  • Sophie’s hand cramped as she tried one last time to reach Keefe. “Please? Keefe, we need you.” She took a deep breath. “I need you.” She sighed and stood up. Bad idea. She immediately slumped back down to her seat, calling for Elwin. “You don’t look so good…” Elwin was carrying a tray of vials for Keefe. “I haven’t slept in a week, how do you think I would look?” Sophie snapped, letting her anger get the best of her. Elwin started to leave the room but Sophie needed something first, “Elwin?” “Yes?” He seemed nervous, like she was going to lash out again. “Can I…” she gulped, “Can I have a sedative?” Ro sniffled teasingly, “Our girl’s losing her touch!” Elwin was startled and looked upon her in concern, “Yeah Sophie, just give me a sec.” Sophie let the cool liquid slip down her scratchy throat and one last tear fell from her scrunched eyelids as the world rushed away, leaving her in darkness. Sophie had had all sorts of nightmares before but this one was different. Cold shivers rushed down her spin as the circular room spun. Everyone she loved was behind a different door, and she could only take one key. Below her, the monster had melted and was seeping up her foot and into her legs. The darkness spread and spread up her hips, her chest, finally settling in her heart. The monster seemed to be pulling the strings, making her angry. Sad. Scared. Angry. Mad. Terrified. Lost. The doors ran away from her, just out of her reach. She heard everyone’s screams, calling for her help. Grady yelled for her. Amy screamed at her. Gisela laughed at her from somewhere unknown, speaking words that Sophie was sure would haunt her forever. “Just go Sophie. You can never be good enough. Do the right thing and give up. Don’t pretend you’re a hero. You can never be the moonlark they need. Go home before you mess things up even more.” She laughed and laughed and the monster grew and grew until Sophie was shaking. The monster started to drown her in the hatred and fear. Sophie was taking her last breath when… A cool breeze fluttered through her mind, drawing her back to consciousness. It wanted her to come back. But in the darkness, Sophie didn’t have to deal with the Neverseen, or *** or parents, regents, or Gisela, or boys. Boys. Keefe? The breeze called for her, beckoning her to the light. She was almost there when the monster grabbed at her, dragging her down. But the wind was strong. It curled around Sophie, cradling her like a barrier, laughing at the pathetic attempts the darkness made to get to her. She was okay. She was safe. For now. Her heavy eyelids slowly opened, and an icey blue hit her unadjusted eyes. The ice melted into a face, one that she knew. The face had striking eyes. Eyes she was worried she would never see again. “Keefe?” She croaked, blinking at the intense light. “Yeah Foster.” She pulled him in for a hug, feeling the hot tears warm her freezing face. “Someone missed me!” Sophie couldn’t decide if she wanted to hug, yell, or punch Keefe so she just asked, “Are you okay?” “Yeah, I mean I think so…” Keefe’s normal humor seemed to be lost and he obviously noticed, making an effort to joke. “Guess they should name this the Foster-Keefe Center. I think you’re rubbing off on me.” Ro chuckled in the corner, stepping into the light. “Now, about those punishments Lord Hunkyhair.” “I just woke up, give me a break!” Keefe protested. The sitting up must have been too much because he clutched his stomach and sat back down. Elwin came rushing in with bottles of elixirs, “Actually he’s right! You need all the rest you can get. Both of you.” He added when he saw Sophie’s disheveled hair and flushed cheeks. “No!” Sophie whined. “Please, there’s a lot we need to talk about.” “Fine, but don’t exert yourself.” He scoffed. “Who am I kidding? I’m talking to Sophie Foster!” He shuffled out of the room, leaving Sophie and Keefe alone. Well… almost alone. “Well if you’re up for romantic snuggle time, you’re up for some lecturing!” Ro yelled, reminding them of her presence. Sophie tried to hide her blush but she was pretty sure Keefe was as red as her. Ro started walking towards Keefe with a suspicious container in her hand but apparently stopped. Her eyes darted around, panic swelling in the center. “Ro…” Sophie questioned. “What’s wrong?” “I- can’t - move.” She huffed out, obviously struggling. “What?” Keefe screeched, pain in his voice. “Just. Move.” Ro seemed released from her prison and stumbled from the balance change. “What in the world?” Ro screeched, terror infecting her usually snarky voice. Sophie recognized something about the whole event, she just couldn’t put her finger on it. “I’m sorry.” Keefe said, his words as surprisingly bland as his tone. Ro turned to him with an accusation, “You did that?” “I don’t know!” Keefe retorted. “How could you not know!” As their argument spireled, so did Sophie’s thought. This reminded her of something if only she could remember what. “I just stopped walking AGAINST MY WILL and you don’t know?” Ro snarled, her hand instinctively flying to her blade. “Guys.” Sophie peeped. “It’s not my fault! I don’t think…” Keefe had lost his usual charm and was left with confusion as he jumped up from the bed. “Guys!” “Well it’s not MY fault. I suggest you come up with some answers real quick Lord Chunkyhair.” “GUYS!” “What?” Ro and Keefe impatiently tapped their foots in sync. Sophie’s screams seemed to have finally reached their thickheads. “I think I know what’s happening.” “Well?” They both waited. “We need to talk to Grady.”

    • This chapters a little short so I'll try to post more soon! Sorry for the delay too, I've been pretty busy and stressed. Here you go:

“So let me get this straight.” Grady rubbed his temples and his nose scrunched. “You think that Keefe if a Mesmer?

Keefe fidgeted, at a surprising loss for words.

“I mean… what else would’ve made Ro stop so suddenly?” Sophie hoped there was an explanation. She knew first hand how powerful the ability was and how dangerous.

So if Gisela wanted Keefe to have it…

“Looks like Mummy Dearest has some interesting plans for me…” Keefe chuckled but the laughter didn’t quite reach his eyes.

Sophie put a hand on Keefe’s shoulder and looked him in the eye, “It’s going to be okay.”

“I know Foster.” Keefe grinned. “I gotta keep the streak of me disappointing my parents going!”

“This isn’t something to joke about!” Grady yelled, slamming his fist on the table. “If what you’re suggesting is true… I can’t even imagine the possibilities of what your mother could want.”

“Relax, we don’t even know if it’s true.” Keefe scoffed, running a hand through his hair.

“Well… there’s only one way to find out!” Keefe stumbled back by Grady’s comment.

