Linh Hai Song (pronounced Lin-Hi-Song) is a sixteen-year-old elf (fourteen when introduced) and a member of the Black Swan. At the age of eleven, she was banished from the Lost Cities to Exillium with her twin brother Tam, where she stayed as a Wayward until the age of fifteen. She is a Hydrokinetic, and is known for being the infamous "Girl of Many Floods," after she flooded Atlantis. As of Legacy, Linh resides in Choralmere with her parents and is attending Foxfire Academy. The name "Linh" is a Vietnamese name, along with Tam and her parents. It means "spirit" or "soul." The name "Linh" also has a lot of other meanings. "Hai," her middle name, means "ocean" or "sea" in Chinese— a fitting name for a Hydrokinetic.

The family's last name was originally Tong (in Vietnamese, it's spelled Tống", but her great-great-grandmother changed it to Song in honor of her profession. Song is the Chinese variation of "Tống".

Appearance

Linh has waist-length jet-black hair with silver tips, created by melting her registry pendant chain) after she was banished to remind her what happens when she loses control, silver-blue dramatic eyes, soft pink lips and a creamy complexion with soft pink cheeks. She is implied to be far more beautiful than the average elf[4] and looks like a K-pop idol according to Sophie.

She is also said to be looking quiet, thoughtful and serene, though she has a feisty side. She is close with Sophie and her friends.

Linh Song had a more difficult childhood than most elves. Her parents were ashamed that they had twins, which is a rarity in the Lost Cities that is seen to be a curse and a disgrace. As a result, they did not like her nor her brother very much and tried to convince other elves that Tam was actually a year older than Linh. Both twins bravely refused to go along with this lie. She was banished from the Lost Cities and sent to Exillium after she almost flooded Atlantis. She was still new to her powers as a Hydrokinetic at the time and was not yet in full control of her powers, as stated by Mr. Forkle. The incident that almost flooded Atlantis was after a few other previous ones, and at that point, her parents decided they had to let her go. Tam, her brother, disagreed with this and says in the books, "They had a choice, all right." This is why she had difficulty with underwater breathing lessons held in Exillium, even though she is a Hydrokinetic. She kept muttering "I can't, I can't" whenever Tam encouraged her to hold her breath underwater. Tam was not sentenced to Exillium, but instead did not want to have his parents lie about him being an only child, also not wanting Linh to go through it on her own. This is one of the reasons their bond is so strong.

Tam, her twin, was angry at their parents, who would attempt to pass him off as an only child. He went with her to Exillium and left their parents. Linh and Tam both melted their registry pendants, and they dipped the ends of their hair in the liquefied substance, creating silver streaks in their hair. For Tam, it was a sign of rebellion, while Linh wanted a reminder of what can happen if she loses control. She states this in her first meeting with Sophie in Neverseen.

LINH LILAC 1

Linh

Linh is shown to be very fond of animals. In a bet started by Grizel, the boys and girls had to compete to find something important left by Keefe in Candleshade. Because the girls won, Tam knew that he had to go to Claws, Wings, Horns and Things to get Linh a pet, a murcat, whom she named Princess Purryfins. Linh is seen to be excited about owning this murcat, even though Tam states that it is poisonous and can be deadly. In fact, Linh could "lose a few fingers" in the process of training one. In the book Flashback, Linh begged Sophie to let her ride on Greyfell when she saw Sophie preparing to fly on Silveny.

Abilities and Skills

Hydrokinetics are elves with the ability to control the element of water. Hydrokinetics describe themselves as being drawn to water. Sometimes those who have not yet mastered the ability find it hard to visit Atlantis, as Atlantis is surrounded by water. They can draw mist from the air and use it to camouflage themselves into the surroundings. Hyrdokinetics can also create objects out of the mist in the air such as water balls and are able to walk on the surface of water. Linh Song was able to stop Atlantis from flooding in Nightfall using her ability.

History:

Book 4: Neverseen

The plague hit Wildwood while Linh and Tam were living there. They see both the Council and the Neverseen come to investigate the plague.

