Edaline Kelia Ruewen (pronounced Ed-uh-leen Kee-lee-uh Ru-when) is the adoptive mother of Sophie Foster and wife of Grady Ruewen. She lives at Havenfield with Sophie and Grady.

Edaline was formerly part of the Nobility. She was working on an important classified project-Sophie later found out that it had something to do with monitoring the Mermaid migration— when her only biological daughter Jolie Ruewen died in an Everblaze fire created by her fiancé, Brant, a member of the organization Neverseen. She then pulled away and has not returned since. Edaline has social anxiety because of Jolie's death.

She is a Conjurer and rehabilitates animals with her husband.

Edaline and Grady were once socialites, throwing massive parties, and being even more famous than the Vackers, but they began secluding themselves after Jolie's death, ultimately causing them to be talked about constantly and used as a 'cautionary tale'.

Appearance[]

Edaline was described as having rosy cheeks, turquoise eyes, and amber wavy hair that fell past her waist. Sophie thinks that she is probably the most beautiful woman she's ever seen excluding Della Adara Vacker. She's often described to have bags under her eyes, caused by the death of Jolie, her grief, her stress, and her worry. She appears similar to her sister, Juline Dizznee, so much so that Dex grew tearful when he saw Edaline after being separated from his own mother.

Personality[]

Edaline is described to look like a delicate, grief-stricken flower, but she can wrangle a Tyrannosaurus Rex with ease. Apart from that, Edaline is very dedicated to her loved ones, and cares about them a lot. Before Jolie died, she and her husband Grady were very outgoing. Since then, they have secluded themselves in their house, alone until Sophie came. At first, Edaline struggled with getting used to Sophie, going as far as canceling her adoption. However, she soon realized how much she meant to her and accepted Sophie as her daughter.

Edaline is genuinely a kind person who cares about other people, even though she may still be gaining her socializing skills back.

Book 1: Keeper of the Lost Cities[]

Edaline is still mourning Jolie’s death and seems to be very fragile. At the end, she and Grady adopt Sophie.

Book 2: Exile[]

Edaline and Grady take Sophie with them when they visit Wanderling Woods and Brant. They also decide to let Sophie fix her abilities.

Book 3: Everblaze[]

Edaline lets Sophie clean out Jolie’s old room. She also seems to be happy that Sophie is making more girl friends.

Book 4: Neverseen[]

Edaline helps Sophie hide Kenric’s cache in the void. She and Grady allow Calla to have her tree at Havenfield.

Book 5: Lodestar[]

Edaline “saves” Sophie from Sandor And Grady’s “boy talk.” She also joins Sophie at the Peace Summit. Sophie enhances Edaline's conjuring powers, which they use to escape the disaster at Lumenaria.

Book 6: Nightfall[]

Edaline and Sophie look through Sophie’s old scrapbook. Edaline admits that sometimes she forgets Sophie had a whole life before she came to live with them.

Book 7: Flashback[]

Edaline stays by Sophie’s side for most of her bed rest. She and Grady also joined her when she tried to find Lady Gisela at the The Celestial Festival.

Book 8: Legacy[]

Edaline comforts Sophie after Sophie tells her that she is unmatchable. She also tells Sophie that she has been invited to be a Regent in the Nobility.

Book 9: Stellarlune[]

Edaline helps Sophie with relationship struggles and tells her that she should allow her personal life to matter. She is working to rehabilitate Gremlins, which are her least favorite animal to rehabilitate.

Relationships[]

Grady Ruewen[]

Grady is Edaline's husband. She was #7 on his match list, and he was #3 of hers. They comfort and support each other a lot after Jolie died. When Grady loses his temper, she is the first to calm him. When Edaline gets upset at fires, Jolie, or just worried, Grady will comfort her. Edaline also hates it when Grady mesmerizes her. He also has an affectionate nickname (“Eda”) for her that he used especially in the first book.

Sophie Foster[]

  • adoptive daughter

Sophie Foster lives with Edaline and Grady after living with humans. At first, they cancelled her adoption, but later they reinstate it. They showed how much they cared for Sophie when she nearly faded when she was shown as a gaunt figure. Edaline and Grady love Sophie and support her decisions regarding the Black Swan. When Sophie and her "gang" went to join the Black Swan, Edaline and Grady let her go rather than stopping her. She refrained from saying goodbye, fearing that she wouldn't be able to handle it. She later went to Alluveterre to teach Sophie to hide Kenric's Cache in the Void. When Sophie is sulking in bed (which she does a lot), Edaline will rub Sophie's back and stay in bed with her. Also, when a boy is around, unlike Grady, she raises her eyebrows and gives a lot of ¨sappy smiles¨ and knowing looks.

Jolie Ruewen[]

  • biological daughter (deceased)

Jolie is Edaline's daughter who was murdered in a fire. Every year, Grady and Edaline put a new charm on Jolie's charm bracelet when they visit her grave. Edaline used to sleep in Jolie's room after her death, a habit that Grady and she have worked to stop. She mourned for over a decade and was extremely sensitive about fires and burns. When Sophie came along, Sophie reminded Edaline of Jolie so much that she was very timid for a while.

Brant[]

  • Former future son-in-law (deceased)

Brant was Jolie's fiancé. Every year on the day that Jolie died, Grady and Edaline go to visit Brant in his fireproof house after visiting Jolie's grave. Brant used Edaline and Grady and is actually the Pyrokinetic who killed Jolie. Brant is part of the Neverseen. As of Lodestar, Brant is dead because Mr. Forkle killed him with falling rubble during the battle at Lumenaria.

The Dizznee Family[]

  • Sister's family

Edaline is Juline Dizznee's (Dex's mother) sister. They both look extremely alike, but seem to not be very close after the death of Jolie because Grady and Edaline isolated themselves after her death. In Lodestar, Edaline found out that Juline is Squall, who was part of the Black Swan, and was shocked.

The Vacker Family[]

  • Friends

Edaline and Grady are close to the Vacker family. It was Alden Vacker that first introduced Sophie into their lives. Della and Edaline are also implied to be friends, as fellow mothers and by helping each other through hard times. Edaline also appears to be fine with the so-called "Fitzphie" by peeking on their moments and saying that Fitz is smitten with Sophie.

Quotes[]

“Losing you was one of the hardest things I've ever endured. But the worst part was knowing that you had no idea how much you mean to us.”

—Edaline Ruewen, in Keeper of the Lost Cities

“We wanted her to see that the shadows that scared her could be beautiful and powerful once when we learn how to take control of them.”

—Edaline Ruewen, in Book 6: Nightfall