“You can’t expect me to…” When Grady nodded, Keefe asked, “How would I test it on anyway?”

“Me.” Sophie stepped forward. “No, I don’t want to hear it, you can’t always protect me. Try it Keefe.”

Grady sighed and stepped back. “I mean… it won’t hurt her.”

Keefe still looked terrified as he closed his eyes. “How am I supposed to do this?”

“Just picture whatever you want Sophie to do. If you’re a Mesmer, she’ll do it.” Grady seemed just as nervous as Sophie as he gripped her hand tightly.

Sophie counted 548 seconds until she felt something. It was like a warm trickle spreading up her back. It seemed to tighten around her and tug her away. Another stroke of heat dripped down her legs, pushing them forward. Suddenly her entire body was covered in this hot slime, making her sit. Then lie down. She tried to stand back up but the warmth was so heavy. It was pressing down. She gulped for air, the force pushing her chest into the ground.

“Keefe… stop it. Let her go.” Grady warned, approaching Keefe.

HIs eyes popped open and when he saw Sophie lying on the ground, unmoving, he started panicking.

“Is she okay? What did I do?” His eyes teared up as he stared at his hands in horror.

Sophie wanted to get up and hug him but the strange warmth was still chaining her to the floor. Her lips twitched as she tried to speak.

“Keefe. Let her go. Now.” Grady’s eyes flared up as he firmly gripped Keefe’s shoulder.

“I- I don’t know how!” He shuddered and started shaking.

The warmth started creeping into Sophie’s mind, her conscious shutting down. She tried in a frenzy to escape. She had one last idea. Keefe? She transmitted. Please let me go. Please.

Keefe’s eyes darted around and he scrunched his nose tight. Sophie felt the warmth being called back, leaving her body.

She picked herself back up but she was exhausted.

Grady seemed disappointed. “Well… that solves that.”

Keefe started backing up and when Sophie reached out to him, he jumped. “Please… don’t come near me. I’m dangerous.” His voice cracked and he pulled out a crystal.

Right before he lept away, Sophie could see the terror in his eyes. Jokes couldn’t save him this time.

    • Sophie shuffled around the house, trying to distract herself. Normally she would just leap, teleport, or transmit to Keefe, but Grady had told her that when he manifested, he needed some alone time too. Meanwhile, Sophie had to meet with Team Valliant to discuss what she and Oralie had learned through the caches.

Sophie stepped out into the pastures and was greeted by a warm hug from Wynn and Luna. Hi guys. She transmitted, Calm…

Play play play play! They bounced around.

Sorry guys, not right now. She could see their disappointment as they ran away. She had more important things to worry about. She had been ignoring the cache for Keefe but she couldn’t procrastinate any longer.

Dex tapped her on the shoulder, drawing her out of her trance. They gave each other a huge hug. It was so nice how things had changed between them. Just a couple years ago they had kissed, and well… it was as awkward as you would imagine.

They were both glad that they could get make to being friends, best friends.

Dex pulled away and stared into her eyes. “How are you?”

      “I’m… fine.” She shrugged.

“No…” Dex chuckled. “How are you?”

Sophie laughed at how well he knew her. “I’m holding up.”

“Impossible!” Sophie and Dex started laughing until Stina showed up.

“Oh, I’m glad to see you guys are fooling around while the Neverseen are working on taking down the entire Elvin world.” Stina rolled her eyes but Sophie could tell that she was becoming nicer to the rest of the team.

“I’m sure they’re working harder than you.” Biana appeared, having vanished, behind Sophie, wrapping her in a hug.

It was all casual until Sophie remembered what happened with Fitz. This was the first time she was seeing Biana since all of that. Sophie tensed up and Biana seemed to notice.

“Sophie, it’s fine. We’re good!” Biana smiled but Sophie couldn’t believe that, just like that, they were fine.

“I feel like I’m missing something…” Wylie rubbed Wynn’s ears, laughing at the hyper Alicorn.

“We’re… fine.” Sophie caught Dex’s confused glance and quickly transmitted I tell you later.

After a quick nod, Sophie decided to fill them in on the recent events. She talked about their discovery about Keefe’s ability and how she hadn’t contacted him since. After a gulp, she started explaining the cache.

“So…” Sophie started. “The cache did have to do with Stellarlunes.”

“Okay… so what did you find?” Stina impatiently tapped her foot.

Sophie took a deep breath. “Stellarlunes are a combination of shadowflux and quintessence. When combined with etherine… it can destroy a Prime Source.”

Everyone was stunned. They all seemed speechless but Dex came to his senses first. “Why would they use it on Keefe then.”

“I don’t know.” Sophie’s eyes teared up as she realized she hadn’t even checked in on Keefe to make sure that that wasn’t affecting him.

“Do the Councillors know? Or better yet, does Keefe know?” Stina asked.

“Oralie’s telling the Councillors today but… I haven’t told Keefe yet.

No one really knew what to say yet so they just stood there in silence.

“What about Glimmer? Does she know anything about this?” Biana suggested.

Sophie frowned. “That would be a good idea but…”

      “But…” Wylie prompted.

“I just don’t trust her very much.” Sophie was nervous but when she saw the others nod, she relaxed. “I mean, what if she only helped us so she could spy for the Neverseen?”

Biana coughed. “Sounds exactly like what Keefe did.”

“So what do we do?” Stina asked the question they were all thinking.

“I think… we wait for the Councillors.” After the groups protests, Sophie continued. “They can look into it more!”

“Fine.” Dex seemed disappointed but smirked and added. “Lady Fos-boss.”

Sophie sighed and said goodbyes but Dex lingered behind. “What’s up?” Dex raised an eyebrow.

“Oh…” Sophie explained everything with Fitz and hoped Dex could look past his issues with the Vacker family wouldn’t interfere with his opinion.

“So you know who your biological mom is?” Sophie almost slapped herself for forgetting to tell the group to stop the interviews.

      “Yeah but I-” Sophie confirmed.

“I know, you can’t tell me.” Dex scratched his head, and wrapped Sophie up in a hug.

“Thank you.” A tear slid from Sophie’s cheek as she leaned into Dex’s shoulder.

“So… do you still like him or do you like…” Dex trailed off, unsure if Sophie was ready to talk.

“I don’t know… at this point, I just want to focus on-” A scream interrupted her comment and it took her a minute to realize it was a transmission and not out loud.

