Well, beside 'why not?', there is a HUGE connection, because Harry Potter is the parent of all the magic-child fantasy serieses of the last two decades. This includes Persi Jeckson (and his friends), Eragon, and Sophie Foster. They all owe their existence to J.K. Rowling.

LOTR came before HP, and there were other fantasy serieses. But HP is the first to put a child as it's main character, and make him powerful.

wut about chronicles of narnia? the children are powerful there.
I hadn't really read Narnia, just a bit of it, I think it's different, but it's only an opionion. It's even not my own theory but I think it's true.
And like LOTR it has no single main character (though The Hobbit has one)
Hup. CS Lewis and JJR Tolkien were best friends.
