I think you said you were interested in my Sophie rant as well, didn't you?
I actually really liked Sophie in books one and two... I admire that she could alst so long in the human world as a telepath. I admire the strength it took for her to leave her family and start a whole new way of life with literally no warning, especially with her being so special and powerful. She was brave and determined while she fought against her new world, but also the Black Swan (well, sort of), trying the whole time to 'fit in', rebuild her life. And she grew as a character, finding another family- Edaline and Grady can never be her parents, she can never be Jolie- but they're still a family. In Exile, her mind was cracking. She was scared and overwhelmed and still did her best to fix things and protect the people she cared about. She let Forkle inject her with a substance that triggers a deadly allergy so she could save Alden. She's afraid and does things despite it, because she believes that she's doing what is right. That's what I'd call a strong character. I would have loved to watch this Sophie grow and develop, with her natural strength pushing her through tough times.
And then Everblaze happened. And it's like Shannon started undoing Sophie. She breaks a law, nearly gets carried off by Dimitar and gets punished for it. So she tries to stay sedated as long as she possibly can. She sulks and whines and no, it's not the low self-esteem that bothers me. I'm not even sure if I'd consider it low self-esteem. She's not worried she's worthless, she's upset that she's no longer important and special. That's a pretty selfish thing to be sulking about, don't you think? Sorry, Sophie, but your world might be in danger, you family and friends certainly are- we don't have time for you to throw yourself a pity party because you're no longer the special snowflake. I'm not saying she shouldn't be upset. She should. But she wallows. She sulks and pities herself and becomes effectively useless. She does it in Flashback too. My friends are training without me while I'm stuck here! *sulks* Without me! *pouts* That wasn't very nice, nor put very well, but it's possibly the best way for me to sum up what I feel Sophie was like for the hospital scene. Instead of training, doing her best to speed up her recovery, and doing something useful while she's stuck, she throws herself another pity party. Why, Sophie, why? You were such a strong character. Be upset- it's natural. Push through anyway! There's more at stake than your comfort or status as number one most important weapon of the Black Swan.
Or what about Nightfall? I'm not going to go into this in too much detail, because this rant is too long already, but seriously? If my parents were in danger, I know I would fall apart, so I don't blame Sophie for that. I do blame her for letting it take over, especially when she was her own best chance at rescuing them. Stop wallowing. Deal with things. Don't sulk, or wallow, or numb yourself. Deal with them, find ways to fix them. Don't give in, let others do the work and turn yourself into a robot while you do it. Sophie handles things terribly and I hate it.
As for her boy-craziness... again, Sophie, the world does not revolve around you. Set aside the drama, because having a boyfriend won't help you when the Neverseen start destroying everything.
To sum it, our strong, brave, determined girl, who would always fight for what she thinks is right, has become a self-pitying, self-centered, sulky, boy-obsessed girl who can't handle anything difficult anymore, because, for all her amazing powers, she's mentally weak. Characters should grow, not digress.
I agree, I didn't mind Sophie, maybe even liked her, in the first and maybe second books. I could understand how she kept getting beaten by an invisible threat, and she was in a completely new world with the emotional baggage of her family. And in Exile, ok, she's trying to fix Alden, that's really awesome of her, to realize and accept that she was made to do things and choosing to do them instead of rejecting the, because they're not "her".
But then she kept getting power after power, and I started to get a little annoyed. I don't like overpowered characters as a rule, ESPECIALLY main characters. And one of the main reasons that people are okay with Sophie having so many powers, at least that I've talked to, is that she doesn't really want them. Well that's kinda what bugs me. She shouldn't be power hungry or anything, but at least want the special abilities that you've been given, and then actually MAKE PROGRESS!!! She is barely ahead of where she was in the early books, but now she knows her enemies, and yet her friends still do most of the work. She's supposed to be the Moonlark, but the thing that really struck me was how Tam would rather go to the Neverseen than leave his sister's safety in Sophie's hands. She isn't useless, but honestly, it feels like if she wasn't the Moonlark, she should be a minor character.