Fitz’s panicked voice filled her head. Sophie. A long silence. HELP.

    • Here you guys go!!! I'm sorry that it's moving a little fast, I know I'll never finish or I'll forget my ideas if I don't just plug them all in. Anyway... here it is:

Sophie winced at the screams and yelled/explained what she heard to Dex.

“Let’s get to the cliff!” Dex started running, grabbing her hand.

Sophie bit her lip. “There… might be another way.”

“Then let’s go!” Sophie was surprised by how much Dex cared about Fitz until she realized… he didn’t.

Dex knew that she couldn’t handle losing Fitz. Sophie wanted to wrap him up in a hug (then proceed to put him in a bubble so he couldn’t get hurt) but, they had something to do.

“Here” Sophie tightened her grip on Dex’s clammy hand and started sprinting.

She channeled all of her energy into her feet, pumping her legs and charging forward. Dex struggled to keep up so she tried wrapping her energy around him. She imagined a forcefield covering his feet and rushing along the ground along with hers. When he sped up, she did too. Suddenly, she could she they were flipping through the void.

She felt herself flickering in and out, and turned to look at Dex. He looked… terrified. At first she thought he was scared of her ability… until she looked ahead. The cliff was quickly approaching so Sophie focused all of her energy and up ahead, a gap appeared.

This one was stronger than the rest, only flickering slightly. When they approached it, Sohpie thrust herself through and pictured Everglen’s glowing golden gate.

Sophie managed to stick a landing as Dex went tumbling to the floor.

“When… did… that… happen?” Dex panted, brushing the mud off of his black tunic.

“When I was running with Keefe.” Sophie realized that this was the first time she had teleported that way. Before it had only been the flickering gaps.

After a quick glance, the duo raced through the doors and up the stairs to Fitz’s room. When they didn’t hear anything, Sophie worried that he wasn’t at Everglen. She had forgotten to check.

She barged into the room and almost cried in relief when she saw Keefe standing in the corner. She wasn’t too late. Then she saw that Keefe’s eyes were scrunched closed almost like…

“Keefe! Let go!” She shook him as hard as she could. “Keefe. Please.”

Her voice cracked as she looked at Fitz. His face was purple but parts of it were paleing. His eyes looked at Keefe in horror as he choked out.

“He- stop.” Fitz’s eyes rolled back and Sophie’s worry intensified.

Dex walked up to Keefe and shook his shoulders, trying to snap him out of his daze. Suddenly Dex’s face started purpuling as he walked over to join Fitz by the window.

No, no, no. This can’t be happening. Sophie thought, gathering her energy to prepare for a transmit.

She had never been in Grady’s mind while he was using his talent so she had no idea what it was supposed to look like.

Keefe’s mind seemed to be split into three parts. She could see Dex and Fitz’s thoughts as well as Keefe’s, making it difficult to determine whose was whos. She was sinking into the web of thoughts until she heard a soft; Sophie?

The misty thoughts cleared away, fleeing. Keefe! Sophie almost screamed.

      What happened? She asked.

I… don’t know. We were arguing and then I slipped into a trance. I didn’t know what was happening I just-

His voice faded out and Sophie opened her eyes, stretching her arms out around him and brushing a tear from his cheek. Another one appeared and he rested his head on Sophie’s shoulder.

Sophie grabbed his shoulders and held him at a distance. “It’ll be okay.” He nodded.

She turned to face Dex and Fitz, wrapping them both up in giant hugs too. “Are you guys okay?”

Fitz was clasping his throat and his voice came out raspy. “I’ll be fine.” He snapped, glaring at Keefe. His eyes turned kind when he looked at Sophie though.

“So what exactly happened again?” Sophie shook her head, crossing her arms.

“Keefe and I were uh…” Fitz’s eyes seemed to want to look anywhere except Sophie as he continued. “We were… arguing. And then this warm breeze spread up my back into my throat and I… I couldn’t breath.”

“What were you arguing about?” Sophie asked, hoping they would actually tell her.

When both boys flushed red, Ro chuckled and said, “There you go again. Our shining star, Miss Oblivious!”

Only this time, she couldn’t just shrug it off. Whatever it was had put Fitz in danger! She racked her brain for the other instances Ro had called her “Miss Oblivious”.

Sophie’s cheeks grew hot and Ro chuckled, “She finally figured it out!”

    • Here's Chapter 5. Again, I'm sorry about how rushed this seems, I just know that I won't be able to finish it if I don't get through the plot quickly. Here ya go and I hope you enjoy!

Keefe reached to put a hand on Sophie’s shoulder put she slapped it away.

“No!” She snapped. “You are not allowed to comfort me.”

Fitz straightened and a small grin appeared on his face.

“I’m not taking your side either!” Keefe and Fitz awkwardly buried their heads. “I told you I wasn’t ready for that so why…”

Sophie’s eyes teared up as she transmitted to Dex, ignoring the rules of telepathy.

“Could you fill them in? I just can’t…”

Dex nodded, glaring daggers as Fitz and Keefe. Sophie pulled out her home crystal, shaking her head as the light swept her away.

The green pastures of Havenfield had never felt so big as Sophie ran across them. She darted up the stairs and slammed the door to her room.

Edaline came rushing in with a look of concern on her face. “Sophie… are you okay?”

Sophie stared up at Edaline, weeping even more at seeing her mom’s worry.

“Oh baby…” Edaline sat down on Sophie’s bed, stroking her hair. “What happened?”

“Keef-f-fe and F-f-fitz we-ere-” Sophie sobbed, covering her face in her hands.

“Honey…” Edaline wrapped her arms around Sophie.

Sophie shrugged her off. “You… knew?”

Edaline eyes watered as she forced a nod.

The last of Sophie’s tears vanished, replaced by anger and frustration.

“I’m so sorry…” Edaline hands were fidgeting, as she flushed red.

“No…” Sophie stood up. “I’m so tired of everyone knowing everything before me.”

“That’s not true!” Edaline stood with her, trying to hug her again.

“Forkle knows who my dad and mom are. Everyone knew I would be unmatchable, and know this? Did I not deserve to know?”

Sophie ran out the door, rushing to the pastures. She was instantly flooded with choruses of “fly, fly, fly?”

Sophie agreed and hopped on Silveny’s back.

“Where where where?” Silveny bombarded, flapping her wings.

