Sophie's POV
"Happy birthday, Foster!" A voice called from behind her. "Grady told us you'd be at Calla's tree."
Sophie turned around to see Keefe, Marella, Biana, and Tam running toward. She was her that the voice who called her was Keefe, who had a smile plastered all over his face.
"Sophie, why didn't you tell us it was your birthday?" Biana fussed.
"Wait, I thought you guys didn't pay attention to birthdays." Sophie pointed out.
Technically elves didn't even count by birthdays. They used ID's, or inception dates, to count age instead. Even then, elves didn't pay much attention to those either. They didn't have to with their indefinite life spans.
"Well, we're doing it now!" Keefe exclaimed. " Ever since you and Fitzy broke up, you've been more gloomier than Bangs Boy's ever been, and THAT'S saying something." He ignored Tam's grunt as he continued. "So, we kind of had Dex try and find out stuff that humans do for fun...and that's when we discovered BIRTHDAYS!! Cake, presents, parties...how could AND it so happens to be the same day your birthday's on. So, we kind of put together a bunch if presents, mallowmelt and voila! You have your own epic Foster birthday bash!"
"Oh, you didn't have to..." Sophie said, trying to sound flattered.
It wasn't as if she wasn't grateful that her friends had taken the time to plan this for her. She just didn't have very fond memories of birthday parties. Sophie never got invited to parties in the human world, and tge ones she'd have herself somehow always seemed to blow up in her face.
Kind of like everything seems to lately...
"Sophie Elizabeth Foster, you will enjoy this party, and not mope around about Ritz Savory Cracker!" Marella threatened,
"Ritz...Savory...Cracker???" Sophie squeaked out before bursting out laughing.
"My gift to you: shame and embarrassment to Fitz for breaking up with you."
"Ritz, Marella." Biana corrected her.
"Why do I even hang out with you people?" Tam grumbled, rolling his eyes.?
"Well, what did you get her, Bangs Boy?" Marella snapped back.
"Easy," Tam countered before handing Sophie an ice-blue jewel with clip. "Something to add to your bracelet."
Tam turned to Keefe and winked, causing Keefe to blush. Sophie decided not to wonder what that meant as she said, "Thanks! I'll make sure to add it."
Sophie clipped the ice- blue jewel to her bracelet as Biana began to share her gift.
"Ta-da!" Biana sung before whipping out an...alicorn pin? "This just came out in the Prattles shop! And, since you have a whole bond with Silveny and all, I decided to get it as your gift!"
"How did you get this, anyway?" Sophie asked as she admiredthe sparkly, winged alicorn Prattles pin.
"A Vanisher has her ways," Biana answered ominously before winking.tighter.
"Aaand before we explore Biana's illegal expeditions," Keefe cut in before she could ask any more questions. "I'm going to give you my gift, As the Lord of the Gifts should always give his presents last."
Before Sophie could say anything, Keefe placed an upside down piece of paper in her palm. As Sophie flipped it over, she gasped.
Sophie stared in wonder at his drawinh. It showed Sophie and her human family in front of their old house in San Francisco. each detail painted perfectly onto their faces. In the bottom it said Family by chance, love by choice.
"Told you she'd love it," Keefe bragged. He looked like he was about to say something else, but she cut him off by tackling him in a bear hug.
"Darn, he really is the gift master." Tam grumbled as Sophie squeezed Keefe tighter.
"That...was the best gift anyone could give me." Sophie said as they pulled out of the hug.
"Ouch, no insult there." Marella interjected.
"Well, Keefe did give her the most amazing present ever." Biana admitted.
"And I get even better!" Keefe boasted. "Because for this special day baby Foster came into the world, I'm bringing everyone to the...secret Mentor's cafeteria!"
"The what?" Marella asked.
"Foster, if you will," Keefe told her, bowing.
"Ugh. Of course he told Sophie and not us." Tam grunted
Sophie ignored him as all her held hands. As she ran faster and faster as she pictured the Mentor's cafeteria the best she could. Finally a black void opened, and she and her friends ran into it.Boy~
Something went wrong, though. Sophie suddenly felt an agonizing pain shoot through her chest. She let out a blood-curdling scream...then the world went dark.
...
Sophie's eyelids fluttered open to a vast blue sky. As she got up she realized she was lying on a bed of soft green grass. Sophie thought that she was in Havenfield before realizing she was in the middle of the forest.
"Ugh...did we Foster it again?" Keefe groaned, forcing himself up.
"I don't know, why don't you ask Sophie?" Marella snapped as she pukked herself up.
"This wasn't me," Sophie defemded herself.
"How do you know?" Tam asked groggily. "Guys - " Keefe started before Biana screamed. "Don't look now guys," Buena whimpered. " But there is something that looksits like it's about to make us its lunch" Sophie slowly turned around to see the monster Buena was talking about, and nearly let out a cry herself. It had long horns, the lodge of a bill but the head of a - Wait. "Is that a minotaur?"
