"Keefe's Memories" is a section of Book 8.5: Unlocked with one of Keefe's memories from each book in the series. These are all in his brown, gold, green, and silver journals, where he documents his memories "to see if it helps him remember anything his mom erased."[1] There is a drawing of each memory along with his commentary on it.
Memory #1: The Meeting (Keeper of the Lost Cities)[]
- Lord Cassius is described to have a condescending expression on his face.
- Symbol: Cassius's hair is symbolic of how he expects everyone and everything around him to be perfect and tidy. Keefe notes that it takes him approximately thirty-one minutes for him to smooth out his hair.
- His dad was being very snooty, and Keefe is unsure who his dad was trying to show off to in this memory.
- It could be Sir Tiergan for another connection to an elf with a good reputation.
- It also could have been Sophie Foster, as he would talk to his wife about how powerful she was. (It was later noted that Lady Gisela would always be the one to bring up those conversations.)
- Keefe notes that he depicted himself as miserable right before the moment drawn mostly because he was nervous and very aware that Lord Cassius knew that Sophie was hiding something from him (due to his empathy).
- He notes that he felt Sophie's mood shift to sadness for him, and the moment he drew was him noticing this.
- The section ends with Keefe being thankful that Sophie didn't pity him after finding out about his family issues.
- He also hints that he likes Sophie.
Memory #2: The Flight (Exile)[]
- Keefe notes that Silveny's back was not very comfortable to sit on.
- He says that Foster was feeling the pressure and freaking out from meeting her creators from Project Moonlark.
- He also notes that there was the added worry of ability-fixing at this point.
- Keefe mentions that the only reason why he went on the trip was because Sophie's parents did not want her going to the Black Swan alone.
- During the ride, he said that all he did was make jokes as a distraction and make her blush.
- Keefe confesses that the reason he decided to draw this memory was because of the way Sophie blushes when he tells her jokes.
- The blush is described as warm, and it gave him a feeling that he had maybe he had a shot at getting Sophie to like him.
Memory #3: The Leap (Everblaze)[]
- This memory was of the day when they took five light leaps, one for each of the unmapped stars. Keefe recalls that leaping with quintessence is worse than with regular light because it can take one to many places that regular light cannot reach.
- The order they went in was Lucilliant, Candesia, Marquiseire, Phosforien, and Elementine. The pink glow in the picture is from the Marquiseire leap. Keefe describes this as the worst leap out of the five.
- Keefe recalls that the Black Swan's plan to use him and Sophie as bait for the Neverseen worked, as Lady Gisela had hidden a tracker in Keefe's Sencen family crest pin.
- Keefe explains that he chose to draw this memory because the feeling he got when Lady Gisela triggered his second manifestation was similar to the feeling he got when leaping with Marquiseire in Everblaze. He says that he hopes to use this as a clue to find out what is going on with his abilities.
Memory #4: The Betrayal (Neverseen)[]
- Keefe explains that he joined the Neverseen because he thought that they weren't getting anywhere and that he thought he could take them down from the inside.
- Keefe also admits that he didn't know if Sophie would forgive him. He says that he still worries that part of her doesn't trust him. He also says that he forces himself to remember Sophie's expression each time he is with Fitz and Sophie.
Memory #5: The Disaster (Lodestar)[]
- Keefe recounts his perspective of what happened when Lumenaria fell.
- He admits he was terrified to see Lumenaria fall despite going through a lot of scary things
- As he watched, he said, all he could think about was that Sophie was in there. He remembers asking people whether they'd seen her, and one person said that they saw her run into the castle just before it fell.
- When he found her and Edaline and confirmed that they were alive, he says that he cried afterward. But just before he woke her, he tried to calm down.
- Even though he makes jokes about Sophie's "near-death experiences", he thinks there is nothing funny about them.
- The memory ends with Keefe admitting that he thinks all of it was his fault.
Memory #6: The Twin (Nightfall)[]
- Keefe comments on how he got "artsy" with the design of this memory. Specifically, he wanted to remember the moonlarks' songs, and how much they summed up what happened that day.
- Keefe recounts how each of them reacted, and says that he didn't know what to think when he found out.
- Keefe admits that even if Mr. Forkle hadn't told him to take care of Sophie, he would have done it anyway.
- The memory ends with Keefe saying that he is sick of losing in general.
Memory #7: The Tribunal (Flashback)[]
- "Ugh" is Keefe's first comment on this memory
- Keefe remembers that the only reason he was there was because Alden wanted him to be there to help support Fitz and Sophie, though the only reason he agreed to do so was for Sophie.
- He also remembers that though Alvar was lying, he also knew that Alvar was genuine because of his ability as an Empath, and the fact that Alvar was genuine because of his lack of memories.
- The memory ends with Keefe saying that people can switch sides at any time, and that might be what his mom is counting on.
Memory #8: The Thing (Legacy)[]
- Keefe comments that it looks like Lady Gisela is cheering on a team in a game, and it almost looks like she's chanting "legacy".
- He admits that Tam tried to keep this from happening, and he didn't listen.
- He also admits that he was happy to have Sophie there.
- The memory ends with Keefe saying that the memory-draw-and-comment experiment isn't working.