Sophie couldn’t exactly put her thoughts into words but Silveny seemed to understand the feeling.

She dive bombed, racing towards the ground. A crack of lightning struck through the air, opening a gap into the void. As they raced through, Greyfall, Luna, and Wynn followed close behind.

A warm mist filled the air, delightfully prickling at Sophie’s hands. A breeze fluttered at Sophie’s neck, sending a chill down her spine. Butterflies danced around her head, creating a whirlwind of color. Sophie sighed, letting the humid air spread through her lungs, refreshing and rejuvenating her energy.

Sophie didn’t know how long she would stay there or how much trouble she would be in for stealing four of the world’s most important and rare creatures. She didn’t even care as she collapsed on the mossy rock beside her, closing her eyes.

When she finally gathered enough courage to pry them open, something felt off.  Silveny and Greyfall took protective stances around her and the twins, guarding them. Sophie stood up and pulled out one of her goblin throwing stars.

Sophie felt arms wrap around her neck, and as she was turning, something metal locked on her head. Instant pain seared all of her coherent thoughts, leaving her utterly useless as she was swept up and the world went dark.

The last thing she thought to do was transmit to Silveny, “Get help!” However where she normally felt her favorite animal’s presence, all she found was a wall of steel, locking her out and in to her very own prison.

    • Hey, I'm back again with chapter 6! Hope you enjoy Keepers!

Blinding lights struck Sophie’s eyes, forcing her back into her dark jail cell. Sophie tried to speak but her throat was raspy and dry.

“Help…” She croaked, tears springing to her scrunched eyes from the effort.

A chuckle rang out, drowning her in fear.

“Who- are- you-” Sophie coughed, peeking her eyes open just long enough to see the thick red fluid drenching her hands.

“Oh…” The voice giggled. “That’s not how it works.”

Sophie built up the courage to keep her eyes open, gagging on the sweet liquid coating her throat. A cloaked figure stood about 10 feet away, leaning against a wall.

“What do you want?” Sophie tried to stand up but her legs went numb, making her collapse on the cold cement floor.

More laughs. Sophie realized that there were more than one person in the room. In fact, people wearing cloaks surrounded the entirety of the wall.

“Poor Moonlark…” A familiar voice rang out. If only she knew who it was…

“Poor Moonlark…” The chorus continued, passing from person to person, infecting Sophie.

They repeated the phrase over and over until Sophie felt it slip out of her own mouth… “Poor… Moonlark…”

“There you go!” A clammy hand patted Sophie’s back. She responded with a flinch.

“Maybe we should move her into the chamber now?” A kinder voice suggested.

“So rushed… can’t we have some fun?” A female complained.

“No… he’s right!” A strong commanding voice spoke up, clinking footsteps stopped at Sophie’s head. “If you guys stuck to the plan… we could’ve been at Havenfield already!”

Sophie’s eyes drooped closed as she felt two… no three, figures pick her up and move her like an object. She lost track of the twists and turns they took and only dared to open her eyes once she heard the door slammed.

Sophie reached out to Fitz, screaming. “FITZ! HELP!!!” Sophie didn’t know she had the mental strength for that strong a transmission but right away, she got a response.

“Is it Keefe?” Fitz angrily questioned.

“NO! Why would…” Sophie remembered the events from earlier. “No… They’ve got me. They’re headed for Havenfield! Get Sandor and tell him what’s happening!”

      “What about you Sophie?”

“I’m… fine. I might have a way out.” Sophie bit her lip. “Just… get. Sandor. Now. Please.” She must have run out of energy because Fitz’s voice dimmed away until Sophie was all alone.

Sophie felt so tired. She knew she needed to get out but… would it be so bad to just close her eyes for a minute? Her mouth was so dry and her head was so heavy and maybe for just a minute she could…

No. She had to get out of there. For Grady and Edaline. For Fitz and Keefe. For Dex and Biana. She. Had. To. Escape.

Sophie picked herself up and started sprinting at the wall. It took a couple times of sprinting, hitting the wall, and trying again to get a gap in the void. Sophie channeled energy into her legs, sprinting as fast as she possibly could. A crack rang through the air and Sophie jumped through the split and… she was free.

Sophie first thought of Havenfield’s green pastures but remembered Silveny, Greyfall, and the babies. She pictured the misty stream and soon she stepped into the stream from the void. She was greeted by a very happy family of alicorns, all of them nuzzling into her blood stained tunic.

“Come on guys… we have to go!” She lifted herself onto Silveny and told her. “Home.”

They raced through the air, plummeting once at an acceptable height. Lightning struck the space in front of them, opening the void as they darted through.

Instead of being comforted by the rolling green hills of Havenfield, Sophie found herself in a thick black smoke.

“No… no, no, no, no, no.” Sophie’s vision cleared so she could see what was happening. Her house was up in flames.

    • Here's Chapter 7!!!!!

Silveny reared back, tossing her head to the sky. Sophie coughed and coughed, choking on the thick air coating her rough throat.

Silveny flapped her wings, cradling Wynn and Luna from the display of orange and red flames. From above, Sophie could see a bulky gray figure trying to fight off the fire.

Sophie screamed, ordering Silveny to dip down and pick her lovable guard up. But they both knew Sophie would never make it. A gap in the void opened and Sophie pleaded.

      Find him. Please. I can- I c- I can’t lose him too.

Silveny hesitated for a second but ended up racing the the void, leaving the sea of fire behind them. They landed outside the gates, finding a load of people waiting there. Familiar faces wafted in and out of Sophie, all of them waiting for something. Someone.

“Sophie!” Keefe yelled, sprinting up to her.

Everyone turned but in that split second, Sophie didn’t care about appearances, or jealous boys, she buried her face in Keefe’s chest, letting him wrap her up and protect her from the hoard of elves.

      Sophie’s voice cracked. “Sand-”

“I know, I know.” Keefe hushed her, stroking her hair. “Let’s sit you down.”

He led her to a bench, far away from everyone else. She rested her head on his shoulder, her tears plastering her hair to her face.

No words could form in Sophie’s mouth so she just sat there, crying and weeping and letting herself break.

“If I hadn’t-” Sophie started to say.

“No… don’t think like that.” Keefe grabbed her chin, forcing her to look at his eyes. “This. Is. Not. Your. Fault. You have to believe me. Say it.”

