and I waved my arms in front of me to dodge the mosquitoes. Eventually, I wandered into the cave.

“Hello!” I shouted. This echo sounds kind of familiar. I followed the path in the cave a little further. “Hello!” I shouted again.

The cave gave me goosebumps. There was only one trail, and it was long. After a while, I approached a wall in the cave. “There’s nothing here.” I thought to myself. The cave was getting darker than it already was. “Well, this mission was a bust,” I said, leaning against the wall. Or what I thought was the wall.

I fell through the rough stone illusion and ended up in a clearing.

      I found the rift.

I found the rift, so… now what? I took out the note once again

Come tonight in the moonlight or miss out on your gift. Follow the light and walk through the rift. Leave your tracks clean, because the stealthy are never-seen.

My hand brushed another paper in my pocket.

Oh powerful one, you've been chosen. Follow the given path to find what you have won. Come to us to be at the top. The odds are never-seen.”

      I’d forgotten about this note.

Both of them are about finding the rebel-rebels… but both of them talk about different things.

Tonight in the moonlight… follow the given path… follow the light… the rift…. what you have won… leave your tracks clean…

It all suddenly fell in place. The two notes were like puzzle pieces. I just had to take apart the instructions and put them together the right way! I took out a spare piece of paper and a pen (I always have one) and wrote down what I put together.

Tonight in the moonlight… done. Follow the given path…” That must’ve been the cave. “Done. The rift… Done.” Now, follow the light? The crystal!

I took it out. Not only it was glowing brighter, but something about this room changed its color to silver. I’ve never seen a silver crystal. I held it up to the sliver of light in the clearing, but nothing happened.

What is left? What you have won… come to us… the top…  Of course! Leave your tracks clean because the stealthy are never seen.

I held the glowing crystal in front of me and used a nearby stick to make sure my tracks in the dirt were covered up. There weren’t many, since only this room had the dirt. Finally, I held the crystal up to the light and ended up sprawled in a huge room.

“Well, well. Look who finally took the hint.” said a cloaked figure. I rose up, rubbing my head. I fixed my hair and slowly turned in a circle, taking everything in. There was a lot of unfamiliar machinery in the room, and this room seemed somewhat earthy.

“Looks like it was a bumpy journey.” said another figure, snickering. His voice sounded sorta familiar… One of the figures offered me a chair which I sat down in. I rubbed my eyes, and finally I could see everyone properly. They all wore heavy cloaks and tunics, with an eye on their sleeve. I shook my head, and my thoughts turned normal.

“So, you wanted me to come here. What do you want me to do now?” I asked.

“Well, she’s straightforward.” said a voice. This cloaked person seemed to be the leader of the troop. Her hands were adorned with bracelets. Everyone else seemed to be plain. “That’s a good quality to have.” she turned towards me. “Well, Jolie. We’ve been hearing many things about you recently. Almost faded away during a light leap, eh?”

I didn’t nod or move or say anything. This person radiated evil.

“I expected this. All of them did the exact same thing,” she said, gesturing around to the cloaked figures watching me. “And lookee lookee, they’re here, with me. And I want you here too.” she started pacing the floor. “A little birdy told me that our prediction came out right, and you are powerful. Well, we want that power.” she turned, facing me again. “Come, join us Jolie. Come, be at the top. Join us, the rebels. This is your prize.”

I couldn’t do anything but play dumb. “What? I’m powerful? I’m just a conjurer and you guys probably know that.” I said, trying to look innocent. I hid behind my fashionably styled hair. It was hard because everything was pinned up top.

“Silly girl. We know everything.” the cloaked lady said, facing me. “You can join us if you want to. If a word goes out about this to anyone,” she made a slicing motion on her head. Geez. Salty.

“Now, take out your crystal and go home. You will know when to make your decision.” she said. “Remember, the society owes you for everything it’s done to you and Brant. Show them that you aren’t powerless. Show them.”

I stepped into the light of my Pathfinder as the people in the room snickered for some reason. The room with the masked people disappeared.

“Jolie! You’re back! And you’re safe. That’s a big relief.” said Tiergan. “How was it?”

“Easy. I got all the footage and sound we needed.”

“Jolie, good job today. We got tons of footage of the Neverseen’s hideout. You can go home now. It’s been a long day for you.”

“Okay,” I said, about to pull my crystal out.

“Jolie.” said Master Leto. I turned around. He looked rather frazzled. “Jolie, today you encountered the Neverseen and went directly into their hiding places. They asked you to join them.”

“I know,” I said. “It wasn’t really that dangerous.”

“Not for now. It’s the Black Swan’s job to pay attention to the future, and in the future, it will get more dangerous.”

“Okay, then I’ll be more careful.” I said. It can’t possibly be that bad, can it?

