Sophitz/Fitzphie is the romantic/friendship pairing between Sophie Elizabeth Foster and Fitzroy Avery Vacker. Beginning from the very second they met, Sophie had a crush on him. Her heart usually flutters when she sees him (In Flashback, the narration states that her heart did not flutter as much because she was worried at the moment). These feelings cause her to blush and her heart to flutter when she is around him. The two also hold hands often, usually for Cognate training or moral support. As the books went on, Sophie's heart flutters less as she was around Fitz. However, this does not mean that she did not grow closer to him, only that she's more used to his frequent good looks and "movie star" smiles.

Throughout the series, Sophie and Fitz have a bond that becomes stronger and stronger, helping them grow as both cognates and great friends. For them to become Cognates they must have complete trust in each other, one way of increasing trust is sharing secrets with each other, which makes their relationship even more intimate. One of the many reasons people think that Sophie and Fitz fit so well together is because they both know pain, so they comfort each other in troubling times. They trust each other more than anyone and understand their minds completely. They are always there for moral support, often crying or laughing together.

Sophie and Fitz both find each other attractive and Fitz has called Sophie pretty and complimented her many times. They share many romantic moments (usually under the shade of Calla’s Panakes tree) and their feelings have grown more special over the past few books.

Not only are they there to cry on each other's shoulders, but they also bring joy to the other's life. In Lodestar, Sophie gives Fitz his favorite dessert for a midterms gift, and he "smiled his first real smile in weeks."

In Exile, Fitz blames Sophie of being 'damaged' and that is the reason why Alden, his father, ends up with a broken mind after going with Sophie to Exile to perform a memory break on Fintan. Fitz and Sophie's friendship crumbles until Sophie fixes Alden's mind after Mr. Forkle gave her a dose of limbium to heal herself. Before Sophie attempts to heal Alden, Fitz apologizes for his rude behavior to Sophie. He told her that Keefe filled him in about what happened the day before, which made him apprehend how his actions and words let Sophie be in the Neverseen's reach. He also explained that his anger was a way of coping with the grief of losing his father. Fitz also said whether Sophie did or did not heal his father, he would stop accusing her of Alden's broken mind. In the end, Sophie still manages to fix Alden's mind.

In Lodestar and Neverseen, it was revealed that Fitz has feelings for Sophie. In the first book, he originally said that he saw Sophie as a little sister. Fitz was the third elf Sophie ever met, and they supported each other through nearly all of the books published. Fitz is also very protective of her and is constantly concerned about her safety. At the end of Lodestar, Fitz was about to kiss her, but Keefe interrupted. In Nightfall, Fitz implied that he wanted her to register for the matchmaking and constantly baked treats for her. He also became very worried about her and came to check on her almost every night. Fitz has already registered for matchmaking, and at the end of Flashback, Sophie attempts to register but is told that she cannot be matched.

In Flashback, Fitz and Sophie is stuck in the healing center together for a few weeks due to a painful Neverseen attack. During the "Fitzphie slumber-party," as Keefe calls it, the close friends become even closer. After Sophie helps Fitz probe Alvar's mind, Fitz takes her to Everglen's reception hall, where he tells her, "I want it to be you." He also tells her that he doesn't want to pressure her on matchmaking, and he wants Sophie to, "just trust me." Sophie and Fitz are about to kiss when a pained Silveny interrupts them. Later in the book, Fitz twirls Sophie around after they implanted Luna and Wynn. They also talk under Calla's panakes tree about trusting each other and how their relationship will work out. Although Sophie and Fitz are not officially dating as of Flashback, they definitely are smitten with one another, and they are waiting a while before they start dating.

Fitz means " son of the king" and Sophie means "wisdom," "wise," and "pretty." Roy (the second half of Fitz's first name) means "seeker of wisdom", which many fans say may imply that Fitz is seeking Sophie. "Roy" is also a nickname for someone who lived in a regal fashion or who had earned their title in some contest of skill. Fitz is very popular and well known for his strong telepathy. He is given the nickname "wonder boy" as an insult, but it seems to be fitting- Sophie may agree.