Linh and Tam are students at Exillium. When Sophie accidentally burns the Arch of Dividing, Linh uses her powers as a hydrokinetic to put out the fire. When Sophie sees her struggling with breath control, she inflicts positive emotions to help Linh get through the activity. To return the favor, Tam and Linh invite Sophie to Wildwood Colony. There, they introduce themselves and tell Sophie what they know about the plague. Later, Sophie brings her friends to see them, and Mr. Forkle sets them up to stay with the dwarves.

Linh is the one who convinces Tam to help the Black Swan break into Ravagog to find a cure for the plague. While making their escape, Linh floods Ravagog, destroying half the city.

Book 5: Lodestar

In Lodestar, Linh entertains Wylie while he is recovering from his interrogation with water figures.

Book 6: Nightfall

When the team goes down to Atlantis to look for Vespera's Nightfall, Linh is part of the team, and helps fight the Gorgodon.

Book 7: Flashback

[edit] Linh helps calm Tam down with 'Happy Shadow Thoughts.'

Book 8: Legacy

Linh, along with Marella and Maruca came to Havenfield, to visit Sophie. Linh said she came to support Maruca in her decision to tell Sophie her ability (as a Psionipath) and join the Black Swan. While Maruca was talking to Sophie, she was playing with Silveny and Greyfell's two baby twin alicorns, Wynn and Luna. After that, she asked to Sophie to try and telepathically contact Tam who was captured by the Neverseen and forced to train, and do what the Neverseen wanted. This upset Tam, and he told Linh "stay out of the water", and to "go to Choralmere" which Linh said was code for when she was in trouble. In order to deter suspicions, she, with the guard of Bo, went to back to Choralmare.

Later in the book, she sneaks into Loamnore with Marella and Keefe (and her dwarven bodyguards). She asked Tam to stop following the Neverseen, but he couldn't since his hands were bound by Etherine bonds (made by Glimmer). Later on, when Tam was back home from the Neverseen, she mentioned that they had reconciled, but that he was "difficult to read right now"

Book 8.5: Unlocked

Linh decided not to stay with Tam at Solreef and instead to continue residing at Choralmere with her parents. Tam tells Sophie it is because she thought it was crowded, but it truly was because she disliked Glimmer.

Relationships

Official Match Status: Unregistered

  • TAM (twin brother)

Tam is very protective of Linh, and although he had nothing to do with the almost-flooding of Atlantis unlike his twin sister, he still chose to be banished from the Lost Cities with Linh, foiling their parents' plan to make Tam an only child so they wouldn't have to be ashamed of bringing twins into the world. Tam attended Exillium with Linh before the Council lifted their banishment.

Since they grew up together and wanted to rebel against their parents, they have an incredibly close brother-sister bond. Their parents wanted people to think they were not twins, but they chose otherwise - even if it meant going away from the protection of the Lost Cities. They also have a way of discreetly communicating using a secret code they invented while they were fleeing. They chose two "I'm in trouble" phrases in case either of them were in danger, made up of code words so that the Telepaths on the Council wouldn't find them. The code for when Tam is in danger is some variant of "ocean", and the code for when Linh is in danger is "Choralmare"

Sophie attended Exillium with Linh when she was banished from the Lost Cities. When Linh couldn't keep calm enough to hold her breath for long, Sophie helped her by inflicting calm across the water to tranquilize her. Sophie was also the one who told Mr. Forkle about the twins' situation and made him offer Linh and Tam a proper place to stay at Alluveterre.

Fitz, along with Dex, stares at Linh and says "Wow" when Linh crosses the river at Wildwood, when they first meet her, and often when she uses her ability. It is unknown whether he is impressed by her ability to raise up the whole river, or whether he truly has a romantic interest for her. He also catches her when she trips from concentrating on forming a bubble around them to keep them dry from the rain, and then compliments her abilities. He helps steady her when she lifts the river in Ravagog.