“Of course you will. What we’re concerned about is your parents. You can’t possibly keep telling them that you are being mentored. What if you leave one day for a mission, and come back a couple weeks later? What would you explain to them about school? All I’m trying to get on here, is that maybe your parents should know.”

I turned around, facing Ivvy, “Do your parents know?” I asked.

She scoffed. “Do they? They’re part of the black swan too.”

I turned back to Leto. “Okay, okay. I’ll think about it.” I pulled out my crystal, and leaped to Havenfield.

“What are you doing out so late?” asked Dad.

“I already told you, I had to bottle moonlight for the Universe, and then mix it with starlight to make an eternal crystal. I didn’t get it, so Sir Werren said that he would mentor me at school.”

“Okay, whatever you say, Jolie,” Dad rolled his eyes and gestured back to the house, “There is some cold Mellowgrass Soup waiting for you. Your punishment.” I groaned. Usually when my parents cook mellowgrass, they make an alternative for me. When they don’t… usually I did something to make them mad.

I opened the back door and walked slowly into the kitchen. Maybe if Mom isn’t here, I can take the soup to Verdi and feed her.

“Jolie?” It was mom. “Jolie! Come right here! You said it would be short, and it lasted a couple hours? If you need help with your subjects, you could come to us, you know? We did everything you did. Now come here, and eat your soup.” I turned to the soup. My enemy.

I sat in the chair in front of the bright green, watery soup, and prodded it with my spoon. It’s actually been so long since I’ve gotten in trouble, that I don’t remember how it tastes.

I scooped a drop of the soup up in my mouth and begrudgingly put it in my mouth.

“At that rate, you’re never going to finish.” said my mom, peering at me from the living room. I groaned and took larger spoonfuls. The soup tasted kind of savory… and sweet. It tasted… good. I slowly ate it faster and faster. Finally, the bowl was empty.

“Wow, Jolie. That was fast… did you like it?” asked Mom.

      “Yes!” I said, gleaming.

“Well, I guess we don’t have any punishments for you anymore.” said Dad, chuckling. “Now, go up to bed. Did you forget what tomorrow was?” Seeing my puzzled look, he said, “I see you have. You get to pick your dorm in the silver tower.” I totally forgot!

“I guess I have to wake up early tomorrow, and...”

“And it’s late. It’s best you sleep now.” said Dad. I put the bowl in our washer, and I headed upstairs. There’s no time for another shower. I collapsed on my warm, comfy, bed. Wait - no, that was my imagination.

I collapsed on a pile of letters addressed from Brant.

      Uh oh.

    • Ch. 29

I slowly got up, examining the pile. It seems like he sent at least three letters each day because I didn’t reply to him the first day. I gathered the letters in my arms and snuggled in between my pillows.

“Jolie! I hope you’re sleeping!” yelled Dad from downstairs.

“Uh, yeah I-” I covered my mouth. Shoot. Now he knows I’m awake. I heard his chuckle. I ducked under my covers just as he walked through the door.

“Jolie, you need to sleep.” he said. Dad switched off the chandelier lights. I closed my eyes, but as soon as he left, I opened them. I plucked out the first letter that Brant sent, and lit my finger just enough to read under my blankets.

Dear Jolie, I hope you listened to me. I know you will. I hope you didn’t join one of those rebel groups. I don’t want you to get hurt. Because…

You're the spark, the kindling, the flame that never dies. The beauty and the wonder of the ever-burning skies.

      You’re mine.

There are baby gremlins in the sanctuary! Hope you can drop by for a visit - and it’s my turn with Sid. How about you conjure him over here?I?

      Love, Brant.

I clutched the letter. This one was the best yet. His faith in me surprises me over and over again. How am I ever going to survive the rest of the year without him?

I placed the letter at my bedside table, and took the next letter.

Jolie? PLEASE RESPOND. You didn’t join it did you? Why aren’t you responding? You must’ve gotten hurt. JOLIE! Tell me what happened.

I was just with Elwin, laying in a bed, and I didn’t even think of Brant. I’m such a bad fiance. The next few letters were all like this one, but what hit me the hardest was the last one.

Jolie. I just don’t want you to get hurt. Please reply. It’s hard enough not being able to talk face-to-face. Don’t make it harder for me.

I need to reply back now.

Dear Brant, I’m fine. I was just in Elwin’s for a minor light-leaping injury. I’m okay now, so don’t ask more questions. Can we meet soon?

      Love, Jolie

What else is there to say? I conjured the letter to the vision of Brant's desk, which wasn't so clear anymore.

I pushed all the letters into the half-filled chest full of sappy notes that started in level 4. I sighed and leaped into my bed, where my thoughts wandered to the past before me and Brant went public.

I had just turned fifteen. My parents hosted a huge gala that evening and called all the people we knew to it. My friends arrived first. “Jolie!” squealed Ivvy. She was wearing a shimmery green gown that complimented her eyes perfectly..