Also, can we talk about the end of flashback please? So like I said, Tam goes to the Neverseen, because he refuses to endanger his sister, despite Sophie's promises to protect her. She hears this, and listens to Tam's reluctance to join the Black Swan in the first place, and it goes completely over her head. Not only that, but right after, she goes to get her freaking matchmaking scroll. Um, EXCUSE ME?? One of the people YOU dragged into this was just coerced into joining the Neverseen, AGAIN, his twin sister is grieving, and you don't even check if she's okay. No. You go to the matchmakers, because what could possibly be more important than your boy drama when your friends' lives and the world is at stake? She really has no sense of priorities. Surely someone as smart as Sophie, who "always has a plan", knows that getting your list isn't going to magically make the Neverseen go poof. She needs to pick her head up, realize she's at war and that her distraction is costing her friends their freedom and happiness, and start acting like the leader everyone thinks she is. And like you pointed out beautifully, be upset! You are allowed to feel emotions, Sophie! But she lets them swallow her, and even when they don't, she just sits there and waits for someone else to come up with the plan and do the work. For all her powers, Sophie is still as fragile and non-threatening as the twelve year old girl from the Forbidden Cities.
I'm tired of her boy drama taking over everything, so much so that Marella, who just officially joined the group, had to tell her not to get all angsty about it. I'm waiting for her distraction to cost someone their life, and then she still won't learn. She'll just rely on Fitz and Keefe even more. She really needs to grow up, before Tam realizes that the Black Swan will never win with Sophie like this and joins the Neverseen, or before Dex or Biana gets fatally injured because her eyes were on Fitz or Keefe's Papercut.

7. Due to multiple unfortunate events, the limit of <big> tags is 18. Do not, under any circumstances (unless given explicit permission by both Cress and Charlotte, and no one else) exceed this limit.
8. It is strongly recommended that wikians diagnosed with anatidaephobia (noun; the irrational fear that somewhere, a duck or goose is watching you) do not join this club, as members will have many ducks stalking them. However, joining this club may be a way to get over your fear of stalkery waterfowl. Your call.
9. You must be a captain to edit this template or make ducky threads.
10. OPTIONAL: it is suggested for you to put something, doesn't matter if it's small or large, on your profile indicating that you are a part of this, but if you do not have an account, this rule does not apply to you.
You do not have to have an account. You can join without an account, but you have to have something that we can call you. We elect one captain whenever one is needed. Captains are to be as weird as possible, as well as recruit members to our club(/cult). Captains and wiki administrators are the only ones allowed to edit this Strange Ducks badge.
You must have your article approved by said captain
You must give said captain a rundown of what the article to be about

A Flashback to When Duck Society Was Young
As I'm currently writing this, the Strange Ducks has around 60 members. Wow! I'm honestly surprised and happy at how far the Ducks have come! I joined wiki in late December, and discovered the Strange Ducks through comments on the LGBTQ+ Keeper page. At the time, MagicDaydreamer didn't have an account, and I was worried she wouldn't see my message if I left it on her FANDOM User wall, so I asked Charlotte instead. Since then, I've been so happy and excited to see MagicDaydreamer get an account, people join the strange ducks, and being the first captain.
While the Strange Ducks is mostly for fun, I've made everlasting friendships through it. I can finally connect with people like me, and who accept me for being me! I can rant about things that I do, and why I'm such a weirdo, and everyone accepts me for who I am.
Thank you for everyone who joined the strange ducks! I can safely say it's been a wonderful experience, and I hope that if you read this and you aren't already a duck, you should totally be one!
As I write this, the Strange Ducks have nearly 100 members. I can't wait until duck society has enough members to form a ducky city. Cress and Charlotte have announced the recruiting of more Strange Duckies. If you are qualified to recruit more duckies, I wish you all luck. The Strange Ducks have come a long way since they were started. We have 96 members so far. We only need four more. Good Luck Strange Ducks!! Hey, that rhymed!
No, I actually didn’t. But i’m Super flattered, thank you! ❤️❤️
