It is unknown what Manticores appear as in the series, considering that they were only mentioned in Book 1: Keeper of the Lost Cities briefly. Out of the tiny notice they had, it was described that a gnome had interrupted breakfast yelling something about a manticore stinging a stegosaurus. This showcases that they have natural weapons, and it is a matter of urgency when they sting something.