Sophie stared at his icy blue eyes, making herself say, “It’s not my fault.” If only for his benefit.

A throat cleared and Sophie jumped, praying it wasn’t Fitz. She couldn’t let Keefe lose control of his power again. Instead, Grady stood with his arms folded, a couple of feet away.

Sophie stood up to give him a hug but wilted when she heard a small crunch in her leg. A tear slipped out so Grady took the couple of steps to close the gap between them.

For those next seconds, minutes, Sophie didn’t care about anything else. Havenfield wasn’t her home. Grady and Edaline were her home. Her family.

“Where’s Mom?” Sophie asked, rubbing her eyes.

“She’s going to get Linh to put out the fires.” Grady finally let go of her. “Are you okay?”

Sophie nodded but remembered the pain in her leg. “My leg…”

      “Let’s get you to Elwin.”

Sophie shrugged and stated the obvious problem. “How? The Leap master…”

“The Councillors brought a crystal for anyone who got injured.”

Sophie waited for Grady to return with the crystal, trying to hide from her friends. She didn’t want the worry or pity.

When he arrived, she practically lunged for the crystal, quickley leaping away.

The familiar walls of the healing center swept in and Sophie realized that the pain in her foot was almost gone. This was sure to be a quick check up and then she could see Edaline and give her a big hug.

Instant wailing pierced her ears, and Elwin rushed in. No hugs. No “How are you?”s. Only Elwin sitting her down on the bed. Bullhorn climbed up on the cushiony bed and curled up in her lap, tears slipping down her eyes.

      “Sophie…” Grady felt her forehead.

“I’m fine…” Sophie really did feel fine.

“Well, Bullhorn obviously doesn’t think so.” Elwin snapped and a colorful orb appeared, inspecting her. “Get Flori. And Tam.”

      “What’s wrong?” Sophie’s worry increased. “What’s happening?”

Elwin gave Grady a glance. “Um… your echos have spread… everywhere.”

    • This is chapter 8! Prepare yourselves.

“No. I feel fine. It can’t- how? No.” Sophie rubbed her forehead.

“Calm down… good news is you aren’t screaming or in pain so… no sedatives.” Elwin gave her a half smile but she could see the fear in his eyes.

“But… I really do feel fine. My ankle hurts a bit but… not like echoes.” Sophie inspected herself, trying to find the invisible injury.

“That’s funny… your ankle looks fine.” Elwin sighed and sat down. “You really do try to make my life difficult don’t you.”

      “I’m sorry-”

“It was a joke. I’ll always save you Sophie.”

“SOPHIE!” Keefe came rushing in. Sophie didn’t fail to notice the absence of her last name. “Are you okay?!? I heard you were rushed here and I couldn’t find you and then they were looking for Tam and then I made a stupid joke or something and then they mentioned echoes and then… are you okay?”

“I feel okay…” Sophie winced at the tight hug, pulling away.

“Thank goodness!” Keefe stepped away. “Well… you probably want to be alone.”

He started to walk away but Sophie intervened. “Um… actually… could you stay?”

“Sure Foster.” Keefe sat on the edge of her bed.

“Oh. Hi.” Firz burst into the room, melting when he saw Keefe sitting there. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah I mean… my echoes are kind of… everywhere but… I feel fine.” Sophie looked down, tired of seeing the worry on everyone’s faces.

Grady pushed through the door, followed by Tam and Flori. He abruptly stopped when he saw Keefe and Fitz glaring at each other. He seemed to give Sophie a look that said is everything good?

Sophie nodded and sat up. “Well… maybe you guys should go…”

The boys shrugged and stood up, bumping shoulders on the way out the door. They both muttered goodbyes but Sophie could barely hear them. Or see them for that matter.

They were covered by a faint mist. In fact, everything was.

“Where did everyone go?” Sophie tried to say but her mouth felt numb. Good. She thought. Maybe she shouldn’t talk.

Colors flashed in front of her, forming a picture. It was… her old school? Everything looked so tall and boring. Sophie didn’t remember what she needed to do but… she was at school. She maybe she needed to get to class?

People rushed past Sophie and she covered her ears at the blaring sound of their thoughts. She tried to block them but… she couldn’t. She… she didn’t know how.

She walked towards the senior’s hallway but a tall guy stopped her.

“Woah there freshie… go to class now.”

“But… I’m not a Fre-” Was she a freshman? She had to be?

Sophie turned around and walked through the other hallway. It was then she realized she was carrying her backpack. And inside… a schedule.

“Mrs. Smith?” Sophie hurried down the hallway but everything became misty.

She couldn’t find the door through the fog and suddenly the scene changed again. She was in her room, her human one, surrounded by her favorite stuffed animals and blankets.

When was it? Sophie looked at her calendar and gasped at the day. The day she found out she was an elf. Why was she here? What was happening? What’s an elf?

Sophie shrugged off her ridiculous thoughts of elves, instead remembering her field trip. She grabbed her Ipod and headphones, starting to walk out the door.

She heard a voice through the headphones, barely there. Suddenly, everything around her faded away as the voice grew stronger. It was a boy’s voice. Dex.

She was in her room at Havenfield, Dex holding crush cuffs in front of him. What was he doing? Didn’t those have to be prepared?

At this point, Sophie was about ready to fall over. Dex blushed and she leaned in to kiss him but the world spun again. And again. From fights with the Neverseen to her window sleepovers, Sophie kept seeing mist and memories. Were they memories? What were they? What was she? Who was she?

Sophie was in the middle of breaking up with Fitz when she collapsed. She heard a scream and almost didn’t realize that it was her.

“Sophie? Sophie?” Fitz’s voice melted away, leaving her in the dark.

“Stop. Stop! STOP. STOP!” Sophie screamed and wailed and cried, curling up in a ball.

      Then... everything stopped.

      Silence.

      Darkness.

A faint murmur of voices aroused. They were calling someone. Was it her? They were calling Sophie. Sophie. She… was… Sophie. The darkness retreated, letting her open her eyes. Grady stood over her, shaking her shoulders so hard she felt like she would burst.

“Dad?” Sophie’s voice cracked and everything snapped into place.

She was Sophie. She was created by the Black Swan. The Neverseen were trying to take over the world. Her parents were Grady and Edaline. She was Sophie. She was friends with the Vackers and Keefe and Dex and Tam and Linh and Wylie. She was Sophie. She. Was. Sophie. Sophie.