Dex, along with Fitz, stares at Linh and says "Wow" when Linh crosses the river at Wildwood or often when she uses her ability. It is unknown whether he is impressed by her ability to raise up the whole river, or whether he truly has a romantic interest for her. Although Dex is suspected to have a possible love interest with Linh, further relationship is doubted.

After hearing from Sophie about Tam and Linh's situation, he said that they should probably keep themselves serrate, but as Tam and Linh continued to prove themselves, he immediately offered them a place to stay in Alluveterre, where they could be safe, and at the same time avoid facing their parents until they were ready. After hearing about their organization, Linh became interested in the Black Swan and even took the initiative to ask Mr. Forkle what she could do if she wanted to join the Black Swan. As of Lodestar, she has officially joined the Black Swan with her twin, Tam.

In Lodestar, Linh defends Keefe in front of the Black Swan when Tam, Wraith, and Granite were speaking against him. In chapter 19 of Legacy, Marella also hints about Linh having a crush on Keefe. She then changes the subject, probably because she was confided to and didn’t mean to spill the secret.

  • WYLIE (friend/foster brother)

Linh and Wylie are close friends, and could be more in the future, thought there is a notable age gap in between them. Linh is 16 and Wylie is 20 (as of Book 8.5).

In Lodestar and Nightfall, Linh helps heal Wylie after he was attacked. It's implied that they share a friendship and that they trust each other. Linh is noted to have visited Wylie several times.

In Flashback, Wylie glares at Bo for glaring at Linh at Havenfield. Linh also has a pendant that leaps to Wylie's house of which she hangs around her neck.

In Legacy, Sophie describes their relationship as "very close" when Wylie offers to inform Linh about Team Valiant.

as of Unlocked Linh is living at Tiegrain’s (Wylie’s adoptive father) house, thus making them foster siblings.

Biana and Linh met in Neverseen. They are friends and are on good terms. When the team goes down to Atlantis to look for Vespera's Nightfall, Biana trusts Linh in going below the waters, even though she is known for flooding half of the city.

Marella and Linh are good friends. They trained together in their abilities, despite having control over two opposite elements, Pyrokinesis and Hydrokinesis. They are seen to get along fairly well, despite having different personalities. Linh and Marella are trying to find a way to merge their abilities.

Quan is Linh's father. He was very embarrassed to have twins, and often tried to make the twins tell people that they were a year apart. When Quan was in the Tribunal because Linh had flooded Atlantis and she was being sent to Exillium, he didn't argue, which lead Linh and Tam to believe that he wanted her gone, so he could have the appearance that he has one child.

Mai is the softer of the parents. She didn't protest against the banishment, and let Tam follow Linh to Exilium, but in Book 6: Nightfall, when Alvar was found and Tam, Linh, Biana, and Sophie dropped him of at Choralmere (where Quan and Mai lived), and it was revealed that Mai missed the twins, and had paintings with Linh on one side and had Tam on another. This means that Mai is still embarrassed to have twins, but actually cares about her kids to some extent.

"Is that real silver?". Jensi asks about Linh and Tam's hair when he first meets them. He asks them many questions about Exillium. He also tells Tam and Linh about the Ultimate Splotching Championship. He then asks Linh if she can go to Foxfire. Linh mentions flooding Ravagog, and Jensi comments, "Whoa, that was you?"

Quotes

“The water doesn't get to command me anymore. Only I command it. And I think I can save the city.”

—Linh Song, in Book 6: Nightfall

“This is fun--I never get to see Tam blush!”

—Linh Song, in Book 7: Flashback

“Actions never tell the whole story. Good can be done for the wrong reasons and bad can be misunderstood.”

—Linh Song, in Book 5: Lodestar

Trivia

Character Bio by Shannon Messenger

Linh may be the soft-spoken, easily blushing counterpart to her twin brother’s surly moods—but that doesn’t make her any less of a force to be reckoned with. In fact, she’s one of the most powerful characters in the series—which sometimes causes problems for her. But she’s moved beyond her days of being the Girl of Many Floods and is ready and willing to prove her incredible control whenever the need arises, whether it be with awe-inspiring tricks or life-saving rescues.[5]
