Chapter Two: Icarus, Sunday, and the Magic Field
To say that the offer had made Farrara ecstatic was an understatement. The girl had turned, said yes, and nearly jumped into the force field. She quickly hailed her father and then they were off. Farrara was a lot more excited about some empty hallways than Dex was about being included in a group shopping trip!
"Y'know, I live in a pretty big house, but this.... This is gigantic!" said Farrara.
"Thanks..?" said Dex with a smile. He liked the perky little girl. Sunday, who Dex had picked up before they got there, flew to Farrara's ear and nuzzled her.
"Hi, cutie! I bet you would LOVE to play with Icarus," said Farrara
"Who's Icarus?" asked Dex.
"My gremlin. He's a lot more tame than most, but he loves to play with little things. An imp would be his DREAM!"
"Well maybe you could bring him over some time," said Dex holding out a crystal. Farrara gasped.
"BEST. DAY. EVER!" She squeaked.
* * *
Farrara came over the next day. And the next. And the next and the next and the next. Dex learned tons of interesting things about his new friend, like the fact that she loved to bake, and that she had two little brothers named Rora and Konny. And she was right-Sunday LOVED to play with Icarus. The patchy gremlin was playful, yet gentle, and the two pets had a lot of fun unravelling balls of yarn. One day Farrara asked him if he wanted to see her favorite place in the world.
"Sure," said Dex. Almost as soon as the words had left his mouth, a beam of light had appeared and Farrara pulled him through it. When the light dissipated, Dex was left staring in awe at the most beautiful woodland glen in the universe.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Farrara breathed.
"It's more than beautiful," whispered Dex. "It's gorgeous."
Farrara grabbed his hand and pulled him through the trees. She ran through the forest, dragging Dex with her until they reached a field that overlooked a salty ocean. Farrara spun and laughed, sending butterflies twirling into the air and soon Dex found himself spinning and laughing too.
What would I have never had the glory of seeing without you? Dex thought as he watched Farrara spin at the same time she wondered,
What joy would I have never known if I had never met you?