“Sophie?” Grady held her so tight that she couldn’t breathe.

Mr. Forkle was standing in the corner, a tear slipping down his cheek.

“What- happened?” Sophie shook her head.

“You tell us! You…” Grady gulped. “You died.”

    • Hola Keepers. Rae here with another chapter!!!! Sorry it's been so long, I'm sure you guys know how it gets around the holidays! XD

“WHAT?!!?” Sophie yelped, clutching her heart as if to check if it was still there.

“I mean....” Elwin shifted uncomfortably. “Your heartbeat stopped and you weren’t breathing and…” A tear slid from his puffy eyes. “But you’re okay now… right?” He pointed to Bullhorn who was back to grumbling around the Healing Center, not paying attention to her.

“Well…” Sophie gulped. “Something… strange happened.”

      “Strange how?” Grady inspected her.

“Um…” Sophie went on to explain the weird dreams. How she relieved her memories but how they felt more real than memories. She didn’t know what was going to happen. She watched the look of horror on their faces as she went into detail about the fading and the spinning. Mr. Forkle’s eyes lit up when she explained that towards the end it felt as if she could make it all stop, like she was in control. “So…” She turned to Mr. Forkle to see what he thought.

“This certainly explains a lot.” Mr. Forkle closed his eyes.

“What is that supposed to mean?” Grady snapped, straightening up to his full height.

      “One minute.”

“No! My daughter just died and you know what’s happening and you think I can just wait?!? NO! You tell me what is happening to Sophie right now or I’ll do it for you!”

“Relax… from her description, it sounds like Sophie has a… new ability.” Mr. Forkle pondered for a minute.

“A new ability?” Sophie shook her head.

“I see this needs a lot of explanation but it’s probably better if I show you.”

Sophie nodded and her mind was filled with the stony gray walls of Mr. Forkle’s office. Instead of the world map, there were tables filled with computers. The room was packed with people. Sophie recognized a few such as Mr. Forkle, Calla, and a couple other Black Swan members.

      My creation. Sophie thought.

On one of the computers, she could see an image of what looked like a bunch of cells. Her cells. Everyone seemed panicked as they rushed around, showing Mr. Forkle the image. Since Mr. Forkle didn’t have photographic memory, the image was blurry and the audio was a nightmare. Sophie noticed something about the cells. They looked advanced, almost… older…

An idea popped into Sophie’s head and she quickly opened her eyes.

“I…” Sophie stuttered. “I can travel through time… right?”

“That is my suspicion.” Mr. Forkle sighed. “We thought that it was just an issue with your cells because it went away after a couple of days.”

“The cells looked like they did when I had my echoes.” Sophie realized.

“That’s probably why Elwin mixed them up.” Mr. Forkle rubbed his forehead.

“How do I do it?” Sophie asked, clearing her throat.

“No. It’s dangerous.” Mr. Forkle warned.

“But think about everything that I could change! I could- your brother.” Sophie gasped.

“No. No matter what, this is not something to take lightly. Have you ever heard of the butterfly effect?”

Sophie sighed. “Please… I have to try.”

“I’m sorry Sophie. I wish more than anyone that my brother could…” Mr. Forkle teared up. “But there is one other Warper and let’s just say that things didn’t go so well.”

“Maybe I could meet them and they could teach me how!” Sophie exclaimed.

“Believe me Sophie. Droxy is the wrong kind of teacher.”

“Droxy?” Sophie racked her brain but the name didn’t ring a bell.

“She was… she was my sister.” Mr. Forkle’s sadness turned to anger. “I don’t want any more questions.”

      “But-”

“I said no more questions!” Mr. Forkle curled his hand into a fist. “I’m sorry… I have to go.”

Mr. Forkle rushed out of the room, leaving a very shocked Sophie, Grady, and Elwin. Elwin came to his senses first, checking Sophie’s cells and making sure she was okay.

“Let’s go home.” Grady suddenly came to life.

“Okay.” Sophie knew better than to argue.

Elwin gave her a hug. “Be careful Moonlark.”

Sophie hit her head on the wall for what seemed like the 100th time. It had been a month since Mr. Forkle told her she had a new ability. She had been trying the entire time to activate her time traveling powers but nothing had come of it.

Edaline appeared at the door with some mallowmelt as a peace offering. “Can I come in?” She timidly asked.

“Uh… yeah. Sure.” Sophie moved from the wall, deciding to sit cross-legged on her petal covered floor.

“I already know the answer to this but… I still have to ask.” Edaline placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. “Are you okay?”

Sophie looked out the window, fiddling with a petal in her palm. “What am I supposed to say?”

“I know there’s nothing I can do to cheer you up…” She sighed, grabbing Sophie’s hand. “But your friends are here for you. And they miss you Sophie, they need you. I know that’s a lot of pressure, and a lot of stress. But they don’t only need you to lead them, they need their friend back.”

Sophie moaned in response, turning away.

“I just thought I’d try and warn you.” Edaline gave away a hint of a smile.

“Warn me? What should I be wa-” Sophie was cut off as her door busted open. Nine figures stood in the door frame. About half a second passed before Biana came rushing in, wrapping Sophie in a huge hug.

“I told them that they shouldn’t all come…” Biana awkwardly smiled a Sophie before turning to glare at Fitz. “But someone couldn't wait. Sorry.”

“No, no. It’s fine, I’m just a little… overwhelmed.” Sophie shifted, turning to face everyone. “Hi.”

After a moment of silence, everyone at once bombarded her with questions. It was a room of chatter, with no one being able to hear anyone else, or for that matter, themselves.

“Woah woah woah, everyone, calm down!” Sophie held up her hands, waiting for the quiet to return. “One. At. A. Time.”

Dex stepped forward first. “First things first, I’m sure we’re all wondering, are you alright?”

Sophie fidgeted, showing them a painful smile. “I will be.” Sophie took the time to examine the room, seeing who was there. Everyone was in the middle of her room, near her bed but two people still stood in the doorway, awkwardly leaning on the frame. Keefe and Fitz.

“Did… you hear me?” Biana brought her back from her staring.

“No, sorry… what did you say?”

“I said… what happened?” Biana cleared her throat and she realized that everyone was waiting for her answer.

