Stina Destry Heks (pronounced Stee-nuh Des-tree Hec-ks) is a female elf, and the daughter of Timkin and Vika Heks. In the earlier books, she and Sophie had a strong rivalry and Stina was constantly taunting her and trying to bully her. In Neverseen, she is willing to change her view on Sophie if Sophie can heal the gnomes and it is revealed her family are affiliated with and support the Black Swan. In Lodestar, it is revealed she is an Empath, like her mother. In Flashback, she assists Vika in delivering the alicorn twins. In Legacy, she becomes a member of Team Valiant and helps Sophie in many ways, proving that she is not as mean as she once was, however, Sophie still considers her a jerk.
Appearance[]
Stina is often described as having a "bean-pole" body, meaning she is tall and skinny. Her arms are bony. Stina's brown hair is curly and similar to a bird’s nest. Her eyes are navy blue- almost violet- in a certain light. When Stina smirks it's like a "cat trapping a helpless bird."
History[]
Book 1: Keeper of the Lost Cities[]
Stina is disliked by most prodigies. Dex makes her bald, which prompts her to put a Muskog in his locker.
Book 2: Exile[]
The Heks tried to take Silveny but failed. Stina continues to be disliked by Sophie and her friends and they tend to avoid talking to her whenever possible.
Book 3: Everblaze[]
Stina befriends Marella. She also is very against the healing of Fintan and spreads the rumor that Sophie would be doing a “freaky Inflictor thing” on Fitz to prepare.
Book 4: Neverseen[]
Timkin brought Sophie and her friends to Sterling Gables when Keefe goes into shock. Stina is there, and she brings Sophie meals. When Sophie asks her why she does not like her, she tells Sophie the reason is because that Sophie laughed with Dex when he turned Stina bald.
Book 5: Lodestar[]
Stina reveals that Marella is jealous of her because Stina manifested as an Empath.
Book 7: Flashback[]
Stina helps Silveny give birth to Wynn and Luna.
Book 8: Legacy[]
Stina, Dex, Biana, Sophie, and Wylie all become members of Team Valiant. Everyone seems unhappy that they have to work with Stina, and Stina feels the same way about them. Stina goes with them to Loamnore to face off with the Neverseen.
Book 8.5: Unlocked[]
Stina, Linh, Maruca, and Marella all seem to be close friends.
Book 9: Stellarlune[]
Stina makes a new nickname for Sophie, “Droolmonster.” She has a bigger part in the book series than in the beginning, and often accompanies Sophie and her friends, although she still appears to dislike most of them.
Relationships[]
Match Status: Unregistered
Timkin Heks[]
- (father)
He was in Exillium for faking a talent so he could get in the elite levels but has earned his way back. He works with unicorns, trying to earn a way into the Nobility, and he works with the Black Swan as Coiffe.
Vika Heks[]
- (mother)
She works with unicorns and assists with the baby alicorns. In Legacy, when Stina was made a Regent, her mother said, "You will make us all proud." Like Timkin, Vika feels the world needs to change, hence why she supports and assists the Black Swan, allowing her home to be used as a brief shelter for Sophie in Neverseen.
Sophie Foster[]
- (Frenemy/Possible love interest)
Stina isn't very kind to Sophie, believing Sophie is of lower social status. In Keeper of the Lost Cities, she makes bets about how long Sophie will last at Foxfire (among other things) and mocked her often. She tells Biana that she and Fitz being friends with Sophie is ruining the Vacker name. In Keeper of the Lost Cities, Stina is the first to tell Sophie that Biana first befriended her because Alden forced her to. In Neverseen, Stina becomes somewhat less hostile and tells Sophie that if anyone could fix things, it would be her. Stina also confesses that part of the reason why she treated Sophie the way she did was because Sophie laughed at her the first day she saw her in Slurps and Burps without knowing much about her. Dex had given her a potion that gave her a beard because Dex and Stina were in a feud. She becomes closer to Sophie in Legacy, and the two share a healthy friendship.
Dex Dizznee[]
- (Frenemy/Possible love interest)
Dex and Stina have a long-running battle of mean pranks on each other that started pre-Keeper. Dex made Stina bald and in return, Stina put a muskog in Dex's locker. Dex also gave Stina a beard, which was added as an extra pranking feature for her in the hairoids. Stina constantly holds the fact that Dex's parents are a bad match over his head. In Legacy, they began their partnership on Team Valiant together and started to like each other more.
Marella Redek[]
- (Friend/Possible love interest)
Marella used to hate Stina in Keeper of the Lost Cities and Exile but eventually became friends with her during Everblaze when Sophie didn't really pay attention to her. However, in Lodestar, Marella is envious of her when Stina manifests as an Empath, an ability that Marella wanted to manifest in to help her mother and pulls away from Stina as a result.
Maruca Chebota[]
- (friend/possible love interest)
Maruca and Stina became friends after Biana started hanging out with Sophie as Maruca felt abandoned by Biana. She was also the one who told Stina the real reason Biana became friends with Sophie, which caused Sophie to temporarily break her friendship with Biana as she was very upset that Biana had lied to her about them being friends.
Biana Vacker[]
- (Frenemy/Possible love interest)
Biana and Stina used to dislike each other in earlier books. Stina was the one who told Sophie that Biana was only friends with her because Alden forced her to. Later in Legacy, Stina and Biana work together to help Sophie find out who her biological parents are. It is also observed by Sophie in Legacy that Biana looked "less uncomfortable" about the fact that Stina was right. These two have formed a healthy friendship through Legacy since they are both on Team Valiant.
Character Bio by Shannon Messenger[]
Stina can be hard to like, and she prefers it that way. She’s not looking to be Miss Popular because most people aren’t worth her time—and someone should definitely think twice before they mess with her. Especially Dex. Sure, her family’s had a few scandals over the years—but that doesn’t change how important they are. After all, they’re single-handedly making sure unicorns remain a thriving species—and Stina’s a huge part of that. Maybe it’s not as fancy as the Vackers, but who cares about the Vackers, anyway? That family has gone majorly downhill since they started wasting so much time on Sophie Foster—and don’t even get Stina started on Sophie. As far as Stina is concerned, Sophie Foster is the most overrated thing to hit Foxfire since the boring Great Gulon Incident.

Trivia[]
- Stina's middle name, Destry, means "horse keeper" or "war horse" likely referencing her family's history with unicorns.
- Shannon Messenger accidentally gave Stina two last names: Heks and Logner. Initially naming her "Stina Logner" on page 149 of Keeper of the Lost Cities, she later forgot whether she had given Stina a last name and used the surname "Heks" for the following books in the series. This error was later corrected.
- In her registry file in Unlocked, it is shown that she has legal permission to use a spyball.
Quotes[]
“If you can't do it, I don't know who can.”
“Since when is 'not dying' a qualification for leadership?”
