Custard Bursts are square puffs that look like marshmallows but are hard like candy on the outside with goo on the inside. They come in different flavors including chocolate mint, chocolate-cherry, butterscotch, lushberry, and caramel.

They used to be Jolie's favorite dessert. In the first books, Sophie didn't know what custard burst were, and Edaline didn't want to bake them for her as it reminded her too much of Jolie. When Sophie met Brant in Everblaze she learned why Edaline had kept the home recipe away. After Sophie learned about custard bursts from Brant, Edaline decided to start making them for Sophie. Edaline now loves making custard bursts for Sophie and her friends, they are now one of Sophie's favorite desserts besides mallowmelt. According to Shannon Messenger, they are based on French macarons.

Fitz makes caramel custard bursts for Sophie in Nightfall, and she notes them to be "more lopsided than the batches Edaline made–but somehow that made the gesture even sweeter."