“Um… okay. One rule to if I explain. No one gets to say ‘I’m sorry.’ Okay?” She waited for them all to nod, as reluctant as it was, them continued.

She started from the beginning, leaving out why she needed to get away and just saying she went flying with Silveny or something. She explained how she could jump through the void by running so she escaped. They all tensed up when she reached the part about the fire, Sophie making their earlier promise extremely difficult. She rushed through that whole part, instead explaining what happened with Mr. Forkle.

“So… yeah.” Sophie sighed, looking at everyone’s surprised faces.

Keefe was the first one to speak up. “Wow. Uh… time travel! The one and only Foster never ceases to amaze us!”

Everyone nodded numbly, still dealing with the shock.

“Sophie I-” Biana started but Sophie cut her off.

“No. I said no ‘sorrys’. No ‘it’s going to be okay’. No ‘we’ll get through this’. We’ve been saying that for years and look where it’s gotten us! Nowhere! We’ve just lost, over and over and… I can’t stand it.” Sophie's volume increased. “They’ve taken everything from and we do nothing about it!”

Everyone quietly shuffled and guilt flooded into to Sophie’s face. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to yell.”

Fitz stepped forward. “No. It’s okay! You, out of everyone, deserve to be able to yell, scream, give up.” Fitz coughed. “But, you, out of everyone, are special because you don’t. You don’t give up, you never lose sight of yourself. We need that person. We need you.”

Everyone agreed, waiting for her response. “I get that it’s just… why me?” No one seemed to have an answer. “Thank you guys for being here… I think this is exactly what I needed.”

Sophie went on to schedule the next Team Valliant meeting, not failing to notice Dex’s smile as she returned to herself. Everyone cleared out except Keefe. For the first time since… since the incident, they were alone.

“Sophie I’m so so sorry…” Keefe took a step towards her then clarified at her glare. “Not for everything that happened, although I am. I’m sorry for everything I’ve done to hurt you. I just… I wasn’t thinking. I’m so so-”

Sophie hugged him and he immediately shut up. “It’s okay… I think. I know everything you have been through and all that’s happening just… try to be careful?”

“I will.” Keefe tried to hide his smirk. “So you forgive me?”

“There’s one thing you have to promise me first.” Sophie hopped from foot to foot.

“Done. What do you need? You need me to dye Iggy’s hair a more interesting color? You need me to slip flesh-eating bacteria into my dad’s food? Done and done.” Keefe grinned, light filling his face, regaining his old, joking self.

“I need you to promise me that you’ll take lessons from Grady. That is… if Gray agrees.” Sophie bit her lip, awaiting his response.

“Anything else, please! I can’t-.” Keefe pouted, his shoulders slumping. “I don’t want anything to do with this ability. My evil, conniving mom wanted it. My dad’s probably proud of it. I can’t tell which is worse.” Keefe chuckled but when he saw Sophie’s glare, he fell seriously. “I’m sorry it’s just... It’s better to laugh then cry I guess. If I make jokes and I’m sarcastic, it almost doesn’t hurt anymore.”

Sophie was surprised by Keefe opening up to her. “Thank you for saying that. I really do think lessons would help though. After what happened to Fitz…” Keefe tensed at the name. “I just don’t want anyone else, including you, to get hurt…” Keefe looked up at her. “Do we have a deal?”

“Of course.” Keefe went for a handshake but Sophie wrapped him in another hug.

“Thank you.” She whispered. “And, on the bright side, Grady might say no.”

Keefe bit back a laugh and smiled sweetly at her. “We good?”

“Yeah, we’re good.” Sophie smiled out of relief, glad she hadn’t made lost a friend.

They stood there looking at each other for a minute but all of a sudden, Sophie collapsed to the ground.

“Are you okay? What… what’s happening?” Keefe gently laid her head on the floor, calling for her bodyguards.

“Finally!” Sophie whispered, then everything when numb.

    • Here ya go:

This time… it was different. Sophie felt more in control, more powerful. She knew she shouldn’t change the past but… she had to do something.

Sophie didn’t really know how this was supposed to work so she just pictured the rushing water. She remembered the sweet breeze and the flowery scent. The more she thought, the more real it felt. Instead of imagining, the prickles she got from the cool wind, she could feel them. After a minute, she decided to open her eyes. There she was.

She saw Silveny and Greyfall dancing around her and she smiled. She did it. Only… when she tried to move, bright orange sparks appeared, looking like a small shield around her. The strain was stinging every inch of Sophie’s body. She concentrated as hard as she could, and she started to slip through the orange tint. All of a sudden, the world around her flickered, dimming and fading to black.

“No, no, no. I was so close!” A flash of orange light brought her back to her room.

Keefe was shaking her, mumbling under his breath. “C’mon Sophie… c’mon.”

Sophie inhaled deeply, rising up to her knees.

“What in the world…” Keefe’s eyes were wide but Sophie could see the wet marks on his cheek from the tears.

“That was warping.” Sophie said. “At least I think it was… I was able to go back in time but when I tried to move, some barrier or something prevented me. I had almost slipped through when-”

“Woah woah woah, slow down.” Keefe shook his head. “That was time travel?”

“Yep.” Sophie had a crazed look in her eyes.

“Um…” Keefe raised his eyebrows. “Cool!” Keefe’s eyes lit up and he questioned her about everything.

“No! If I can’t change anything then what’s the point?” Sophie snapped, pouting.

“Listen, I know that terrible terrible things have happened but maybe we do-”

“NO! I need to change things! I need Mr. Forkle to be alive, I need…” Sophie’s voice cracked and tears came spilling out.

Keefe waited a second before responding. “Okay.”

      “Okay?”

“Okay. If you want to change things, I’ll help.” Keefe stood taller.

“Really? You don’t think it’s a bad idea or whatever…” Sophie questioned.

“I’m not gonna lie. I think it's an awful idea. Like, one of your worst Foster. But I trust you and I’m here for you, no matter what.” Keefe beamed at her.

Only then did Sophie realize how close they were still standing. Their toes were just about touching and she could feel the heat from his body. Her cheeks burned and she was sure she was blushing.

Sophie cleared her throat and back away but not as much as she meant to. They were still standing awfully close to each other. Sophie looked up at Keefe’s ice blue eyes, staring into their abyss.

Suddenly, a knock at the door sent Sophie, jumping away. She gave an apologetic look to Keefe before saying, “Come in!”