In the preface, the only thing Sophie can clearly remember - that is happy - is Fitz's teal eyes. (Preface)

Fitz notes that when he was looking for Sophie in Book 1: Keeper of the Lost Cities, he thought she looked very much like an elf. As elves are naturally more attractive than humans, it is most likely that Fitz was indicating that Sophie was pretty.
During Cognate training, Sophie's face pops into Fitz's head two times when talking about telepathy lessons.

Fitz asks Sophie whether or not he should go ahead or behind her, asking which option is easier on her (because she is having to go back to the Neverseen's hideout where she was kidnapped which brings back devastating memories).

Sophie is in 3rd year, and she realizes that after two years she can register for matchmaking. This may imply that Fitz is waiting for Sophie to become old enough to register.

Fitz holds Sophie's hands and won't let go, trying to get her to listen to him about the risks of bringing Amy to the Lost Cities.
Sophie mentions Fitz when just introducing the story of what's been going on in her life for the past two years.
Amy asks if Fitz is Sophie's boyfriend and says "you get all dreamy-eyed when you talk about him.”
Sophie begins thinking about how Fitz almost kissed her (though Amy interrupts her thoughts).
Fitz wraps his arm around Sophie's waist to support her when she enhances Dex, who is trying to figure out the caches.
Fitz's smile makes her heart fluttery, and she thinks that he smells good.
Fitz is, as Keefe puts it, "adorably consistent" when insisting he should go with Sophie to Ravagog.
Keefe mentions the Cognate rings and Fitz tilts his hands so that the rings are more visible.
"'You know we're stronger together,' Fitz told her, and the intensity in his eyes made her mouth go dry."
Sophie once again gets jealous of Linh when Fitz agrees to help her search Candleshade.
Fitz puts his hand on Sophie's back to help steady her.
Sophie gets the flutters again.
When Keefe claims he knows Sophie better than Fitz because he claimed keeping her steady was a two-person job - and he was right - Fitz corrects him, saying that it isn't that Keefe knows Sophie better. It's that Fitz has more faith in her.
He supports her going up the stairs to see Mr. Forkle, and Sophie feels fluttery.
Sophie once again thinks about her almost-kiss with Fitz, though she tries to tell herself that Fitz could have meant anything by "skip the talking"
Tiergan points out the long drop to the ground and Fitz moves closer to Sophie
Fitz brings her Alvar's Radiant as a present to drop down the stairs and smash.
When he brings her the present of the Radiant, and her heart skips "at least five beats."
Linh asks if Fitzphie became official.
Sophie throws the Radiant and the goblins yell, but they laugh together and Sophie says it felt good.
"'Ugh, score one for Fitzphie,' Keefe mumbled."
Fitz lets Sophie know that if she needs help, she can ask him.
Sophie tells Fitz that once she gets her parents back, she'll do the trust exercises with him... and not hold anything back (since she was hiding her crush on him.) Fitz smiles and it makes Sophie's insides flip, and then flip again when Fitz says that it might be better than she thinks.
Dex asks if it would be different if Fitz gave her crush cuffs, and she blushes.
She reaches out to Fitz right after the episode with Dimitar, and he rushes over with a present. She tells him everything.
Fitz tells Gisela that Sophie is delegating to HIM, putting himself in a special category.
Fitz says Keefe isn't crazy powerful like Sophie.
Sophie tells Lady Gisela that she knows a lot of loyal people. Gisela asks if Fitz is one of them, and he scoots closer to Sophie and says that yes, he is.
Gisela says Keefe was devastated when he thought Sophie was dead, and Fitz snaps that they all were.
He wraps his arm around her while she replays part of her kidnapping.
He pulls her closer as Gisela is frustratingly vague.
He leans in to tell her who they should bring to Nightfall.
When Biana and Sandor are complaining about Fitz's cologne, Sophie says that she likes it.
Sophie blushes as she remembers he brought her pudding puffs he made himself, and how his eyes were concerned and prideful and "something she couldn’t quite put her finger on that had made it very hard to breathe."
Fitz spends most of his day baking for Sophie.
He smiles in a far-too-adorable way when Tam asks what he did yesterday, and asks "Besides baking for Sophie?"
He gives Sophie a long goodbye hug and whispers for her to be careful.
Sophie blushes (see #34).
Marella asks if Fitzphie is official and Sophie blushes and isn't sure what to say.
He says he should probably be somewhere else, but he needed to be there for her.

