The Great Gulon Incident is an event frequently mentioned throughout the series. It is known to be a disruptive, mischievous event involving erupting gas, that took place at Foxfire three years before the series began. It most likely has to do with a Gulon, a smelly creature.
Who caused it[]
It is known that Keefe Sencen was the one behind this incident, though he vehemently denies any association. However, his prose suggests that he was the mastermind behind the whole plot.
Evidence[]
Book 3: Everblaze[]
In Everblaze, when Silveny was being treated with piquatine and Keefe finds that he is still covered in aromark, he says, "Well, all I can say is, Elwin better remove it this time. If these fingers start glowing again, I'm going to recreate the Great Gulon Incident in his office." After that, Sophie said, "I thought you had nothing to do with that," and Keefe "flashed her a wicked smile," proving that he had something to do with the event.[1]
Book 4: Neverseen[]
As Sophie was looking through Keefe's memories, she saw him carrying "a small green creature," presumably a Gulon. The sentence also lists that it happened during night, so perhaps he carried the Gulon/s to Foxfire overnight.
Book 5: Lodestar[]
“Linh showed them a notebook she'd been flipping through, where Keefe had drawn a detailed map of Foxfire and marked certain spots with 'Hide gulon here.'”
After Keefe destroys Magnate Leto's office, Grady says, "You're seriously going to equate this with one of his pranks? Like it's just another Great Gulon Incident?"[2]
Book 8.5: Unlocked[]
“Keefe's detention record that, "There must be evidence somewhere (something like this must have taken weeks of planning).”
Keefe receives no punishment to this current point in the storyline and covered up his tracks very cleanly.
Sophie continuously complains about the fact that no one ever tells her about it. In Unlocked, it is mentioned that "a number [of Gulons] became visible during Foxfire's infamous Great Gulon Incident".
An Official Story[]
Shannon Messenger has said she will not add the story into the books because she wants to do it justice, so she will be writing it as a short story from Keefe's POV after the main series is finished. This may be part of a short story collection she may publish after the Keeper of the Lost Cities series is done.
Councillor Alina states in Unlocked, Pg 109, Keefe's detention record that, "There must be evidence somewhere (something like this must have taken weeks of planning). " Keefe receives no punishment to this current point in the storyline, as he covered up his tracks very cleanly.
Quotes[]
“You may be the biggest news to hit the academy since the Great Gulon Incident three years ago—which, by the way, I had nothing to do with.”
