Maruca Chebota is Biana's ex-friend, although she and Biana fix their friendship in Flashback. Little is known about Maruca, except that she is Wylie's second cousin and she is currently Stina's friend, as well as Linh's. She briefly also hung out with Marella, and re-connected with her in Legacy. After Biana began hanging out with Sophie in Keeper of the Lost Cities, she spills a lot of Biana's secrets to Stina. For example, she told Stina about how at first Alden told Biana that she had to be friends with Sophie so Sophie would come over more and Alden could keep a better watch on her. This causes Sophie to be upset and she wanted to be alone, resulting in her kidnapping. This is why Biana no longer wanted to be her friend because she spilled her secrets and was mean to her friends. Maruca interacted with Wylie's often as a young child.
Appearance[edit | edit source]
Maruca has dark skin and black hair a small blue streak in it. In Lodestar, she is described to have turquoise eyes. It was also mentioned that she bore a somewhat minor resemblance to Wylie.
In Book 8: Legacy, her appearance is described as gorgeous. Her hair hangs in long and beautiful dreadlocks, half of which are pulled into a complicated twist on the top of her head with a streak of blue in the middle. Her lips are fuchsia in color.
Relationships[edit | edit source]
- Wylie (Second-Cousin)
Maruca cares a lot about her second cousin Wylie, as shown in Lodestar when she blackmailed the Black Swan into seeing him. Maruca and Wylie both care about each other very much, as shown many times throughout the books.
Wylie reaches out to Sophie in Book 8: Legacy, asking her to interfere and prevent Maruca from joining the Black Swan out of concern for her safety. In response, Maruca says that she doesn't need him telling her what or what not to do.
- Tam (Co-workers/Possible Love Interest)
Maruca was Biana's best friend until Biana became friends with Sophie. She told Stina the reason Biana became friends with Sophie, which temporarily ended their friendship after Stina told Sophie that reason. In Lodestar, Maruca seems to want her friendship with Biana back but doesn't make a move to change that, and Biana said that if she truly wants to be friends with her again she had to accept her friendship with Sophie. As of Legacy, they work together and are allies.
Character Traits[edit | edit source]
In Book 1: Keeper of the Lost Cities, Maruca reveals to Stina, Biana's secret about Alden forcing Biana to be Sophie's friend. Maruca spilled Biana's secrets and was acting very hostile towards Sophie.
Maruca blackmails the Black Swan into letting her see Wylie in Book 5: Lodestar. In Book 8: Legacy, she is determined to join the Black Swan with her new ability being a game-changer to the defense play.
Maruca has been protected by Wylie for a long time. After she manifested she wanted to go out and join the Black Swan to help them win against the Neverseen. She even especially went to Havenfield, to convince Sophie to let her be in the Black Swan. This was even against Wylie's wishes, therefore she is independent and wants to be recognized as powerful not as someone who needs to be protected.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- When being sorted into an Exillium hemisphere, she was sorted into the Right Hemisphere with the Blue coach, Coach Bora
- Maruca is the second Psionipath, in the series, the first being the Neverseen's, Ruy Tonio Ignis
- In Book 8: Legacy, in Loamnore she showed Lady Gisela Minette Sencen that she was a psionpath, Gisela said "I will come for you soon" meaning that she would either forcibly take Maruca to the Neverseen, or recruit her, since Ruy Tonio Ignis was injured.

“I’m a Psionipath. I’m the piece you’ve been missing. And if you let me fight on your side, I can turn this game in our favor.”
Character Bio by Shannon Messenger[edit | edit source]
Maruca thought she knew who her friends were—but then Biana had to go and get too busy with Sophie Foster to hang out anymore. And then Stina had to go and blab a bunch of things she’d told her in confidence and make a big mess. Thank goodness for her family—her family is awesome. Especially her cousin, Wylie. She’d do anything for him. Well, almost anything. She won’t let him tell her what to do—but nobody gets to do that. She can handle herself. And people need her help.