“You look beautiful!” she said. I was wearing a red gown that day with diamonds..

“Thanks, but not compared to you!” I replied. Sometime later, Brant showed up. He hadn’t given me the crush cuffs at this point yet. The present he gave me for this birthday was the most unforgettable thing ever.

“Jolie, I’m giving you this locket so you can see the most important thing in the world to me.” I opened the dainty box, and saw a necklace spiraled with blue metal. The locket was beautiful. It had my name engraved in blue, along with dainty yellow carvings. I opened it, and my face reflected back on me. I'm the most important thing to him?

“It’s beautiful.” I said, hugging him. And so it all started.

      1. Prentice isn´t supposed to be caught yet

      2. Most of the incidents that happened like Cyrah fading isn´t supposed to have happened

      3. I am pretty sure Stewart should be an adult

      4. I don´t think some of the collective has joined yet

      5. Sophie hasn´t been born yet

      6. Teirgan isn´t in the council

Sorry for the corrections but it was kind of bothering me

Yeah, I noticed some of these things after I wrote them too. I will correct them, but I'll do it on the original copy. I noticed all these errors after I wrote too.

      1. I think I understand where you're coming from for that, because Jolie was supposed to meet Prentice. I don't want to give the story away, so I'll just say yes, they will meet at some point.

      2. I realized this later on too, but assuming that fourteen years later, Wylie is a level seven or eight, and sophie is around 13, I think it works out ok. (I will correct the mission scene with Jolie and Ivvy)

      3. Sewart is a level nine along with Jolie - he has no ties with KotLC books, he was created by me

      4. The collective has been made, but it isn't so organized, as you can tell. It only consists of a couple people.

      5. Yes, Sophie hasn't been born yet. I will correct that... later. XD

      6. I think I mentioned in the story later on maybe how he wasn't in the council because he was taking care of Wylie.

No problem for the corrections! Thanks for bringing these out... I'll try to correct them some time.

Also, some of my answers on here ^^^ are vague, I didn't want to give the story away...

    • Ch. 30 mini special!

'It's the thirtieth chapter'! This time I took a break from the normal story, and switched gears to another point of view... This takes place around Chapters 18-28 of Double Agent. Don't worry - the real 30th chapter will be coming too!

“Brant! Come have breakfast!” yelled Mom through the UltraSound.

I picked up my mini UltraSound and shouted back, “One Minute!” However old I am, my mom still treats me like a five year old.

I finished the letter I was working on, and folded it up. I loaded it into the gadget my cousin made for me and said, “Jolie’s bedroom.” I heard the familiar hum of the gears as the machine lit up. The note faded away, and the machine was empty.

      “Brant!” yelled my mom.

“Coming! I shouted. I picked up my backpack and stuffed all of my equipment into it. Then, I ran down the stairs and grabbed the cloudberry sandwich.

“I made your favorite, hon.” said Mom.

“Thanks! It’s delicious!” I replied, my mouth full of the juicy, airy, mouthwatering goodness. “Did you make custard bursts like I asked?” Mom nodded and pulled out a dainty box filled with them. They wouldn’t be as good as Edaline’s, but I told mom to put a twist on it… I hope Jolie likes it. I finally took out my special leaping crystal, designed to break through barriers to end up in the sanctuary. I ended up knee deep in swizzlespice.

Taking out my Imparter, I requested Sir Hennings. “Sir,” I said. “I finished all my work for today, am I allowed to go now?” Sir Hennings appreciated politeness more than anything.

“What a polite gentleman. Yes, you may go,” he said. I was just about to click the button on the side of the imparter, when I heard Hemmings say, “Wait! Brant, did you feed Greyfell the pile of swizzlespice? And leave some more in his feeding area for the night?” Did I? That was the first thing I landed in.

      “Most definitely,” I said.

My mind wandered back to the moment I landed in the Alicorn food.

“You kidding me?” I shouted out loud.

“Neigh!!!!!” I heard Greyfell reply. I chuckled to myself and picked up some swizzlespice. I tossed it in the air like I had a million times before. Greyfell jumped in the air and caught the swizzlespice in his mouth. He flipped in the air, showing off, and landed in front of me.

“Neigh!” He whinnied. I patted his soft, silver mane, and he nuzzled against my arm. He really did trust me. I mean, I have been taking care of him for two years now. Only if another alicorn could be found, and the timeline to extinction could be reset. It would be wonderful to see baby alicorns even more energetic than Greyfell playing around.

“You can go.” said Sir Hennings. I smiled and switched off my imparter. I gathered my gear and teleported to Havenfield to give Jolie the custardbursts. The sky was dark and starry. Undoubtedly on a night like this, Jolie would be out and about in the fields. But when I approached the house, something felt off.

I knocked the door once, then twice. “Jolie!” I shouted. “Grady? Edaline? Where are you guys!?!” They were… gone?