She threatens to read Mr. Forkle's mind, and Fitz immediately offers to help.
Fitz and the others walk in on Sophie and Keefe hugging and Fitz asks if “he was interrupting something”. His jaw was also clenched, showing he was mad and jealous of Sophie/Keefe.
When they finally find Nightfall, Fitz moves closer to Sophie and takes her hand.
Fitz hugs her and promises everything will be alright after Mr. Forkle reveals Nightfall's purpose.
He shoves Keefe out of the way to offer her a mental boost.
Fitz smiles at Sophie.
Fitz comes over to check on her every night especially when she was in her ‘zombie mode'.

Fitz suddenly says, "I want it to be you." two times when he tells Sophie that he wants her name on his list.
Sophie cries from happiness when she realizes it isn't a daydream.
Sophie tells him that she's had a crush on him from the moment they met.
Sophie then says to herself that Fitz had given her perfect smiles before, but the smile he gave her now was amazing.
"Fitz laughed and took her other hand, holding on in a way that felt different from all the other times they'd held hands before--like he was never going to let her go again." (pg. 586)
Fitz then claims that he has a new goal, which is to get her to trust him. Sophie says that she does trust him, then he says, "then trust this" and they are about to kiss when Silveny interrupts.
After they bring the Hekses to Silveny and Greyfell and sees them, Sophie begins to fall but Fitz catches her and pulls her against him.
Stina yells to Sophie and Fitz to stop cuddling and help her set up the birth area.
Fitz comforts Sophie when they learn the baby alicorns are going to die.
Sophie clings to Fitz, soaking his cape with her tears.
Sophie notes that Grady and Edaline seem very interested in how she was all wrapped up in Fitz.
When Tarina is talking about the hive, she says "I wouldn't be surprised if we have a few eavesdroppers. Your boyfriend in particular." (pg. 612)
Sophie at first tries to deny this, but then stops herself when she remembers that Fitz almost kissed her.
Fitz assures Sophie that he would never laugh if she fell in the lake and offers to give her his cape to dry off if she does.
Sophie notices his sweet smile and considers it to be such a boyfriend thing to offer and can't help but blush when she smiles back.
When they are about to separate while in the woods, Fitz hugs her "much tighter than usual."
For the rest of the book, Sophie continually leans on Fitz's shoulder whenever she's scared or sad.
When Tam and Wylie look suspiciously at Sophie leaning on Fitz, Sophie says to herself, Fitz didn't seem to care, and that his shoulder was quickly becoming her favorite place in the world.
Fitz spins Sophie around after Silveny successfully gives birth and the twins are transported. She doesn't even care that Stina is watching them closely, she just cares that she's holding onto Fitz.
Later at Havenfield, Sophie and Fitz were talking about how Silveny and Greyfell are "snuggling" and Fitz moves closer and Sophie thinks he's going to put his arm around her, until she realizes that Grady is watching them.
While the two are sitting there, Edaline and Grady keep giving Sophie a lot of raised eyebrows and sappy smiles.
Grady and Edaline leave to let Sophie and Fitz talk. Sophie asks him if it's possible to die from embarrassment, and Fitz says, "If you think they're bad, wait until my parents find out about us."(pg 658)
When Sophie realizes that Fitz used the word us and that they're now a thing, she can't decide whether she wants to do a cartwheel or bury her face in her hands.
Fitz admits that Biana has been teasing him about liking her for a while.
Fitz says Biana tried to get him to buy Sophie crush cuffs when she finished level Three. He then sounds "adorably shy" and tells her, "But... if you want some, I'd go get them in a heartbeat."
Sophie says to herself that after that, part of her wanted to "kiss him silly."
When Sophie becomes really upset about the drama that their relationship would bring to everyone else, Fitz leads her over to the Panakes tree, where they sit so close that their knees are touching. (pg 660)
Sophie says to herself that it was pretty much the perfect romantic setting.
Fitz holds her hands and tries to make her feel better.
