Tiergan utilizes Indurite in order to transform into Granite, his Black Swan alter-ego. As mentioned in Book 4: Neverseen, he consumed this chalky powder when needing to switch identities. It caused his body to crystallize and harden, making him look like a talking statue, which is one reason why he is called Granite. Another reason for this name is that Granite is an anagram of the name Tiergan.