Dex walked in. “Hey, with all the drama, I forgot that I was supposed to tell you, we have a meeting with the Council for Team Valliant.” Dex glanced at Keefe. “Sorry.”

“Okay, thanks! When is it?” Sophie bit her lip, noticing Keefe’s deflated posture.

“In an hour Lady Foss Boss.” Dex smiled and left, leaving Keefe cheerful again.

“So… is Lady Foss Boss like an official title? Like, instead of Lady Foster, it would say Lady Foss Boss?” Keefe said Lady Foster so properly, it sent shivers down Sophie’s spine.

“Whatever you want.” Sophie meant to sound playful, but her tone came across as agitated.

“Hey… I’m just joking.” Keefe half smiled.

“I know, I just... There’s so much going on… I wish I could stop time.” Sophie sighed.

“Listen to me.” Keefe grabbed her arms, forcing her to look directly into his eyes. “No matter what happens, we will stay by you. Biana, Dex, Wylie, Tam, Linh… Fitz.”

Sophie couldn’t help but acknowledge the hesitation before her ex-boyfriend’s name.

“Look, I know Fitz and I shouldn’t have fought. It was childish and wrong and I’m so so sorry.” Keefe let go of her wrists. “I don’t know what I was thinking.”

“It’s okay, I-” Suddenly, the door flew open and Fitz walked in.

“Sophie, I’m so so so so really really sorry.” Fitz froze when he saw Keefe standing so close to her.

Sophie shifted away from Keefe, turning to Fitz.

“What’s he doing here?” Fittz glared at Keefe.

“He’s my friend.”  Sophie straightened up.

“Anyway…” Fitz stink eyed Keefe one more time before settling his eyes on Sophie. “The fight was so stupid and it shouldn’t have gotten violent,” Another glare. “But you are worth fighting for.”

“Thanks. I just don’t want to lose either of my friends.”

Fitz smiled. “I understand that. And that’s why I'm willing to give you as much time as you need to make your decision.”

I agree, If Elwin didn't exist Keefe, Fitz ( Although that wouldn't have been that bad tbh) and Sophie would have all died already like 32 times

    • After much wait, I am proud to announce: CHAPTER 12!!!! So so sorry but it's finnaly here! Enjoy!

“My… decision?” Sophie raised her eyebrows.

      “Yeah… who you pick.”

Sophie snorted, thinking he was joking.

“What’s so funny?” Fitz tilted his head.

“Fitz I think we should go.” Keefe grabbed his shoulder, at first soft but when Fitz didn’t move, his grip tightened.

“No, you don’t get to tell me what to do!” Fitz snapped but Keefe remained cool and calm.

      Sophie backed up.

“I don't see what the issue is…: Fitz puffed out his chest. “She clearly has a choice here. Hopefully she’ll make the right one.”

Keefe tried to forcefully push him out and the two started pushing each other back and forth.

Tears sprung to Sophie’s eyes. “Just stop guys. Stop it!”

Neither of them listened until Bo rushed in, taking a defensive stance in front of Sophie. “You two. Out. Now!”

Fitz stared at Sophie for a second before declaring, “Fine.” and then turned and left with Keefe.

Bo looked over Sophie for injuries. When he didn’t find any, he raised his eyebrows at her questioningly as if asking are you okay?

She nodded, sniffing and rubbing at her eyes.

Bo patted her on the shoulder. He looked like he wanted to say something but decided against it, leaving the room but leaving the door cracked open.

Edaline immediately rushed in. “Are you okay?”

      “Yeah… whatever.” Sophie nodded.

“It’s just that I saw Fitz leaving and he looked pretty angry…” Edaline was cut off when Sophie’s tears bubbled over once again.

“Shhh… it’s okay.” Edaline stroked her hair. Sophie laid there on Edaline’s shoulder for what felt like an eternity and for the first time in a while, she slept peacefully.

Sophie woke up to Edaline calling her name. Sophie remembered the meeting and changed. She rushed out of the door, saying a quick good-bye to Edaline and Grady.

She leapt to the meeting place, seeing Stina, Dex, Biana, and Wylie standing there with grim looks on their face.

“Guys… I swear I’m okay. I’m done with the whole pity thing, okay?”

“No… it’s not that.” Biana bit her lip. “We heard what happened.”

Sophie blushed, playing done. “What do you mean?”

“Fitz told me what happened yesterday…” Biana grimace. “I mean… we all knew it would happen at some point but we thought-”

“Hold up… what do you mean you all knew?” Sophie raised her eyebrows.

Biana’s eyes widened. “Well I… I thought you knew.

      Sophie straightened up. “Knew what?”

Dex stepped forward. “Well that… you know. That Keefe and Fitz both liked you.”

“You’re kidding.” Sophie’s mouth gaped open. “I was the last one to know?”

Stina chuckled then apologized. “Sorry, but yeah. It was pretty obvious.” She coughed before adding. “Miss Oblivious.”

“I can’t believe it… no one told me?” Sophie was growing livid.

      Everyone shrugged.

Flashes of red flew in front of Sophie’s face, signaling that she was about to inflict. She tried to calm herself but this time something different happened. Pools of yellow appeared, looking like splotches. It bled through the red, turning it into a deep orange. Suddenly everything froze and Sophie was looking at everyone like they were in a picture.

She lifted up her hands and everyone started moving very very slowly. She lowered her hands and they froze once again. Sophie grinned, glad to have figured something out.

Sophie shot her hands up and everyone went back to a normal pace. They all started talking at once and the noise was so confusing. She tried to resist but it seemed too tempting… she let her hands fall to her side, closing her eyes.

      Absolute silence.

Not a bird. Not a breath. Nothing.

For the first time, Sophie was in absolute peace.

She slowly peeked open her eyes, realizing that she needed to unfreeze everybody.

      Unless…

Sophie had an awful idea. She pictured herself arriving there, her instincts kicking in. Somehow she knew exactly what to do. She waved her right hand to the left and everything started shaking. A small pain grew in her head, threatening her balance and stability.

Flashes of orange flicked around her, surrounding her friends and spinning them round and round. They one by one disappeared and Sophie dropped her hands. The scene started to play out like a movie, Biana arriving there first followed by Dex.

I shouldn’t be seeing this thought Sophie, studying her hands. After a minute of debate, Sophie gave in. She had to know.
